The Contribution To And Affect Of Design And Architecture On Health & Activity Promotion (H&Ap) In The Workplace, Krystal L. Schumacher

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Expanding the research and awareness on the contribution to and affect of design and architecture on health and activity promotion in the workplace (h&ap) is essential in moving forward in the design of working environments. As humans, we spend the majority of our time indoors, for an average American adult he or she spends the majority of the day in a working environment. The impact that our spaces have is much deeper than the aesthetic. Our environments can depict how we act, feel and operate based on the design of our surroundings. Through this research, the goal was to study …

Structure As Architecture, Architects As Engineers, Altin Bidaj, Irakli Premti, Hektor Cullufi Nov 2013

Structure As Architecture, Architects As Engineers, Altin Bidaj, Irakli Premti, Hektor Cullufi

UBT International Conference

The construction challenges and opportunities demand a new kind of professional, with expertise in structural analysis, architectural design, systems engineering, information technology, and management. A decision has to be made regarding the extent to which structure should be exposed in an architectural design. For doing the right choice the architects should have a very good knowledge of structural engineering concepts and materials applications. Structural exposure should be limited to buildings where structure integrates with and clearly strengthens the expression of architectural ideas. Having a huge number of structural possibilities, designers and architects have considerable freedom of choice. In this article …

Symbolism And Poetics Of Autogenic Space And Structures – The New Design Approach On Mosque As Representative Building (Design Proposal For The Central Mosque Of Prishtina As Case Study), Banush Shyqeriu, Kushtrim Hajdari

UBT International Conference

The congregation Mosque, Masjid (from Arabic, sujúd = prostration to God) is one of the most important institutions of Muslim world, also the predominant built form of Muslim architecture. Having a basic spatial configuration to create “shelter” for prayer, it is evoking how the simple space bears meaning that generates symbolism. This paper tries to de-construct and re-construct the Mosque as a representative built form. By using our Design Proposal for the Central Mosque of Prishtina as Case Study, we emphasize an “organic” approach towards Mosque design through a methodology of integral contextualization and conception as the new “typology”, by …

The Interdisciplinary Design Studio: Identifyingcollaboration, Thomas Fowler Iv, Kevin Dong, James Doerfler

Thomas Fowler IV, DPACSA, FAIA

Intuitively designers know that teamwork is necessary to produce a cohesive project. Collaborative team work, or team work across disciplines, is a fundamental basis for firms such as Arups and Buro Happold among others and these firms are known for producing innovative work as a result of their collaborative efforts. Studies have shown that collaborative efforts can produce new and original ideas not possible in a uni-disciplinary setting1. The potential to develop intriguing design solutions while requiring students to work in multi-disciplinary teams is one of the primary goals for an ongoing design studio course at the California …

Popularity Of Virtual Reality Immersion In Theme Park Attractions Of North America, Jessica A. Jelinski May 2013

Popularity Of Virtual Reality Immersion In Theme Park Attractions Of North America, Jessica A. Jelinski

Honors Theses

Theme parks continually change to incorporate new technology. Since the development of virtual reality, designers of theme park attractions have utilized several different immersion technology systems. Most of the current attractions are based on the Head-Mounted Display system and the Cave Automatic Virtual Environment system. To date, few studies or papers have been published concerning the effect virtual reality and the accompanying immersion technology may have on theme park attractions. One hundred and seventy-eight attractions from eight theme parks were categorized based on level of immersion and then analyzed for this study. Wait times for these attractions were used to …

Connection Through (Re)Use: Repurposing Kingsport, Tennessee's Industrial Landscapes, Patrick Nathan Osborne May 2013

Connection Through (Re)Use: Repurposing Kingsport, Tennessee's Industrial Landscapes, Patrick Nathan Osborne

Masters Theses

This thesis seeks to promote industrial reuse and sustainable planning principles as catalysts for adaptive redesign of public space in Kingsport, Tennessee. During the middle to late decades of the 19th century, the southeastern United States experienced a period of extreme industrial acceleration, stemming from the mining, manufacturing, and transportation advances of the Industrial Revolution. Concurrently, a transatlantic transition toward utopian planning principles was being cultivated by Briton Ebenezer Howard under the Garden City movement. Garden cities were planned, carefully zoned communities, containing designated areas for commerce, industry, and living. In 1919, American landscape architect John Nolen developed a plan …

On The Environmental Factors That Alleviate Relocation Stress Syndrome In Residents Of Long-Term Care Facilities, Amber Lois Williams Mar 2013

On The Environmental Factors That Alleviate Relocation Stress Syndrome In Residents Of Long-Term Care Facilities, Amber Lois Williams

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study intends to investigate the stress experienced by the elderly during the relocation process. Relocation stress syndrome occurs when a senior is moved from a familiar environment to an unfamiliar environment. The shock of the transition causes medical conditions to worsen, which can result in serious illness, possibly death. "Moving to a nursing home entails a complete lifestyle change, the trauma of which is compounded when the patient is ill or in pain and the move is unanticipated" (Morse, 2000, p. 24AAA). I have researched reasons why seniors relocate to long-term care facilities in order to better understand the …

They are intended to be the beginning of a dynamic conversation between designers, environmental consultants and constructors, university stakeholders, and users of new high performance buildings.

Interactive Music Experience, Gaetan Jacques Jan 2013

Interactive Music Experience, Gaetan Jacques

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

In February of 2012, alternative rock band OK Go released a music video for their song “Needing/Getting”. The video explores a creative way of playing music, by driving a car through a constructed, choreographed environment. A driving track was set up as a large musical instrument which was “played” by a car. Architects, musicians, and artist are looking for innovative ways to develop active relationships between people, music, and architecture. The traditional passive relationship of these three is static, a design that does not promote interaction or participation. If we consider, behind a performance, there is a great deal of …

Problems: (1) Sound travels very quick around the curve of the wall creating a disproportional amount of sound on the opposite ends of the arc. (2) Sounds that start in front of the curve gets reflected back to a focal point. The location of that focal point moves depending on where the sound is located. As a result, loud refocused echoes are created at the focal point. When heard, the sounds seem to come from a mysterious place. The effects of the curved walls are extremely strong and need to be addressed. One common mistake is over applying absorptive material …
