The Lived Experience Of Online Educators: Insights From Construction Management, William Sher, Anthony Williams, Maria T. Northcote

Maria Northcote

Academics in higher education institutions often experience the conflicting demands of teaching, research and administration. With the growth of online education these staff are frequently required to design, develop, teach, facilitate and, in some cases, administer online courses. Cumulatively these additional tasks challenge academics, not only in terms of the personal professional development but also in accommodating the range of tasks expected of them. This paper reports the findings of a study which investigated the lived experience of construction management academics teaching at universities in Australia. The study adopted a lived experience research approach that enabled the lives of construction …

Postscript Essay For Phd Thesis Dissertation [Ethny A. Stewart, "The Disciplinary Practices And Processes Of Critique In A Third-Year Architecture Design Studio," University Of California Santa Barbara,Ca, December 2016], Thomas Fowler Iv

Thomas Fowler IV, DPACSA, FAIA

This is a timely research project – the study of the disciplinary practices and processes of the design studio. From my experiences of over 2 decades teaching at three institutions (22 at this central coast university) and a similar number of years working as a practicing architect, this research comes at an important time — since this learning environment has not been the focus of much prior research. There are also a number of myths that are not true about the design studio, that range from a classroom environment that has no structure and the difficultly in assessing what is …

Lightweight Material Prototypes Using Dense Bundled Systems To Emulate An Ambient Environment, Chris Knapp, Jonathan Nelson, Andrew Kudless, Sascha Bohnenberger

Jonathan J Nelson

This paper describes and reflects upon a computational design and digital fabrication research project that was developed and implemented over 2014-2015, with subsequent development continuing for applications at present. The aim of the research was to develop methods of modelling, analysis, and fabrication that facilitate integrative approaches to architectural design and construction. In this context, the development of material prototypes, digital simulations, and parametric frameworks were pursued in parallel in order to inform and reform successive iterations throughout the process, leading to a refined workflow for engineering, production, and speculation upon future directions of the work.

Intangible And Tangible Heritage In A Cross-Cultural Setting: Integrity Versus Profit, John Skrzypaszek Nov 2016

Intangible And Tangible Heritage In A Cross-Cultural Setting: Integrity Versus Profit, John Skrzypaszek

John Skrzypaszek

The paper explores the impact of cross-cultural integration on the intangible and tangible heritage and its sustainability. It argues that the processes of acculturation generate a distancing between the original creators of the heritage and the narratives attached to the cultural entities in a new setting. The named detachment demises the originality and uniqueness of the local heritage expressed in language, rites, dressing, greetings, music, folklore, religion, cultural monuments, and sites. More so detrimental to the original ‘spirit of the place,’ are the new cultural modes imposed by time and change. In the context of the named challenges, this study …

University Entry Score: Is It A Consideration For Spatial Performance In Architecture Design Students?, Ken Sutton, Anthony Williams, Danika Tremain, Peter W. Kilgour Nov 2016

University Entry Score: Is It A Consideration For Spatial Performance In Architecture Design Students?, Ken Sutton, Anthony Williams, Danika Tremain, Peter W. Kilgour

Peter Kilgour

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide an insight into the relationship between students’ spatial ability and their university entrance score (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank [ATAR]). The ATAR provides entry into university studies but does not necessary provide a good measure of students’ spatial skills. Spatial abilities are fundamental to success in many design courses. This paper aims to show whether the ATAR is a good predictor of spatial skills and considers the implications of this.

Design/methodology/approach – Students entering university design courses in architecture were tested three times during their rst year using a three-dimensional (3D) …

Community Partnership As A Foundation For Scholarship, Pedagogy, And Research—An Interactive Session, Nadia Anderson, Carl A. Rogers, Lynn Paxson, Kristin Nelson, Courtney Long, Julia Badenhope Nov 2016

Community Partnership As A Foundation For Scholarship, Pedagogy, And Research—An Interactive Session, Nadia Anderson, Carl A. Rogers, Lynn Paxson, Kristin Nelson, Courtney Long, Julia Badenhope

Nadia M. Anderson

In Good Deeds Good Design, Roberta Feldman states that empowering community design facilitates effective, informed decision-making by “people who have traditionally had minimal say” (Feldman, 2003, 110). Doing this requires designers to consider communities as partners rather than clients and see their work as a collective endeavor rather than a professional gift. At Iowa State University, faculty in multiple departments are using partnership-based outreach methods to generate disciplinary and trans-disciplinary projects engaging studio teaching, research, and scholarship. Critical to these projects is the idea that partnership inverts the traditional power relationship between designers and underserved communities by valuing local knowledge …

Parametric Design Strategies For The Generation Of Creative Designs, Juhyun Lee, Ning Gu, Anthony Williams Oct 2016

Parametric Design Strategies For The Generation Of Creative Designs, Juhyun Lee, Ning Gu, Anthony Williams

Anthony Williams

As one of the emerging Computer-Aided Design (CAD) technologies for digital design and visualisation in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) domain, parametric design potentially offers an innovative way of generating new design solutions. Despite this potential, design strategies associated with algorithmic scripting are not well understood. This paper provides a comprehensive understanding of individual design strategies supporting creative solutions in parametric design, using the combined application of protocol analysis and Consensual Assessment Technique (CAT). The article examines the generative and evolutionary aspects of parametric design that play an important role in the generation of creative designs. An in-depth analysis …

Group-Work: Does It Have To Be That Bad?, Anthony Williams, L Henry, R Tucker, N Abassi

Anthony Williams

Many accreditation bodies and universities require the graduate attribute of “an ability to work in teams” or to “effectively collaborate”. Students invariably dislike working in groups maintaining that “malingerers ride on the back” of those students who work hard and contribute effectively to the outcomes of the group or team. This is the context in which an ALTC/OLT project was established, the project is to consider ways of enhancing group-work in Architecture and design related disciplines. The project has identified the issues associated with group-work, from the perspective of student and lecturer, and has begun to develop strategies to overcome …

Exploring Design Strategy In Parametric Design To Support Creativity, Juhyun Lee, Ning Gu, Anthony Williams Oct 2016

Exploring Design Strategy In Parametric Design To Support Creativity, Juhyun Lee, Ning Gu, Anthony Williams

Anthony Williams

This paper deals with the generative and evolutionary aspects of parametric design. We aim to provide a better understanding of individual design strategies to support creativity in parametric design via protocol analysis. An in-depth analysis conceptualises subjects’ creative strategies into two models: problem-driven strategy and solution-driven strategy. The solution-driven strategy progress design in the solution space resulted in the highest value in the level of creativity. This is one of potential aspects of parametric design. Exploring design strategies in parametric design contributes to its effective use.

A Semiotic Framework To Understand How Signs In A Collective Design Task Convey Information: A Pilot Study Of Design In An Open Crowd Context, Darin Phare, Ning Gu, Anthony Williams, Carmel Laughland Oct 2016

A Semiotic Framework To Understand How Signs In A Collective Design Task Convey Information: A Pilot Study Of Design In An Open Crowd Context, Darin Phare, Ning Gu, Anthony Williams, Carmel Laughland

Anthony Williams

A leading factor in reshaping boundaries between participatory design and co-creation is the power of crowd-sourcing; however crowd sourced design often produces less innovative results than smaller expert design teams. In design, representation plays a fundamental role whilst in crowd sourced design the collective interaction with representations is restricted. We propose more effective design in collective intelligence lies in the crowd’s ability to generate meaningful contributions via the content of shared representations. In order to investigate this, the current paper examines how meanings are generated through the use of visual representations. We introduce a semiotic framework to understand the mechanisms …

Drawing As Process, Drawing As Creation.Pdf, Andreas Luescher

Andreas Luescher

In this paper I will examine the different pedgogical styles of two Swiss professors, one from the school of architecture, and the other from the school of business. Both educators practice teaching methods for creative thinking, underlined by techniques of representation through drawing and sketching. In this context, the terms drawing and sketching are used interchangeably as tools for knowledge construction and sharing. In the words of Peter Jenny, a Professor Emeritus and Chair of Visual Design at the ETH,one shouldn’t teach only drawing skills, but also visual perception and the joy of experimenting and using one’s imagination. In his …

Between Design And Digital: Bridging The Gaps In Architectural Education, Shelby Doyle, Nick Senske Aug 2016

Between Design And Digital: Bridging The Gaps In Architectural Education, Shelby Doyle, Nick Senske

Shelby Elizabeth Doyle

Developing technologies, such as computational design and digital fabrication, are transforming the design and construction of contemporary architecture. Today, architecture schools are tasked with introducing digital technologies as they are changing, creating an opportunity to develop innovative curricula and democratize access to these skills. However, the understanding of how to teach digital technology as an essential design skill has not kept pace with these rapid changes. Design education and digital technology education continue to be seen as separate loci of learning, separated by pedagogical gaps and teaching mindsets.

Exploring Learning Objectives For Digital Design In Architectural Education, Shelby Doyle, Nick Senske Aug 2016

Exploring Learning Objectives For Digital Design In Architectural Education, Shelby Doyle, Nick Senske

Shelby Elizabeth Doyle

: What are the objectives of teaching digital design in architecture? While this seems a rather primitive inquiry it in fact is loaded with misunderstanding and disagreement. This paper aims to bring accepted educational research about learning objectives into the discussion of digital design’s relationship to architecture. In particular, Bloom’s Taxonomy is introduced and referenced as a tool for creating clarity, transparency, and accountability among educators. The purpose of reflecting upon learning objectives for digital design in architecture is not to produce a definitive list of what students ought to learn. Learning objectives are written for specific curricula, student needs, …

“The problem with a tent is that when you use it you throw it away, so it’s money that melts.”–Alejandro Aravena The social project of architecture has long been fascinated with emergency and refugee housing as a primary unit of architectural and urban development. For decades, architects have proposed alternatives to the United Nations’ blue tent cities that are the principal image associated with humanitarian aid and its resulting urbanism. During the 2016 Venice Biennale Reporting from the Front, curator Alejandro Aravena challenges architects to reconsider the discipline’s relationship to society’s most urgent challenges. The ongoing European refugee crisis is …

Bringing Bauhaus Back: Digital Architecture + Contemporary Craft, Shelby Elizabeth Doyle Aug 2016

Bringing Bauhaus Back: Digital Architecture + Contemporary Craft, Shelby Elizabeth Doyle

Shelby Elizabeth Doyle

“The Bauhaus believes the machine to be our modern medium of design and seeks to come to terms with it.” –Walter Gropius, The Theory and Organization of the Bauhaus German architect Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in 1919 and after fourteen prolific years, it closed. Despite its short tenure, the ramifications of the Bauhaus are still present in architectural education and practice. Its core objective was a radical, and still unrealized, concept: the unity of art and technology. The introduction of contemporary digital tools, techniques, and materials make this unity possible in new and profound ways thereby extending the Bauhaus …

Soft Skills For Digital Designers, Shelby Doyle, Nick Senske Aug 2016

Soft Skills For Digital Designers, Shelby Doyle, Nick Senske

Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) technologies have become commonplace in architectural practice as tools of efficiency and production. For these very reasons the introduction of CADD in early architectural curricula has been fraught with anxieties along a continuum: from the undoing of creativity through positivist and reductionist logic 1 to a firm belief that these technologies will revolutionize the way architects practice and think about design. 2 At the same time, there is a presumption that students who have grown up with digital technologies are “digital natives” who possess special aptitudes or insights which are disruptive to learning computing. The …

Crossing Boundaries: Blurring The Lines Between Engineers And Architects, Thomas Fowler Iv, Kevin Dong

Thomas Fowler IV, DPACSA, FAIA

For the past three years an interdisciplinary studio has teamed students, academ- ics, and practitioners to develop a master plan, college buildings and housing designs for a Poly- technic College in Tanzania, Africa. Since 2012, groups of architectural majors and architectur- al engineering majors developed a master plan for the college and most recently developed plans for housing and classroom facilities. The project requires students to think differently – recognizing and developing building solutions which account for cultural differences, material differences, technology differences, and resource differences; when compared to those typically designed for in westernized areas. The driving objective was …

Effects Of Noise, Reverberation And Foreign Accent On Native And Non-Native Listeners’ Performance Of English Speech Comprehension, Zhao Ellen Peng, Lily M. Wang

Lily M Wang

A large number of non-native English speakers may be found in American classrooms, both as listeners and talkers. Little is known about how this population comprehends speech in realistic adverse acoustical conditions. A study was conducted to investigate the effects of background noise level (BNL), reverberation time (RT), and talker foreign accent on native and non-native listeners' speech comprehension, while controlling for English language abilities. A total of 115 adult listeners completed comprehension tasks under 15 acoustic conditions: three BNLs (RC-30, RC-40, and RC-50) and five RTs (from 0.4 to 1.2 s). Fifty-six listeners were tested with speech from native …
