Sustainable Studies

When planning for a trail system on site, the group was asked to design an aesthetically pleasing, universally accessible trails system on the pre-existing property for the center which would act as “sanctity” and peaceful spaces with minimal manipulation of the grounds. The team was asked to incorporate native plants, which would create new sustainable ecosystems, and to develop information stations that would inform visitors about the ecosystem and environment at St. Mary’s. The team was also tasked with finding ways in which local artists could contribute sustainable related artwork to the site.

The Baptist Church in Warren is located in the Warren Waterfront Historic National Register District. Warren also has a Voluntary Historic District. Both the National Register Nomination and the Voluntary Historic District have regulations which pertain to changes to the exterior view shed of the building. Exterior work on this project will need to abide by the State of Rhode Island and the Providence Plantations Rehabilitation Code for existing buildings and structures and the Town of Warren Department of Building and Zoning. A new atrium has been proposed to accommodate the needs of the Barnstable Land Trusts proposed programs. The atrium would provide a well defined, ADA accessible entrance to the building. Design of the new atrium would apply to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for new exterior additions to historic properties. It is recommended that the atrium be constructed on the west façade, after the demolition of 2/3 of the southwest ells.

GuideStar, an online service that provides information on nonprofit organizations in the United States, was used to identify all the nonprofit organizations in downtown Woonsocket, as well as who the executive directors are and the names of people on the board of directors. Internet research was also utilized to access the websites where the students could gather contact information. The names and contact information that were collected were listed in the reference document. The list, to the students’ best abilities, is a comprehensive cross sections of business owners, non-profit leaders, and political leaders.

Most windows in the structure are historic and in fair condition, consisting of double-hung, six-over-six, divided-light windows throughout most of the building and 12-over-8 divided- light windows in the gymnasium. Windows on the first story of the south façade, in the school addition, are wooden and one-over-one.

The primary wood columns and secondary wall studs show a variety of conditions. Most notably, the columns at the foundation level have been cut to remove rotted portions and are now supported by concrete footings. The columns on the first floor level have been reinforced with additional pieces of wood. An additive process of building up the structure is evident, although it is not clear if this is historically original or the results of the repair efforts circa 2005.
