Regenerative Refugee Housing: Creating Temporary Housing With Low Environmental Impact, Erika Guldner
Regenerative Refugee Housing: Creating Temporary Housing With Low Environmental Impact, Erika Guldner
Architecture Thesis Prep
Refugee settlements often have a negative environmental impact; by promoting options for sustainable development from the outset, this can be avoided. A plan for a refugee settlement was made, along with a plan for the individual residential units. To expedite the construction process, units were divided into components. These components could be easily assembled on site. Once the refugee settlement is no longer needed, components can be used for other purposes, such as, affordable housing or the components themselves can be broken down to be either recycled or used for other purposes.

Architecture Senior Theses
“Designers cannot just stand by and watch as the refugee crisis unfolds,” and although architects and designers can’t save the world, through design, we can alleviate consequences of scarcity. It’s not about creating a structure that will withstand the ends of time or endure the most extreme climate, it’s about how to respond in an emergency with the most geographically intelligent prototype that utilizes the utmost importance of on site materials so the bare minimum of an instruction manual or few key tools to offset distribution obstacles. This thesis is aimed to design for the 99 in disaster relief.

What is the role of architecture in a conflict situation? Architecture can act after or during a conflict by providing emergency aid, for example, refugee camps. This kind of emergency remedy measure brings a large amount of displaced people to other countries that may address the issue of displacement and interment of refugees in countries all over the world. Refugees may be discriminated and be treated as second class citizens in those countries. They are restricted in a small area like prisoners rather than legal citizens. In order to call attention to this problem and affect the countries which are …

Upon completion of my research I will design a system that allows the
flexibility needed by the people as well as the control the government
and NGO’s are responsible for providing. I will focus on the way playing
with the relevant scale can help to bridge the gap between indi
vidual
and group. Special configuration is a key component in forming
communal spaces. The integration of these spaces on every scale is
fundamental to achieving success. Issues of permanence can be addressed
though alternative building methodologies, and the lessons
learned from indigenous people.
Creating Social Networks: Resettlement Center For Burmese Refugees, Kelly Lynne Clarke
Creating Social Networks: Resettlement Center For Burmese Refugees, Kelly Lynne Clarke
Architecture Theses
The refugee resettlement program in the United States must encourage both the formation of refugee communities and integration within the larger community. I propose a multiuse building to strengthen refugee communities [bonding social networks] and connect refugees to the larger community [bridging social networks]. Both of these connections are essential for refugees to become integrated in a community. The building will be run by Lutheran Social Services who currently assists in the resettlement of refugees in the Springfield, Massachusetts area, with assistance in funding from the Wilson-Fish Discretionary Grant Program which provides financial support for alternative models of resettlement.

"architecture's place in the global flow of people, identity, and the city can no longer be taken for granted. Architecture must consider the current conditions, the past histories, and future prospects of its relationship to identity and place within the changing city."
