Issues Facing Design Professionals Through The Lens Of Two Rain-Induced Roof Collapses, J. W. Lawson, M. E. Parolini
Architectural Engineering
The drainage of low-sloped roof systems involves multiple design professionals, and often each has a different opinion as to their design responsibility. Roofing issues have been identified as being a number one source of litigation, and rain-induced roof collapses continue to occur with alarming frequency. With the backdrop of several rain-induced roof collapses, this paper illustrates the complexity of assigning design responsibility for drainage systems; and investigates a variety of outcomes associated with the current building code provisions transporting rainwater from large low-sloped roof structures.

An overview is presented of various physical demonstration tools intended to supplement lectures in topic areas that students consistently identify as being troublesome. The article describes the design, fabrication, and implementation of classroom models to help explain flexural behavior and detailing of beams, slabs, and frame systems.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the subject of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) and identify in summary form the principal drivers and current status of Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI), the impact that intelligent software in combination with the Internet serving as a Global Knowledgebase is already having on human capabilities, the likely path to ASI, the possible threats posed by ASI and proposed measures to curtail those threats, and finally the potential benefits to the human species if AGI and ASI remain under human control.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) organized the Civil Engineering Program Criteria Task Committee in October 2012 whose charge is to determine if the current ABET Civil Engineering Program Criteria (CEPC) should be changed to reflect one or more of the 24 outcomes of the second edition of the Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge published in 2008. After two years of work, a proposed CEPC has been approved by the relevant ASCE committees and forwarded to ABET for approval and incorporation into accreditation criteria. The City of San Luis Obispo (SLO) has eleven official public open spaces. Managing these places presents a challenge in providing top-tier environmental stewardship, while also accommodating passive recreational use and access, in an era of fiscal limitations and competing priorities. Given that reality and the changing population dynamics in the US, providing equal access to these facilities is of increasing importance, whether by car, bike, on foot or via public transit. Cargo bikes are becoming increasingly available in the United States with vendors such as Yuba, Trek, XtraCycle, and Marin all offering platforms. While a large body of research has continued to investigate traditional bike transportation, cargo bikes offer the potential to capture trips for those that might otherwise be made by car. To investigate this, a survey was conducted querying how use and travel characteristics changed upon cargo bike ownership (N = 299; 95% Confidence Interval +/-6%).

This report resulted from the work developed by an undergraduate class from the California State University San Luis Obispo from September 22, 2014 to December 5, 2014. Under a contract with the City of Wasco’s Planning Department, the CRP 341 Urban Design Studio III studio developed a vision and urban design concepts for the Highway 46 Corridor in Wasco.
