The 2022 COLLABORATE Design Studio brought together students from various disciplines to address a complex, real-world project which required collaborative input from different perspectives. The studio worked to advance the co-creation of knowledge between external stakeholders, students, and instructors. The course was co-taught by faculty from different disciplines, and areas of expertise. During the semester, Nate Bicak and Steven Hardy worked with students from Architecture and Interior Design in collaboration with students in Dr. Tami Brown-Brandl’s students in Biological Systems Engineering and Animal Science to explore the values, spatial qualities, and area requirements of a Robotic Demonstration, Research, and Engagement …

Kanbar College Faculty Papers

This paper presents the results of 'Light4Health' (L4H), a three-year EU Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership grant project (2019-2021), which investigated, systematized and taught health-related research on the impact of natural and artificial light on human health and well-being relevant to indoor lighting design. The objective was to re-think evidence-based lighting design approaches for residential, working/educational, and healthcare spaces, in order to develop a novel cross-disciplinary eLearning platform, that intersects lighting design and current peer-reviewed health research through a select combination of the most relevant research, methods, and tools. The content was developed through teaching workshops with international researchers, teachers, and students. …

Remembered Spaces: Reframing Architecture From Body To Building, Shaan Lyngdoh Lakshmanan May 2022

Remembered Spaces: Reframing Architecture From Body To Building, Shaan Lyngdoh Lakshmanan

Architecture Senior Theses

Our bodies act as instruments to record sensations received from the world that surrounds us. The internal world we create is how we perceive, remember, and preserve the external world. The process is essential to the continual formation of ourselves.

This thesis aims to reframe the values we place on architectural representation, from the objective, novel, cartesian parameters of architecture to qualities of emotion and place. The device for this reframing is the remembered space, which is an architecture that exists in our memories. It is within the remembered space that we begin to understand how a space was inhabited.

Masters in Architecture Program: Theses

One of the best streets to explore in Omaha is N. 24th Street. Many buildings showcase larger than life, vibrant murals that express the creative nature and spirit of this part of historic North Omaha. The murals represent a healing element for the community; many murals cover structures that are in various states of disrepair. Community gardens have risen to fill voids left by traumatic development practices, such as the implementation of the north freeway.

Despite having lost a large part of its heritage, including hundreds of homes and businesses that were destroyed to make way for the north freeway, …

Educational Design: Does The Design Of A Learning Environment Effect How A Student Learns?, Terrie Larsen

Interior Design Program: Theses and Other Student Work

New 21st Century classroom layouts have evolved from the studies of several educational researchers and their findings over the past century. In conjunction with universities across the world, researchers developed progressive outlooks of what the built environment can offer to the newest generation of learners. Their studies have coined several terms such as Active Learning Classrooms (ALC), Student Centered Active Learning Environment for Undergraduate Programs (SCALE-UP) and Technology Enabled Active Learning (TEAL). These classroom models represent higher learning studies for more effective 21st century learning environments. Some of the models include a specific style of table and number …

Loop Advertising is a marketing agency whose goal is to bring equity, diversity, and inclusivity to advertisements. They offer a wide range of services and primarily work with some representative banks in Canada such as TD, to assist them in embracing diversity in their advertisements. The design concept for Loop Advertising is centered around the progress flag. This flag is a reinterpretation of the 6 colour pride flag to include people of colour. Our design goal was to celebrate marginalized communities who are typically underrepresented in the media. Each colour of the flag along with its meaning is incorporated it …

Broken Chair Chaconne, Anthony Elia

Bridwell Library Research

In March 2022, I was working at my computer when this increasingly rickety chair collapsed beneath me! It was time to get back to responsible eating and get a new chair. But amid the intensive planning and production of The Festival of Form: John Cage and the Infinite Human events, it occurred to me that I could play around with the ideas of music, sound, noise, and silence, and particularly the unconventional experiments of notation and scoring. Shortly after this chair broke, I took a sharpie pen to it and began to notate it like a score, along with some …

Renew is the un-official 4th R in reduce, reuse, recycle; and is the driving concept of the Paisley Eatery. The focal point for giving life to the space is a sustainable green wall that improves the quality of air while bringing a pleasing aesthetic to the space. To help renew the space I am strengthening the building by using sustainably sourced heavy timber for columns, wall studs, and rafters; durable, and sustainable wood siding is used to keep the historical charm while lowering the up keep of the facade.

The Regal Archive project aims to construct a building that is sustainable, functionable and at the same time, has its own personality. The inspiration has been drawn directly from the image of leaves, or tree branches, stacking on top of each other. There will be a lot of open spaces, floor openings, lots of windows that make use of natural sunlight. Being able to see floor stacked on floor, all the way from top to bottom provides a great sense of verticality to the guests, and add more depth to the building’s context, as if one is to stand on …

The old silo building is a heavy timber construction. The 3D wall section shows the design of the wall I have chosen to be used in the office, art gallery and pottery studio. The exterior wall material selected is wood planks as wanted to maintain the heritage look and pay respect to the old look of the building. Another reason to choose wood is that it is durable, sustainable, and efficient. Exterior sheathing is used instead of plywood to make the non-combustible building construction. Semi-rigid (mineral fibre wool) insulation is used above grade and is tripled. The roof material is …

Welcome to Paisley Mill! A newly renovated stone mill which features a coffee shop with a bakery, a lounge space, and a hobby shop. I’ve decided to display my section at this location because it shows how the proposed bakery connects to the existing silo structure. The bakery proposal is the main highlight of my design. I specifically wanted to show the viewing window from the coffee shop into the bakery because this is the main feature that connects the two programs together. I am emphasizing the idea of connection with how the baked goods are made and being freshly …

Focusing on harmony between architecture and nature, we strive to put sustainability in the forefront with this design of the Paisley Butterfly Conservatory. In this wall section we highlight the green roof, the green wall, and rainwater recycling. Keeping the original Paisley Mill’s timber construction and wood siding we hope to reduce the amount of waste needed in construction. Through use of a green roof, we will allow the rainwater we harvest to irrigate the green wall. Designed using new, emerging green wall technology a large portion of the walls in the butterfly conservatory will be layered with substrate, growing …

This section cut goes through the middle of the building and shows the details of the walls and reveals the interior to show what activities go on within the wellness center. The construction components are also shown, using wood timber for columns and web joist for the framing, black oak wood siding for the exterior and also the aluminum red mullions to make the building more vibrant. With nature all around and the classical style of the residential buildings, the modern community center really pops out. Also having curtain walls really brings the feeling of nature throughout the building, so …

The design intent for this site is for locals to socialize, learn, and to lounge. The building structure is heavy timber wood structure supporting a four-storey building. The timber columns and beams will be preserved and kept in place to keep the historical value. The original building was not insulated; therefore, rigid insulation will be added on the exterior face of the sheathing to prevent thermal bridging. The existing wood siding will also be replaced with new siding. On the last floor, the exterior wall will be replaced by curtain wall. Also, on the north side the interior stairs will …

The 3D wall section cuts through the adjacent part of the existing and new construction on the northeast side of the building. The main intent of the section is to demonstrate how the existing and the new parts of the building are integrated into each other on the basis of spatial design and wood frame construction. Also, this section puts emphasis on the differentiation of separation of the exterior and the interior of the building. It shows the balcony areas where the tourists and the locals can enjoy the view of the Teeswater river and the natural scenery around while …
