1982.2 - Housing Arlington, Martin Price, Randol Byrd, Kevin Crumpler
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1982 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Housing. Randol Byrd and Kevin Crumpler. The Arlington housing project is an urban model which creates lyrical form by subtracting volumes of space from an overall sloping roof plane. It is making "hollow in bump." The diagonal line creates a basic order of form in this multi-unit project. Subtle folds of the sloping roof, together with the bending of walls, create a natural, meandering rhythmic order. Stepped windows intersect stepped solid areas below the windows, to form a yin-yang relationship.

"A new structure has recently been erected in the Providence downtown, and criticisms of the building's design continue to fly. An editorial in these newspapers, for example, referred to the 'failed example of quickie construction with a outsized Erector set.'"

Henry Ford And Field And Factory: An Analysis Of The Ford Sponsored Village Industries - Experiment In Michigan, 1918-1941, John R. Mullin
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series
Between 1916 and 1941, Henry Ford embarked on an effort to decentralize the production facilities of the Ford Motor Company. One component of this effort was an experiment in which he located seventeen small factories, called Village Industries, in rural areas throughout southeastern Michigan. These factories were designed to utilize water power in the production of sub-assembly parts for Ford's main assembly plants and were intended to provide jobs for rural residents. Ford endeavored to develop a sense of "field and factory" in these plants by training rural workers in the latest technological advances, allowing them release time to farm …

Architecture Thesis Prep
"Based on (the) analysis, I intend to design a new library building on the Hartford site acquired by the University of Connecticut. My plans incluse a structure which will consider the scale, color, and texture of the surrounding buildings. Furthermore, this structure will have ample storage for present and future law school collections, library administrative office and student and faculty facilities. In addition, I will also take into account the fact that much of the research and location of materials in the library is conducted by a computer."

Architecture Senior Theses
"The basic premise underlying this thesis is my conviction that we have lost sight of the traditional relationship of architecture and the city. The cause of this loss is obvious when we compare cities of the past with those of the present. Urban spaces have become more and more abstract and less articulate. The prevalence of the parts over the whole has reulted in the weakening of the urban spatial structure."

Energy-Efficient Clothing, Interior Architecture And Furnishing Designs: Consumer Attitudes, Acceptability Levels And Preferences, Barbara Parks
Energy-Efficient Clothing, Interior Architecture And Furnishing Designs: Consumer Attitudes, Acceptability Levels And Preferences, Barbara Parks
Home Economics and Family Living Theses
Energy-efficient designs in clothing, interior architecture and furnishings were evaluated (a) to assess consumers’ attitudes toward the designs, (b) to compare acceptability levels of participants who were knowledgeable in the home energy field with those who were less knowledgeable and (c) to determine if consumers had a preference for using housing, clothing or furnishings in meeting their thermal comfort needs. Four designs generated by the University of Tennessee-Energy Design competition were evaluated: a leisure outfit, a lounging dress, a water-storage collector (room divider and coffee tables) and a solar waterbed. Rogers and Shoemaker’s perceived attributes of innovations model (relative advantage, …

Planning For Reservoir Shoreline Development In Nebraska, Thomas Victor Cech
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
Comprehensive second home development controls for reservoir shoreline areas in Nebraska do not exist at the state level, and regulations at the local level have often been created after problems have become critical.In addition, many existing local controls on shoreline residential development are not strictly enforced. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis was to:
-
Identify the extent and potential demand of second home development near Nebraska’s reservoirs;
-
Identify existing environmental and land use problems associated with such development;
-
Identify shoreline development regulations which exist at the federal, state, and local level which affect residential development in Nebraska;
-
Identify existing problems …

Architecture Beneath The Surface, Grace Anderson
About the Buildings
Confronted by the need to expand its library, the law school at the University of Michigan and its architect, Gunnar Birkerts, decided to go underground. The decision followed a precedent set by some other universities that, like Michigan, wanted to preserve open space above ground. Early efforts to raise a building on this site were rejected, Birkerts reports, when it became evident that such a structure would hide the Gothic presence of the existing library and impede visual and pedestrian access to the cherished Law Quadrangle formed by the older library and dormitories. Birkerts seized the underground assignment as a …
