In the last three decades, a number of master planned communities (MPCs) have been developed in South East Queensland (SEQ) as part of the response to the housing demands of rapid population growth. Developers, state government, local councils and communities play key roles in the production and management of infrastructure and community services in these Masterplanned communities. The objective of the paper is to stimulate the dialogue on subtropical design of transit oriented development in SEQ through conversations with six leading urban designers and planners in Queensland. The paper summarises the discussions with key informants on four key aspects; (1) key elements of subtropical TODs; ( 2) good examples of subtropical design in Brisbane and SEQ; (3) challenges to developing subtropical TOD; and (4) ideas/strategies for developing subtropical TODs.
