Architectural Education And Accreditation In The People’S Republic Of China, Gregory S. Palermo

The following comments were made at the plenary meeting concluding the 1994 accreditation visits conducted by the PRC National Board on Architectural Accreditation (NBAA), under the auspices of the Architectural Society of China (ASC), and the Ministry of Construction (MOC). Four architecture programs first accredited by the NBAA in 1991 had midterm revisits: Tsinghua in Beijing; Tongji in Shanghai; Tianjin University; and South East University in Nanjing. Four were visited for initial accreditation: Chongqing Jianzhu University; South China Polytechnical in Guangzhou; Harbin and Xi’an Universities.

This project is an exploration on building environmental performance. On it we will use different advanced simulation tools like DesignBuilder and Climate Consultant to analyze a recommended building. We are focusing on the Mamakating Visitor Center in Sullivan County, New York as our case study. Our first studies included analyzing the site conditions and elements such as wind, sun, climate, and weather. We studied the environment surrounding the building and its climate using the two software mentioned above. We found that during the winter, we should block the wind and get more sun in. The purpose of this master’s project thesis is to explore and implement the necessary professional museum practices to care for and preserve the private Vietnam War-era slide collection of Kenneth L. Swain Jr., an Air Force veteran. Through museum practices presented by leading museum professionals, the slide collection was examined and a plan implemented for slide care and maintenance. In conjunction with the preservation of this slide collection, an exhibition was curated in honor of Swain’s unique photo-documentary slide collection.

In Saitama, Japan, a series of experimental studies has been conducted inside an outdoor scale model canopy to find an effective design solution of water bodies for improving urban thermal environmentand pedestrian comfort. Thus, the study result may help designers and planners to manage tradeoffs between the cooling effect demands, land-use limits and other design elements in urban environments. By modifying its physical properties, the present study shows a clear evidence of the mitigating capacity of urban water bodies. Many mosques in East Java are built by the Nahdliyin and are culturally affiliated to Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the biggest Indonesian moderate Muslim organization. NU maintains a specific value system as the continuation of the Wali Sanga tradition. This paper discusses the representation of these values and traditions in the contemporary mosques of Nahdliyin in Malang, East Java. These mosques are where a great basis of the Nahdliyin experiences dynamic interaction with other Muslim groups take place. The results show that despite their pluralistic formal expressions, these contemporary mosques of Nahdliyinshare similar values and traditions with Wali Sanga mosques.

It is most prevalent within the research literature on the relationship between neighborhood environments and public health but has been used as diverse as disaster recovery, ecology and wildlife habitat, and urban design. Despite hypothesized reports of urban environments being less conducive to good mental health then natural environments, few studies have investigated the effects of urban form characteristics (size, density, nuisances, transportation, and housing characteristics) and mental health measures at the city level. In this study, three academic buildings which were designed and built to LEED certification standards were targeted in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The overall concept for this outdoor concrete shell structure, located in Furstliche Park in Inzigkofen, Germany, is derived from an abstracted ginkgo leaf. Drawing on inspiration from a poem about the two parts of the ginkgo leaf becoming one, we took the approach of combining both the natural and built environment into one cohesive piece. To connect the two, it was imperative that we place the shell on the site as to have the smallest impact.
