The Tourist And The Toured: How Hostel Owners Navigate The Age Of Global Gentrification, Brianna Bilter

Since the mid-1990s, numerous Moroccan riads, or traditional homes built around a central courtyard, have been converted into tourist accommodations in Morocco’s old medinas. This paper seeks to analyze the impact of riad-style hostels specifically on the medinas, as hostels are relatively new to Morocco and have various benefits and consequences for the community. Though hostels are often portrayed as a sustainable form of tourist accommodation compared to multinational hotel corporations, they have an acute impact by bringing tourists into previously residential spaces and exacerbating the effects of global gentrification. Río Grande, Argentina tiene un sistema de reservas naturales urbanas (RNUs) que comenzó en 2012 para proteger el hábitat de las aves migratorias en la ciudad. En este proyecto, estudié las actividades y las percepciones de los visitantes de una de estas reservas, RNU Laguna de los Patos. Digitally-mediated practices of archaeological data require reflexive thinking about where archaeology stands as a discipline in regard to the ‘digital,’ and where we want to go. To move toward this goal, we advocate a historical approach that emphasizes contextual source-side criticism and data intimacy—scrutinizing maps and 3D data as we do artifacts by analyzing position, form, material and context of analog and digital sources. Applying this approach, we reflect on what we have learned from processes of digitally-mediated data. We ask: What can we learn as we convert analog data to digital data? The urbanization project unfolding in Villa 31 in Buenos Aires is one of the largest and most well funded projects of its type. At its inception, the project sought to integrate Villa 31 with the rest of Buenos Aires. The project looked to incorporate Villa 31, a low-income neighborhood, in the city into the fabric of the bustling Buenos Aires. Flooding has become the new normal in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). During the rainy season, many areas of the city experience severe inundation that seriously impacts infrastructure, traffic, and economic transactions. As the effects of climate change unpredictably and rapidly manifest in Southern Vietnam, the frequency and impact of urban floods are projected to increase. In addition, within the last few decades, HCMC has rapidly developed and urbanized, transforming itself into the economic center of Southern Vietnam. Finding aid only for Folklife Archives Project 1245. A collection of materials relating to research on the Felts Log House undertaken by Betsy Tyrie and Colin Stephen. The documentation seeks to interpret the social aspects of the log house as well as architectural changes made to the structure over the course of nearly 150 years. The report also provides insight into the house’s history, its construction, and its eventual relocation to WKU’s campus in the late 1970s. Recorded audio interviews, black and white and color photographs, newspaper articles, and a brief personal essay are also included in the collection.
