The Case For Student Appropriation Of University-Proximate Land Value, Robyn Curts Dec 2016

The Case For Student Appropriation Of University-Proximate Land Value, Robyn Curts

Planning Theses

This thesis proposes an eclectic pairing of Henry George’s value capture theory and Marxist spatial theory as a possible space-based solution to the student debt crisis. The literature review section includes background on neoliberalism in public universities; student spending and debt; current policy proposals for alleviation of the debt crisis; and selected analysis of Georgist and Marxist theories, including the work of Henry George, Henri Lefebvre, and David Harvey. The paper includes a case study of the University of Texas at Austin that illustrates potential policy considerations and funds garnered by student appropriation of unearned increases in land value proximate …

Policy Recommendation For Integrating Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems With Aviation Facilities In North Central Texas, Mike Branum Dec 2016

Policy Recommendation For Integrating Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems With Aviation Facilities In North Central Texas, Mike Branum

Planning Theses

Prevalent availability and use of small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) have placed this technology at the forefront of federal, state, and local policy discussions. With the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) August 2016 release of regulatory conditions for civilian and commercial uses of unmanned aircraft, states and local governments are seeking to enact their own regulations to protect citizens, vital infrastructure, and economic assets including airports. This study analyzed results of aviation stakeholder and public safety professional responses to a survey, administered by the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG), to identify municipal concerns about the integration of sUAS with …

Social Sustenance: Nurturing Change, Daniel Aguilera

2016 Fall Inclusion and Neighborhood Resilience with IISTL

The site’s direct connection to S. Grand Blvd. and the existing building are the fabric on which program, design and intent were concentrated. The building presented for adaptive reuse was originally the South Buick Auto Center, a structure capable of vehicle occupation on each floor, including the roof. The elevated rate of youth crime and the lack of activity space in the community brought about an idea for an alternative to re-incarceration, low employment rates and low educational and economic mobility for those individuals convicted of crimes between the ages of 17-25. Social Sustenance proposes a food truck incubator catered …

Belo Horizonte, Portal To The Future: A Vision For Brazil, Daniel J. Brassil, Ardeshir Anjomani

Planning Masters Professional Reports

A massive improvement of Belo Horizonte's transportation infrastructure would not only improve the quality of life of the residents of this important metropolitan area, it would positively change the course of Brazil and Iberian America's future by creating a new economic engine, enabling business and enterprise while providing opportunities and prosperity to millions. Belo Horizonte - much like the Dallas - Fort Worth metropolitan area in the Unites States and the Madrid metropolitan area in Spain - have many similarities. All three metropolitan areas are major, inland centers without navigable waterways and with populations of over 5 million inhabitants. Using …

Prediction Of The Root Anchorage Of Native Young Plants Using Bayesian Inference, Ryan Wai Man Yan, Lin Zhang, Flora T. Y. Leung, Ka-Veng Yuen Jan 2016

Prediction Of The Root Anchorage Of Native Young Plants Using Bayesian Inference, Ryan Wai Man Yan, Lin Zhang, Flora T. Y. Leung, Ka-Veng Yuen

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

The maximum vertical uproot resistance (Pmax) of a plant can be used to indicate its stability. Attempts were made to predict the Pmax of a plant empirically from some of its size parameters. In practice, an infinite number of empirical models with different complexities can be formulated. This study presents a Bayesian model class selection method to evaluate the plausibility of each empirical model among a list of model candidates. The models were ranked to identify the most plausible one. A database of vertical uproot resistance of four shrubs and trees native to Hong Kong was first compiled by performing …
