This course explores the history, aesthetics and development of Asian American and African American places, and views them from the perspective of their subcultural environmental patterns. It focuses on how patterns of living among these groups are developed and represented in the environment. The course explores the intersection of environmental design and cultural studies which suggests that ethical, social and cultural considerations are as important as material and technique in the creation of environments. The goal is to develop an appreciation of the role of ethnic diversity in shaping and giving meaning to the built environment.
