This publication is the result of one semester's design work from the Syracuse University Florence Program. Our purpose in compiling this material is two-fold; in presenting this work as an example of the design activity that occurs at the Florence Center, we intend to reveal the unique opportunity that this Program offers to students from the United States. In addition, we are using this vehicle to address the intellectual context within which our students worked during their design process. Giuseppe Vallifuoco and Sergio Petrini (Roman architects and our Visiting Critics) presented a specific bias toward the production of architecture, and …

Modernization Of Agriculture And The Monetization Of A Village Economy In Deccan Maharashtra India, Hemalata C. Dandekar
City and Regional Planning
The focus of everyday life in Sugao revolves around farming. Village activity changes with the agricultural season and farm tasks are the rotating pivot around which village society is organized. The agricultural cycle has traditionally been geared, in the Sugao farmer's mind, to the moon and the astrological sign (of which there are twenty-seven in the Hindu calendar) in dominance at the time. In practice, cultivation tasks have become associated with phases of the Hindu lunar calendar which give the farmer guidance when to do what in his fields. This paper describes some of the changes that have occurred in …

Plan Of Study For Cross Florida Barge Canal: Economic Analysis, United States. Army. Corps Of Engineers. Jacksonville District
Correspondence and Textual Material
At the time of the previous study of transportation savings, commerce in coal primarily for electric power generation could not be ·projected with any degree of accuracy because most electric utilities had not developed firm plans for building new coal-fired plants· or for converting from petroleum products or natural gas to coal at existing plants. Today, with plants already constructed that will burn coal, there is a greater probability of defining coal needs. So there is a need to reevaluate potential coal traffic via the CFBC. Also there is a need to evaluate the other types of benefits mentioned under …

The Visual Arts In The Civilization Classroom, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
The Visual Arts In The Civilization Classroom, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
French Language and Literature Papers
Although the visual arts have long been a feature of civilization courses, instructors do not always exploit their full potential. This paper presents a checklist to help teachers identify the relevant aspects of the arts for study. Its goal is to facilitate comprehensive treatment of works of art by focusing on three areas: the aesthetic dimension, the social context, and the artist’s own experience. The checklist is followed by a series of activities which encourage students to integrate the various aspects of the arts while practicing their language skills.
The Quadrangle Isn't Square
About the Buildings
Many of those who visit and admire the Law Quadrangle assume that it was modelled by architects York and Sawyer on some existing complex of buildings at Oxford or Cambridge. While the Law School's buildings are in the tradition of English Gothic used at other institutions, they are unique and very much more varied in style and use of ornamental detail than is apparent to the casual observer. A recent descriptive evaluation of the Quadrangle written for an architecture class at Michigan by student Paul Weller demonstrates that the buildings are not only original designs but also "tend to represent …

About the Buildings
This is probably the most esthetically satisfying large underground building to have penetrated American soil, though on approach there's almost nothing - arguably not enough - to see, certainly nothing that says "building". Gunnar Birkert's 1981 addition to the University of Michigan's Legal Research Building is part of the venerable 1920s Gothicized law school quadrangle, a visually homogenous complex including library, classrooms, and dormitories. The quad had, as it were, a piece missing at its southeast corner; and it is here under this missing element that Birkerts buried his building.
