Architecture Senior Theses
Certain major urban elements have been pished into suburban environments to the detriment of cities. The thesis proposed that through investigating the implications of reinserting such a building into the urban condition, it can be demonstrated that both the city and the facility will benefit. The vehicle is the design of a public building which must mediate between its needs and its urban conditions. The project therefore should have a program which has specific requirements and the site should have a strong urban dynamic.

This thesis is to serve as an investigation and response into the architectural issue of scale juxtaposition. In this case the condition which occurs is the result of a modern feat of engineering at one scale, disrupting and imposing itself onto an urban and historical context which is at a more intimate scale. Consequently, there is a loss of identity or spatial relationships in the urban context, which may have existed prior to this modern intervention. It is my goal to take advantage and develop a response to these disparate scales and their images. It is also the opportunity for …

Parametric Excitation Of An Axially Moving Band By Periodic Edge Loading, W-Z Ben Wu, C. D. Mote
Parametric Excitation Of An Axially Moving Band By Periodic Edge Loading, W-Z Ben Wu, C. D. Mote
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Simple torsion parametric resonance and combination torsion-bending parametric resonance can be excited in an axially moving band by an in-plane periodic edge loading that is normal to the longitudinal axis of the band. The model simulates band saws, belts, magnetic tapes and like systems under edge forces. Sum combination instabilities, in particular, permit the excitation of low frequency resonances by higher frequency edge forces. Simple bending, combination torsion-torsion, combination bending-bending and difference type parametric instabilities are not excited by periodic normal edge forces. The space of band parameters leading to parametric instability shrinks with increasing axial tension and with increasing …

Some Uses And Potentials Of Qualitative Methods In Planning, Hemalata C. Dandekar
Some Uses And Potentials Of Qualitative Methods In Planning, Hemalata C. Dandekar
City and Regional Planning
Planners use methods borrowed from many disciplines. These are usually modified and adapted to meet planner's needs to acquire and sift through many diverse information sources helpful in dealing with complex problems. The quantitative methods which planners use are well known, well established in practice, and acknowledged by most as tools of the planners' trade. In contrast to this, most planners also use qualitative methods but these are rarely explicitly acknowledged. In this paper some of the qualitative methods used in planning are identified and categorized into three groups according to the special contribution that they make to the practice …
