Idea, Form, Reality – The Implications Of Natural Ventilation Strategies On Public Buildings In Temperate Maritime Climates, Michael P.G. Haslam May 2019

Idea, Form, Reality – The Implications Of Natural Ventilation Strategies On Public Buildings In Temperate Maritime Climates, Michael P.G. Haslam

Masters

Natural ventilation is one of the prime form givers in environmentally responsive architecture – in its detail and its architecturally charged form of stacks and voids. It facilitates our understanding of a response to natural systems – not just in how it responds visually to warm and cool air but also in the adaptive approach to thermal comfort. The purpose of this research is to investigate the impacts and implications of natural ventilation strategies for different typologies of public and commercial buildings. This is with the aim of attempting to define a vocabulary of ventilation techniques and details that are …

Architectural Ecotone: The Edge Effect, Holly Metzger, Tara Nuqul Apr 2019

Architectural Ecotone: The Edge Effect, Holly Metzger, Tara Nuqul

Architecture Senior Theses

This thesis aims to study the relationship between architecture and its environment. Specifically, this thesis will explore symbiotic relationships between architecture and surrounding ecosystems in many different terrains. Iceland presents a particular important case for this idea because it is a hotbed of geological activity. The country itself is a patchwork of desert, glaciers, geysers, lava fields and active volcano, which has led to Iceland developing intelligent systems of vernacular architecture throughout history to mediate this environment.

This thesis studies systems of domestic vernacular architecture by examining the qualities and characteristics of craft, materiality, structure, and a symbiotic relationship to …

Reshaping Reality: From Disneyland To Dismaland, Lina Wang Oct 2018

Reshaping Reality: From Disneyland To Dismaland, Lina Wang

Architecture Senior Theses

This thesis deals with hyperreality as a key concept to reassess contemporary socio-cultural conditions. Jean Baudrillard once described Disneyland as one of the main examples of hyperreality. By presenting imaginary as more realistic than reality itself, Disneyland draws visitors into the world of escapism and happiness achieved through simulation; it makes the troubles of the real world less relatable. If we wear glasses to view Disneyland more closely, however, we might see many issues behind it. Dismaland is an important reference in this thesis. When asked about the idea and inspiration for his Dismaland project, Banksy stated, "theme parks should …

Architecture Thesis Prep

I’m interested in the kind of constituency that thinks something along these lines: that

thinks, “I can’t believe in any of this stuff. I can’t believe in the doctrines. I don’t think these

doctrines are right. But,” a very important but, “I love Christmas carols. I really like the art

of Mantegna. I really like looking at old churches. I really like turning the pages of the Old

Testament.” Whatever it may be, you know the kind of thing I’m talking about -- people

who are attracted to the ritualistic side, the moralistic, communal side of religion, but can’t

bear …

American Home: Shelter Optimized For Climate, Karen Kentile

Architecture Senior Theses

"Architecture attuned to building form and energy production and consumption can, in turn, suggest an alternate landscape for the country...

This book addresses architecture's role in the energy crisis, recognizing that residential buildings account for 53.7% of the built environment and their gridded energy produces over 21% of the United States' carbon emissions. This thesis begins to implement a process for design which can essentially optimize shelter based on climate, and further develop a local context for dwelling."

Ext Lm02 - Climate And Landscapes, Spring 1993, Roger Kjelgren

University Extension - OCW

This course focuses on maintaining landscapes in the interior west of the United States. The course will instruct you on how to keep plants and trees healthy, how to think through and solve problems related to landscape maintenance, and how to maintain landscape with as little intervention as possible through understanding the needs of the plants.

This course is the second in a series of videos that offers a wide variety of information about landscape maintenance. Specifically, this module examines plants and their relationship to macroclimates and microclimates.

The Effects Of Geographical And Climatic Setting On The Economic Advantages Of Alternative Flood Control Measures, Clyde R. Dempsey, L. Douglas James Jan 1968

The Effects Of Geographical And Climatic Setting On The Economic Advantages Of Alternative Flood Control Measures, Clyde R. Dempsey, L. Douglas James

KWRRI Research Reports

It has long been realized that tributary urban development and channel improvement greatly affect the flow regime in a given watershed. A previous study used the Stanford Watershed Model to derive relationships expressing how the flood peaks in Sacramento, California, might be expected to vary with changing conditions of urbanization, channelization, and tributary drainage area. In order to observe the effects of climatic setting and geographical location on these relationships, the same type of analysis was applied to a drainage area near Louisville, Kentucky.

If reservoir storage is to be considered in a flood control program, it is necessary to …
