This research is a case study examining the relevance of three holistic city frameworks—Compassionate Cities, Healthy Cities, and UN Sustainable Development Goals—to the intentional or tacit thinking of city leaders, community leaders, and activists of Marina, California. In the 2013 spring quarter, the City and Regional Planning Department at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo partnered with the City of Goleta to develop a vision plan for the Old Town area. The collaboration between the University and the City included two (2) community meetings and four (4) weekend engagement activities. This vision plan was created and written specifically for the residents of Old Town Goleta. The primary reason for its existence is to produce development and planning ideas for the City of Goleta.

Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
Local land use planning has profound impacts on environmental quality; however, few empirical studies have been conducted to systematically measure local land use plans’ environmental assessment quality and to identify the factors influencing it. This paper analyzes the quality of 40 Environmental Impact Reports (EIRs) of local jurisdictions’ land use plans in California. A plan evaluation protocol defined by five core components and sixty-three indicators is developed to measure the quality of local land use plans’ EIRs. The descriptive results indicate that the local jurisdictions produce relatively good quality on its EIRs, but there is still much room for improvement. …

Design work from the 2004 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Art Center Expansion. Jenda Michl. The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena asked the studio to design an alternative solution for the expansion of their South Campus. The form of this project is based on lyrical lines of defined program and pedestrian roofscape which grow like branches of a tree from the existing Raymond Building, to form dormitories and street-front studios before intertwining with a depressed Glenarm Street to create a circulation node.
