The American highway is nationly used for commerce and commuting, but it creates diverse lifestyles as well. The cross-country highway and road trip are deeply rooted in the American psyche, supported the vast Federal Highway Network and the rapid growth in ownership of automobiles by American families since the 1940s, establishing a sense of freedom in their mobile lifestyles. Other highway users have less control over their daily routine.

The visitor travels on a pace towards a closer personal relationship with the product understanding its history components and underlying generative concepts. Visitors will gain valuable information about Volvo’s products but they will not feel forced to purchase anything. They may later decide to purchase a Volvo because they have reached a total understanding of the product and recognize it as a logically optimal solution to a personal need.

"To deal with the abundance of vehicles, much of the land immediately surrounding highways is occupied by parking facilities. These facilities, however, are neither spatially nor economically beneficial to the site, and are considered voids as they lack any meaningful use or activity. The scales of highways and pedestrians must be reconciled and the voids activated in order for cities to continue to survive with the ever-increasing presence of transportation infrastructure."
