Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Joint Task Force Six (JTF-6) Operation AT-93 involved multiple actions in six south Texas counties. These actions included the repair and construction of approximately 240 km (150 mi) of existing firebreaks, the repair/upgrade of approximately 9.5 km (5.9 mi) of road along the Rio Grande River near Laredo, the upgrade of two small-arms firing ranges, and the construction of a fitness/obstacle course. Extensive previous disturbance was noted within the impact areas of the firebreaks and at the two firing ranges; no cultural resource sites were located in these areas. Along the Rio Grande, the survey identified the site of Star …

Remembering Santa Fe Indian School, 1890-1990, Sally Hyer
American Studies ETDs
This dissertation is an ethnohistorical study of Santa Fe Indian School in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a boarding school for children from southwestern tribes in grades seven through twelve. SFIS was founded by the federal government in 1890 as a highly regimented, hierarchical institution designed to assimilate Indian students through education and isolation from their families. In 1976 control of Albuquerque Indian School shifted to the All Indian Pueblo Council, an ancient inter-pueblo coalition. The AIS program was transferred to Santa Fe in 1981. Under tribal control, first by AIPC and now by a Board of Education, SFIS has been …

Data Recovery At Lake Alan Henry (Justiceburg Reservior), Garza And Kent Counties, Texas: Phase Iii, Season 3, Douglas K. Boyd, Jay Peck, Steve A. Tomka, Karl W. Kibler, Martha Doty Freeman
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The third and final season of Phase III data recovery at Lake Alan Henry (formerly Justiceburg Reservoir), located on the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River in Garza and Kent counties, Texas, was conducted during the fall of 1992. The work consisted of intensive archeological investigations at one historic site and four prehistoric sites. Subsequent to the Season 3 data recovery fieldwork, a newly discovered rock art site (41KTl64) was documented. The historic component at 41GR474 consists of a dugout depression and the ruins of a wood frame house and related complex of ranching structures. It was the homestead …

A Literary Evaluation Of Black Female Interaction In Toni Morrison's "Beloved", "Sula," "Jazz", Carol Ann Davenport
A Literary Evaluation Of Black Female Interaction In Toni Morrison's "Beloved", "Sula," "Jazz", Carol Ann Davenport
English Theses & Dissertations
This Master's thesis consists of three chapters that examine the roles, circumstances and effects of racism and sexism on the black female characters in three of Toni Morrison's novels, Beloved, Sula and Jazz. I propose that the elements of racism and sexism have left the female characters, Sethe, Denver, Ella, etc. in Beloved with few choices in life. Further, I suggest that the theme of "choice versus no choice" perpetuates hatred and self-hatred among black women and results in "metaphoric scarring." I explore in the characters, Sula, Eva, Hannah, Nel, and the black Bottom women, the damage inflicted on black …

An Historical Look At The Negro Baseball Leagues: The Legend Of The Black Knights, Terry Pierce
McCabe Thesis Collection
This study hopes to fill in some of the gaps in the history of the Negro Leagues. More importantly though, this research is successful only if the readers can come away with a true sense of what the ballplayers of the era felt and why they played while enduring racism and humiliation.
This study was conducted to pull together the previously written facts and history of the Negro Leagues with obscure oral history and data found through interviews, videotapes, articles, and books from and about those who played and lived during the era.

Women Without Men: Hemingway's Female Characters, Kelly Brillhart
Women Without Men: Hemingway's Female Characters, Kelly Brillhart
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Ernest Hemingway wrote four major novels and dozens of short stories during his long career as one of America's preeminent twentieth century writers. Both during his lifetime and after his death, critics have written extensively about his work, analyzing it, interpreting it, and evaluating it. Perhaps the most debated aspect of the canon is Hemingway's treatment of female characters. In the past, critics tended to arrange Hemingway's heroines into categories, frequently dividing them into two groups: the bitches and the goddesses. More recent criticism eschews the restrictions of categories, focusing on the women as individuals and attempting to explain their …
