Despite the fact that America is aging, the trend for many cities is to appeal to the Millennial (born between 1977 and 1995) and Generation X (born between 1965 and 1976) populations. Most literature in planning and urban development has focused on appealing to the upcoming generation of young professionals who prefer public transportation and living downtown in walkable communities. New building construction is expanding though new rental housing is mostly targeted toward those with higher incomes, affordable housing is not increasing to the same degree.
