The Conscience Of Little Women: Beth's Epic, Mcewen Baker
The Conscience Of Little Women: Beth's Epic, Mcewen Baker
Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
From its conception, and through countless retellings, there is no doubt that Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women is an American classic that has stood the test of time. Kate Hamill’s stage adaptation affirms and extends this legacy; the playwright adopts a contemporary feminist approach that defies gender norms and exclusivity in casting and encourages an actor-centered approach. This essay explains the importance of this adaptation and its influence on my portrayal of Beth March in Belmont University’s Fall 2021 production. It touches on the often overlooked significance of the second youngest sister as well as how my personal battle with …

Theatre and Dance Faculty Publications
Objective:
To evaluate the relationship between training in theatre improvisation and empathy, communication, and other professional skills.
Methods:
Undergraduate and graduate students who were participants of a 10-week summer undergraduate research program engaged in theatre improvisation techniques during a 3-hour workshop. In Study #1, a de-identified, self-report questionnaire (known as the Empathy Quotient) was administered prior to and following the workshop. Paired sample 2-tailed t-tests were performed to evaluate pre- and post-test scores. To identify additional benefits of engaging in theatre improvisation techniques, Study #2 was performed. Here, a survey was administered to the participants following their completion of …

La Méthode De L'Actors Studio : Genèse, Pratique Et Phénoménologie, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau
Presidential Fellows Articles and Research

Providing Useful Feedback, Carol Damgen, Carol L. Damgen
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
This reflection is based on an educational assignment from my Oral Interpretation of Literature course at California State University, San Bernardino, April 2019.
Assessment is an essential part of education. However, assessment shouldn’t necessarily come from only one source-the teacher. I believe students benefit from receiving feedback from not only their instructor, but from their peers and lastly from themselves. This layered reflection allows one to learn from what others feel about their work. It is essential to have a second eye if we are to grow as learners.
This multi-perspective view allows the student to offer critical analysis to …

Planning An Effective Class Session, Carol Damgen, Carol L. Damgen
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
This reflection is based on an educational assignment from my Intro to Theatre course at California State University, San Bernardino, April 2019.
As an educator, I am always interested in combining new techniques with tried and true approaches. My hope is twofold- enhance my students learning and keep me inspired.
The concept of a beginning, middle and end in all classes, provides structure for your students and keeps the pedagogy focused.
I incorporated the “I do, we do, you do” approach to support a well-balanced framework for the class period. This technique is a creative take on a beginning, middle …

Developing And Using Grading Guides, Checklists, And Rubrics, Carol Damgen, Carol L. Damgen
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
This reflection is based on an educational assignment from my Intro to Theatre Arts course at California State University, San Bernardino, May 2019.
Providing students guidance when taking on a new assignment is essential. This direction may be achieved through a variety of sources: lectures, videos, examples of past students work, rubrics etc.
One approach, which may benefit the learner in the immediate and have a lasting impression, is teaching students to use the grading tool at hand (rubric/checklist) to improve assignments.
Following an example you have provided, the instructor will work with their students to use either a checklist …

Aligning Assessments With Course Outcomes, Carol Damgen, Carol L. Damgen
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
This reflection is based on an educational assignment from my Oral Interpretation of Literature course at California State University, San Bernardino, May 2019.
A consistent focus and goal for me as an educator is to align assessments with course outcomes.
The learning outcome for this class session focused on the cognitive approach- “students will develop the skills to communicate an oral interpretation of literature to an audience with believability, dramatic action and honesty.”
The intention of this class period was for my students to clearly understand the difference between acting, reading and oral interpretation. Oral Interpretation is a type of …
Musical Ability And Accent Imitation, Maria Murljacic
Musical Ability And Accent Imitation, Maria Murljacic
Honors Scholar Theses
This study investigates the intersection of musical ability and accent imitation, more specifically defining what factors cause a relationship between the two. The study was run on 50 participants, who each completed an accent imitation ability assessment, a musical ability assessment, and an articulation ability assessment. The scores for the accent imitation portion were rated by anonymous online raters. Each participant filled out a questionnaire on prior musical experience and were either classified as a musician or non-musician. The analysis found that those in the musician group performed better on the musical ability, articulation, and accent ability assessment than non-musicians. …

Putting It Together: Musical Theatre As An Academic Discipline, Madison Finney
Honors College Theses
Musical Theatre is an art form that integrates singing, acting, dancing, and production for the purposes of storytelling. It is an artistic field that is extremely interdisciplinary, and it draws upon many different areas of knowledge for performance and education. Additionally, Musical Theatre has evolved into a viable academic field of study. It incorporates artistry and academic analysis as a way to enhance performance and higher education. This paper will use Practice as Research theory, creativity theory, and disciplinary discourse theory to explore the ways Musical Theatre successfully functions as an art form and an academic discipline.

LimboLand: A One-Act Play about Death, for kids
Megan Huggins
Thesis Director: James Al-Shamma, Ph.D
Thesis Committee: Shawn Knight, Jessica Mueller
A loose adaptation of Dante Alighieri’s epic poem Inferno, LimboLand uses Alighieri’s model of the nine circles of Hell to illustrate the five stages of grief. In a script designed for theatre for young audiences, Dante, a young child, travels through different rooms as he attempts to cope with and understand his sister’s death. Dante follows Virgil, an older child, who knows a lot about the afterlife system without understanding any of it. The play includes an appendix …
Aesthetics Of Oya In Reading, Casting, And Staging Lillian Hellman’S The Children’S Hour, Artisia Green
Aesthetics Of Oya In Reading, Casting, And Staging Lillian Hellman’S The Children’S Hour, Artisia Green
Arts & Sciences Articles
In the eighteen years between the play’s opening at the Maxine Elliot Theatre and 1952, Lillian Hellman’s 1934 version of The Children’s Hour undergoes a dramaturgical evolution. As Hellman evolved as a playwright and queer woman, she revisits the play several times, altering character attributes and modifying content. In Pentimento: A Book of Portraits (1973), Hellman describes this process of revision as pentimento writing, “later choice[s], [are] a way of seeing and then seeing again” (309). Hellman’s amendments were the inspiration for the conceptual approach used in the 2018 William & Mary Theatre production of The Children’s Hour—a framework …

L’Ètica De L’Estètica ¿Caldria Debatre L’Antijudaisme Del ‘Misteri D’Elx’?, Antoni Pizà
Publications and Research
Healing Through Creativity And Creation: Drama Therapy As Treatment For Individuals With Eating Disorders, Hayley Werner
Healing Through Creativity And Creation: Drama Therapy As Treatment For Individuals With Eating Disorders, Hayley Werner
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
For those living with eating disorders, intervention and effective treatment can mean the difference between life and death. Conventional treatments, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, forms of talk therapy, and Nutritional Counseling, focus solely on the psychological patterns or nutritional science of eating disorders. Though these treatments are effective for some individuals, there is a gap in treatment options that address both the mind and body as one and appeal to the humanity of patients outside of their disorder(s). Herein lies the power and potential of integrating drama therapy as a widely available treatment. Drama therapy …

Acting Is Reacting; Acting Is Coping?, Oceana Marie Dunsire
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
This paper seeks to explore how learning acting techniques might help to improve one’s relationship with their own mental health. Students are a vulnerable population when it comes to anxiety and depression, and acquiring the skills to recognize and cope with such disabilities could go a long way toward ensuring their health and success throughout higher education and beyond. The topic is explored through compiling and comparing various essays and books which cover esteemed psychiatric and acting techniques, in addition to personal reflection from the author, a graduate of Western Washington University’s acting program.
