The religious affiliations of citizens in the West are currently shifting away from the fundamentalist, traditional structures of the past towards more alternative spiritualities. Furthermore, as a result of the climate crisis, ecovillages are becoming increasingly popular. Ecovillages are intentional, “sustainable” communities that seek to reduce consumption, live in harmony with nature, and create strong social bonds. They are characterized by varying levels of spiritual involvement (Greenberg, 2014, p. 274). As such, the objective of this paper is to study the relationship between spirituality and environmentally-friendly practices and attitudes, using the ecovillage Ananda Valley – an Ananda Marga Master Unit …

Solar Panels, Marco Nuno Mourão
Solar Panels, Marco Nuno Mourão
Masters Theses
SOLAR PIXEL illustrates the intimate relationship between human and energy, attempts to advocate for questions against our unimaginative, unsustainable future, and ultimately question and locate our role behind the apertural exposure to solar energy.
One of the questions could be, how do we see energy manifest into our social structure. How are cities lit up, and what can we study from the pixels that we record using satellite images and data gathering and extrapolation. In this context, pixels on the screens are only apertures, which allows census organizations, government agencies, corporate research teams, or planners to estimate activities that are …

Landscapes Are Cornerstones Of Sustainability Programs, Don Spence
Landscapes Are Cornerstones Of Sustainability Programs, Don Spence
Sustainability Conference
Typical American landscapes are not sustainable in an economic or biological framework. The essence of the idea of sustainable growth and development are centered on the idea that those activities are not degrading natural resources or that they are outstrip budgets. A significant piece of any sustainable management plan is tied to how we manage our landscapes, how we use plants; specifically, how much grass there is, and how many native plants there are. Sustainable landscapes should require less chemical and financial inputs, which in the end, saves money and increases the biological value of the land and creates a …

Proposal For Adobe Earthbag Disaster-Relief Structure, John Camacho
Construction Management
The science behind creating an adobe house has been around for thousands of years; the primitive mixture contains only dirt, water, and straw. Left to cure in bricks or as a single cast-in-place system, the structure will provide long-lasting protection from the elements. Science has taken this a step further with the introduction of cementitious admixtures and reinforcement. The result is an adobe structure with exemplary thermo-retentive properties and load-bearing capabilities. This project provides an analysis on the “SuperAdobe” earthbag system that has been put into practice by independent contractors and housing-relief initiatives. The goal of the project was to …
