This study deals with the question of how architectural design, when applied to his­torical places, can assist in bringing an extremely difficult – notable and troubling – past to the present in meaningful ways. In particular, it examines postwar architectural designs that converted National Socialist perpetrators’ places into documentation centers on National Socialism whose explicit purpose is, above all, to present and discuss the community’s involvement in the National Socialist ideology and actions.

The purpose of this research was to analyze the success of the 1975 Mannheim Bundesgartenschau (BUGA-MA), a highly visible and popular BUGA then and now, in achieving sustainable development. A BUGA is a German Federal Horticulture Show, but it is not simply a one-time exhibition; it is a full-time commitment to sustainable development in German cities and regions. BUGAs are complex undertakings, involving national and regional players, and they are fine-tuned to the sustainable needs of their respective location and culture. This article traces the ways in which competing architectural plans for the Vierzehnheiligen (currently known as the Basilica of the Fourteen Holy Helpers) in Southern Germany evolved from its 1735 until 1744. These changes reflect changing ideas of church architecture and the pragmatic realities of the site.

The residential architecture that defined Berlin's famous boulevard of luxury, the Kurfürstendamm, has receded within the collective memory of Germans and non-Germans on account of the narrative that historians and novelists have presented over the past eighty years. Those writers have focused upon the boulevard's upscale entertainment and retail life, which blossomed in the 1920s. However, the majority of buildings that defined this two-mile avenue were opulent apartment houses completed before 1914, when entertainment and retail establishments were permitted to occupy only the street-level spaces of a few buildings in the boulevard's easternmost section.

This study represents a partial summary of the research that was conducted since 1985, beginning with a Fulbright Scholarship originally intended to investigate the American “roots” of modern housing and the work of architects of lesser prominence than the acknowledged “masters” such as Ferdinand Kramer, who had been a housing specialist of the “New Frankfurt” and who later came to the United States as a refugee.
