Integrative Sonic Urbanism: Artist-Led Strategies For Urban Sound Design In The Contemporary City, Sven Anderson
Integrative Sonic Urbanism: Artist-Led Strategies For Urban Sound Design In The Contemporary City, Sven Anderson
Doctoral
This doctoral research advances the fields of urban sound design and acoustic planning, presenting new ways of exploring the interrelationship between individual and collective sonic experience, the dynamic potential of the urban sound environment and the complex evolution of the contemporary cityscape. It links urban sound art practices with larger urban design processes, revealing how sound contributes to the production of urban space. The research progresses by crafting a dynamic, integrative methodology that activates contrasting sonic perspectives to critically reassess the role of sound in the public realm. As it discloses this methodology, the research navigates the tension between new …

The Joondalup Story : A City And A University Campus In The Making, John Renner, Sybe Jongeling
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
'The Joondalup Story' is a record of creative planning and urban development of the City of Joondalup and within it Edith Cowan University's northern campus at Joondalup. It's a remarkable story of urban planning initiated by Professor Gordon Stephenson and the evolution of a planned urban community in its first decade, 1987 to 1996. Finally, in the last two chapters, 'Joondalup Story' profiles the challenges and impressive achievements of the Joondalup community, city and campus, two decades later in 2015.

Unreal Urbanisms, Temitope Olujobi
Architecture Thesis Prep
As virtual cities are made in the transnational image of physical cities the same claims about legibility, public image and the five elements of a city’s can be asserted to virtual environment, however; the bottom up approach to building these virtual cities means the appearance, use and interplay of these elements will operate differently. The research of the virtual cities featured on Unreal Urbanisms will be executed in methods similar to the experiments conducted by Kevin Lynch. The first method will be field research in which we navigate the city and map out my own ways of movement and legibility …
The Impact Of Cargo Bikes On Travel Patterns: Survey Report Spring/ Summer 2014, William Riggs, Jana E. Schwartz, Crp 425 Bicycle And Pedestrian Planning
The Impact Of Cargo Bikes On Travel Patterns: Survey Report Spring/ Summer 2014, William Riggs, Jana E. Schwartz, Crp 425 Bicycle And Pedestrian Planning
City and Regional Planning Studios and Projects
Cargo bikes are becoming increasingly available in the United States with vendors such as Yuba, Trek, XtraCycle, and Marin all offering platforms. While a large body of research has continued to investigate traditional bike transportation, cargo bikes offer the potential to capture trips for those that might otherwise be made by car. To investigate this, a survey was conducted querying how use and travel characteristics changed upon cargo bike ownership (N = 299; 95% Confidence Interval +/-6%).
Creativity In Urban Placemaking: Horizontal Networks And Social Equity In Three Cultural Districts, Tom Borrup
Creativity In Urban Placemaking: Horizontal Networks And Social Equity In Three Cultural Districts, Tom Borrup
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
Many authors point to expanding disparities related to wealth and social benefits brought by globalization and the creative city movement while culture and creativity emerge as growing forces in urban placemaking and economic development. The phenomenon of cultural district formation in cities around the globe presents challenges and opportunities for leaders, planners, and managers. Emerging theory related to cultural districts suggests culture can serve to build horizontal relationships that bridge people and networks from different sectors and professions as well as across ethnicities, class, and interests. Research for this dissertation examined the formation of three urban cultural districts social and …
New Songdo City: A Case Study In Complexity Thinking And Ubiquitous Urban Design, Glen Kuecker
New Songdo City: A Case Study In Complexity Thinking And Ubiquitous Urban Design, Glen Kuecker
History Faculty publications
A new urban form has emerged amid the perfect storm of global crises: climate change, energy transition, demographic shifts (growth, aging, and urbanization), food and water insecurity, pandemics, economic stress, and ecological degradation. Known as “smart cities” or “ubiquitous cities,” this urban form is characterized by deployments of computer technologies and analytics that promise enhanced efficiencies within the urban metabolism. This paper presents South Korea’s New Songdo City as a case study in ubiquitous urban design by asking if it constitutes an opportunity within the perfect storm for an emergent, resilient urbanism. A key player in building New Songdo City …
Urban Form In Europe And America, Pietro S. Nivola
Urban Form In Europe And America, Pietro S. Nivola
Brookings Scholar Lecture Series
Why do America's cities sprawl whereas European cities remain comparatively compact, and what difference do the patterns of urban development make? Pietro Nivola, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, addresses these questions. Nivola examines two kinds of determinants of urban form: (1) market forces, including those influenced by geography, demographics, and technological change, and (2) public policies shaping national transportation systems, tax policy, educational institutions, and more. He also discusses the implications of the different cityscapes for energy consumption.

Dublin City Foresight: A Scenario Approach, Sinead Branagh
Masters
As we begin a new Millennium, a subtle and positive shift is occurring in all segments of society: an increased emphasis on the future – what it might look like, what challenges and opportunities it might present, and in what ways we might be able to respond most positively. It is emerging at a time of national reflection for organisations and individuals alike – and perhaps none too soon as changes in our social fabric, resource base, business and political environments, and perhaps most importantly, the pace and extent of changes in science and technology, launch us into exciting but …

The Potential For Planning An Industrial Cluster In Barre, Vermont: A Case Of 'Hard-Rock' Resistance In The Granite Industry, John R. Mullin, Zenia Kotval
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series
Throughout the world, there has been considerable interest among economic planners concerning the creation of industrial clusters. Efforts to stimulate, nurture and reinforce such clusters can be found in virtually all of the European nations, as well as in Japan, Korea, China and others. These efforts range from reinforcing the strengths of promising areas to stimulating the creation of totally new technologies. The identification of such clustering opportunities has become a critical element of national, state, regional and local planning activities. While there are many researchers who have focused on this topic, the Harvard Business School's Michael Porter has, arguably, been …

Ordering The Urban Environment: City Statutes And City Planning In Medieval Todi, Italy, Samuel Gruber, Samuel D. Gruber
Art & Music Histories - All Scholarship
Presents examples of how legal system and city government action ordered the urban environment through regulations and actions for streets size and widths, building materials, size and appearance, and distribution of activities. As demonstrated in the medieval Umbrian town of Todi, such regulations helped create the image of the medieval town we appreciate today.
Mature Industrial Communities: The Realities Of Reindustrialization, John R. Mullin, Jeanne H. Armstrong
Mature Industrial Communities: The Realities Of Reindustrialization, John R. Mullin, Jeanne H. Armstrong
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series
This article analyzes the reindustrialization problems facing mature-industry communities in Massachusetts. The findings are based upon our planning consulting work and research projects involving forty cities and towns. The range of these communities includes those which have recovered, are on their way to recovery, and are stable; those which are declining; and those whose status is indeterminate. A variety of factors are reviewed, including unionization; work-force characteristics; the relationship between small and large plants; the characteristics of local companies; location; financing; the availability of land; and the role of local planning. Finally, we present recommendations concerning local action and possible …
The Impact Of National Socialist Policies Upon Local City Planning In Pre-War Germany (1933-1939): The Rhetoric And The Reality, John Mullin
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series
This paper is a review and analysis of the influence of the national government upon local city planning during the pre-war years of National Socialism (1933-1939). The paper begins with a brief overview of the critical aspects of city planning during both the Wilhelmian years (1871-1918) and the Weimar era (1918-1932). These aspects are reviewed in the context of their contributions to the city planning profession in general and to the German experience in particular. The paper then reviews the influence of ideology on city planning activities and follows with an explanation of the "state of the city" at the …
American Perceptions Of German City Planning At The Turn Of The Century, John Mullin
American Perceptions Of German City Planning At The Turn Of The Century, John Mullin
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series
The German city in the late 1800's was a victim of many of the malaises that had struck earlier in the century in Britain and the United States. Rapid industrialization, improved transportation networks, and massive urbanization contributed to the creation of overcrowded, slum-like, disease-ridden cities throughout the nation. The long-admired medieval centers were increasingly prone to epidemics and destruction by fire. In a cultural-political sense, they were perceived by the ruling authorities as being corrupt, anti-volklich and centers of the much feared socialist movement. For the greater part of the century, the city had been neglected by both the national …
A Guideline For Master Plans In Cities In The Mexican Republic, Carlos Eduardo Inda Hernandez
A Guideline For Master Plans In Cities In The Mexican Republic, Carlos Eduardo Inda Hernandez
Architecture Master Theses
The purpose of my thesis is to study a guideline for Planning Agencies, using as their main tool the master plan and always with the idea that the planner and the political official would be working together. It will be useful to study the planning tools in the U.S., and the organization of planning in European countries and decide what could be used and what not, to study the variations to suit the Mexican scene and the different Mexican cities.
