Urban Stitch: Reinventing Housing In The Globalized Urban Realm For Chinese Migrant Workers, Jennifer Hoi Ling Ha

Micro_Casa, Amanda Jones Oct 2010

Micro_Casa, Amanda Jones

Architecture Senior Theses

"Neighborhoods with block after block of monolithic homes, which can be seen as far as the eye can see, are constructed by large conglomerate companies whose goal is to create the largest number of homes in the smallest area in order to achieve the largest amount of profit... The question becomes, what can we learn from this intensive use of space and how can it inform a design project that attempts to intensify use of space in the existing footprint of these communities in an intensification of uses that is informed by the informal relationships that already exist."

Invasive Ruins, Carey R. Walker Apr 2010

Invasive Ruins, Carey R. Walker

Architecture Senior Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to search for a way in which architecture can become a tool used to create a new definition for age-value and historic-value. Instead of proposing an architecture typology that will exist and be admired 'forever', the proposal becomes a suggestion of ruin; to allow the new building language to age over time alongside with its natural site."

Conspicuous Space: Parking Lot Suburbanism, Ian Nicholson Apr 2010

Conspicuous Space: Parking Lot Suburbanism, Ian Nicholson

Architecture Senior Theses

"Locating neighborhoods of housing in currently underutilized surface parking lots which serve successful commercial shopping centers and big box stores can synergistically improve the American suburb by allowing opportunities to maintain the suburban idea (rugged individualism, privacy, and mobility) while mitigating its problems (automobiles dependence, distance, and isolation)."

Urban Form In Europe And America, Pietro S. Nivola Jan 2010

Urban Form In Europe And America, Pietro S. Nivola

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

Why do America's cities sprawl whereas European cities remain comparatively compact, and what difference do the patterns of urban development make? Pietro Nivola, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, addresses these questions. Nivola examines two kinds of determinants of urban form: (1) market forces, including those influenced by geography, demographics, and technological change, and (2) public policies shaping national transportation systems, tax policy, educational institutions, and more. He also discusses the implications of the different cityscapes for energy consumption.

Creating Community: Mixed Use Development In New Bedford, Ma, Matthew J.B. Cate Jan 2010

Creating Community: Mixed Use Development In New Bedford, Ma, Matthew J.B. Cate

Architecture Theses

In creating a new type of community for New Bedford, MA, there was an awareness of both the existing community, context, and people, while realizing a need for change. The design uses the concept of adapting the existing density into two modes. First, merging the existing residential fabric and merging it with a public program including both commercial and retail development. Second, focusing that new typology into a smaller more refi ned space, while creating new public areas for communal enjoyment and development. Creating such an idea of living takes the existing unused exterior spaces allotted to the typical housing …

Adaptive Housing: Transformation And Growth In The Urban Environment, Kevin Mowatt Jan 2010

Adaptive Housing: Transformation And Growth In The Urban Environment, Kevin Mowatt

Architecture Theses

The proposal for an adaptive housing project and its chosen location arose from two obstacles that all modern cities and the world as a whole, face. The urban environment is revered for its cultural amalgam of people and wide range of demographics; however with this density and diversity comes a shortage of one type or another of commodious housing. Additionally and consequentially, the city must expand and build new buildings, leaving older, unsuitable building vacant. An adaptive architecture would allow families to grow and demographics to shift within the established community, all the while reinvigorating that second obstacle the city …

Abstract
In this paper it is intended to place the recent experience of the Irish housing market in the context of economic and property market cycles, how these interact over a property cycle and lessons from recent policy experience including interventions in the housing area. In spatial terms the current
housing market can be seen as the result of an ad-hoc development led urban growth pattern which contributed to a dispersed development pattern with problems in oversupply. It is clear that alternative options exist to this approach and that evidence based management systems in terms of planning, development and financial …
