Delivering Design Fundamentals Using Relevant Learning Theories In The Delivery Of An Interior Design Project At Third Level, Tracey Dalton

Articles

This is a reflection on teaching practice, focussing on design process in a BA Honours in Design – Interior and Furniture, in Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). An intrinsic case study approach (Stake 1995) was taken for this research, which focussed on the use of the learning theories in the delivery of an undergraduate interior design project brief. A third year commercial office design project has been used to assess teaching and learning styles. This article will show that, in terms of delivery, in a typical third level interior design project in DIT, the process incorporates all of the learning …

Philosophy Statement

In the creative side of the world, it is fairly common for one to be “innovatively altered” and “unusual” if a designer or an artist. As designers, we are imaginative individuals that recognize a level of emotion beyond the structure needed to design for function and safety. The strong connection to emotion is what compel us through our design process. Designers are alike for which we do not design for ourselves; we create for others. Some designers and artists may be “unusual” and “strangely different” but it is not a flaw. This is part of the individual nature …

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

I believe that every interior should embrace a simple, sophisticated, and refreshing environment. Everything I create should meet the clients style and personal needs. By designing an atmosphere that reflects an individuals personality and enhances the functionality of the space, the user is left with a fun and organized environment that is truly their own unique home.

Design Philosophy

My, design philosophy is based on the belief that every space should reflect the needs and personality of those in it. A well-designed space should embody a timeless, functional design while having a unique interior that is comfortable, livable, and nurturing. Every space should include natural elements to express the nurturing qualities of the earth and should increase the mental and physical wellness of those occupying it. It is not enough to have a luxurious space; instead a well-designed interior must give the user a sense of comfort and livability along with being aesthetically beautiful. It is of …

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Design is creating a space that is sustainable, serviceable, and stylish. Design reflects where clients have been and what inspires them. There are countless styles from which people may choose to reflect who they are. The designs must be innovative and efficient throughout the design process to manage client requests with good design practice. The result is a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing and functional but good for their health, and for the environment.

Interior design is more than meets the eye; It has the power to change the world if done properly. That is why sustainability is such an important aspect to incorporate as much as possible.

My design philosophy is grounded in the idea that the final product should support a safe and healthy environment for whoever inhabits the space. Having a balance of functionality, comfort, and luxury is something I also strive for in all my designs.

Three factors inspire my design choices; The natural beauty of our world, the clients style, and the purpose for the space. These three factors …

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

"Interior Design is not always what we see on TV. The beauty of this career is much more than aesthetics like people think. Design is all about the process behind the results. Great design considers the function and human use. The future and sustainability should always be considered in design because the goal is to create spaces that can be used for years and years to come. To become a great designer, one must consider the wants of the client before the wants of oneself. As a designer, the goal is to design spaces that are livable and …

Design Philosophy

As an interior designer my main focus is to design an environment that will enhance the quality of life and culture of the occupants and still be aesthetically pleasing. A design philosophy varies from designer to designer but our end goal is all the same; we care about the health, safety, and welfare of the occupants that will inhabit the space as well as the beauty of the space. I am hoping to pursue hospitality design so my personal design philosophy is to create a beautiful yet function environment that has the comfort of home combined with a …

Design Philosophy

I value design as a tool to create spaces that help my client live more comfortable lives. First, I believe that to create a better tomorrow we need to construct sustainably today to preserve our remaining resources. Secondly, I believe that spaces should be designed universally so that they support the client throughout the lifespan. Lastly, I believe that both sustainable and universally designed spaces should reflect imagination and beauty; everyone is entitled to good design.

Design Philosophy

IN THE WISE WORDS OF ROBIN SIEGERMAN, “DESIGN IS ABOUT MAKING PEOPLE HAPPY, EITHER FUNCTIONALLY, AESTHETICALLY OR EMOTIONALLY.” OUR PERSONAL SPACE CAN REFLECT WHAT WE FEEL ON THE INSIDE BUT ALSO WHO WE ARE AS PEOPLE. MY DESIGN PHILOSOPHY IS TO CREATE AN AURA FROM WHICH NO INDIVIDUAL EVER WANTS TO ESCAPE. I WILL ACCOMPLISH THIS THROUGH SMART AND SIMPLE PLACEMENT OF SPACES, COLORS AND TEXTURES. I WANT EACH SPACE, HOME, AND OFFICE TO HAVE ITS OWN LIFE THAT EMBRACES THE HUMAN WHO OCCUPIES IT. MY DESIGNS WILL BE SIMPLE BUT SIGNIFICANT AND HARMONIZE THE MOOD WITH THE …

MY DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Midway through my college career, I began working as an assistant to an Independent Living Specialist. He is very active in assisting disabled individuals find and receive the resources they need to live independently. He had me drawing floor plans to show his disabled clients how to follow the concept of "Aging in Place." The concept basically means that a home should function for the length of a life, childhood to old age. By incorporating simple elements such as 3-foot doors, walls enforced for handrails, and at least one entrance without a step you can eliminate some …

Design Philosophy

I believe that design should provide creative solutions to suit the needs of others. Designers should observe and understand the problems and approach it in a creative perspective. Not only should it be designed for present, but also the future. By thinking long term, I believe that a designer is preparing for what can happen. A well thought out design should be timeless yet be unique, functional and comfortable. I also believe that simplicity is key to design. Adding a lot of elements can overpower the main focus of the design. Designers should not only collaborate with other, …

Pattern Research Project: An Investigation Of The Pattern And Printing Process - Asanoha, Alyssa Chin

Pattern Research Project

2017 Pattern Research Project

Alyssa Chin - Asanoha

The Pattern Research Project involves research and analysis of contemporary patterns found in the textiles and wallcoverings of the built interior environment. Patterns use motif, repetition, color, geometry, craft, technology, and space to communicate place, time, and concept. Through this research and analysis, built environments - their designers, occupants, construction, and context - can be better understood.

Alyssa Chin, VCU Interior Design BFA 2020, selected the Asanoha pattern for the 2017 Pattern Research Project. The text below is excerpted from the student’s work:

“Asanoha is a traditional pattern of Japan and its …

Increasing Retention Rates For South Hall Residency, Cody Johnson, Catherine Rivette Jan 2017

Increasing Retention Rates For South Hall Residency, Cody Johnson, Catherine Rivette

School of Human Sciences Research Showcase

Stephen F. Austin State University's Residence Life Department aims to improve resident retention in South Hall through renovation and interior design. By improving the spaces meant for student use, we hope to increase the involvement and comfort of the residents. The existing structure was not designed for today's amenities and accessibility standards. By enlarging doorways, adding an elevator, and de-compartmentalizing the community spaces, the building becomes much more accessible to people with disabilities. These open spaces also fit into the contemporary styles of living and promote interaction between the residents and other occupants.

Immersive Theater & The Physical Narrative, Lauren Prisco Jan 2017

Immersive Theater & The Physical Narrative, Lauren Prisco

Theses and Dissertations

Immersive Theater is a form of experimental theater that places spectators at the heart of the created work, by removing them from the constraint of static seats and instead encouraging them to explore an installed environment as a way of understanding the narrative. This thesis explores how Interior Design directly enhances a performance by creating spaces that challenge a spectator’s physical understanding of a narrative.
