Linking Effective Whole Life Cycle Cost Data To Parametric Building Information Models Using Bim Technologies, Dermot Kehily, Trevor Woods, Fiacra P. Mcdonnell

Conference papers

Abstract ̶ This paper demonstrates the capabilities of BIM (Building Information Modeling) in leveraging Whole Life Cycle Cost (WLCC) data requirements to perform WLCC calculations and produce WLLC estimates. The research determines the extent to which WLCC data, such as time, interest rates, escalation rates and real costs can be attached to parametric BIM data to be used effectively to create speedier and more accurate real-time WLLC analysis. Without incorporating WLCC data in the BIM, a complete picture of a construction project’s WLCC cannot be formed from the default outputs of the model. BIM 5D applications such as CostX utilise …

Wood Unscripted Potentials:How Can Material Deficiencies Become Strengths, Marcin Wójcik Oct 2013

Wood Unscripted Potentials:How Can Material Deficiencies Become Strengths, Marcin Wójcik

Conference papers

This paper presentation investigates how wood traits that are seen as shortcomings for construction can be used to advantage and what kind of design methods and techniques that would require.

Wood has lost market shares as a raw material for mass production processes as a result of its individualised characteristics and difficult to predict behaviours. Reaction wood, spiral grain and juvenile wood – present in almost all timbers -- are seen as deficiencies, causing lower strength and extensive warp during drying. It is proposed to look for design methods and, techniques that utilise material information, such as the individual traits, …

Developing A Standard Approach To The Value Engineering Process For The Civil Engineering Industry: A Theoretical, Case Study And Industry Perspective., Charles Anthony Mitchell Apr 2013

Developing A Standard Approach To The Value Engineering Process For The Civil Engineering Industry: A Theoretical, Case Study And Industry Perspective., Charles Anthony Mitchell

Conference papers

The original Value Engineering process developed in North America in the late 1940‟s, was primarily based on functional analysis. However; the North American Value Engineering process was not adopted in Europe. Instead various mixed methods were assembled under the umbrella term of Value Management. Nowadays there is much debate about what Value Engineering is and how is it defined? This question arises in part due to there being no standard approach in Europe as a whole in undertaking ValueManagement or Value Engineering exercises. With this in mind, Masters level research was undertaken from three perspectives (theory, case study and industry). The …

Managing Moisture - The Key To Healthy Internal Wall Insulation Retrofits Of Solid Walls, Joseph Little, Benat Arregi Apr 2013

Managing Moisture - The Key To Healthy Internal Wall Insulation Retrofits Of Solid Walls, Joseph Little, Benat Arregi

Conference papers

This study investigates the appropriateness of internally insulating solid walls to the Passivhaus standard. A number of variables are assessed using numerical hygrothermal simulation (under EN 15026) to check (1) associated risk of mould growth on original substrate and (2) if they result in a greater likelihood of timber decay at built-in joist ends. While air and vapour control layers (AVCLs) perform well regarding mould risk in low absorption walls, the results question their appropriateness where joist ends are built-in: when AVCLs are used, moisture levels at joist ends can potentially rise above critical thresholds, even in low absorption walls. …

Neutra's Pedagogic Designs, Sarah Sheridan Jan 2013

Neutra's Pedagogic Designs, Sarah Sheridan

Conference papers

Richard J. Neutra’s seminal model schools are generally disregarded in critical literature, yet the underlying preoccupations were significant. Based on exploration of contemporary themes in medicine, education and architecture, one favoured preoccupation of Neutra’s is nature. He concludes that its potency is manifold, suggesting that exposing children to nature in an experiential way could contribute to their health, well-being and education. His model school design became the idea manifest, placing particular responsibilities on the form to achieve these ideals. However interrogation of Neutra’s forms in context reveals a lingering sense that the ideals are not always achieved. Neutra suggests particular …

Using Architecture Pedagogy To Enhance Engineering Education, Shannon Chance, Mike Murphy, Gavin Duffy, Brian Bowe Jan 2013

Using Architecture Pedagogy To Enhance Engineering Education, Shannon Chance, Mike Murphy, Gavin Duffy, Brian Bowe

Conference papers

Based on evidence, numerous advisory boards and scholars insist engineering education must change (NSB, 2007; McKenna, Froyd, King, Litzinger, & Seymour, 2011) and that hands-on, inquiry-driven, project-based learning pedagogies can enhance STEM education (Boyer & Mitgang, 1996). These pedagogies have formed the core of architectural education since the Renaissance and have been in continuous use since that time. As such, engineering educators can benefit from observing how architecture students learn and understanding how they are taught. Likewise, architecture can benefit from applying the group-based learning strategies employed by engineering teachers who use studentcentered, project-based pedagogies. Trans-disciplinary approaches hold particular merit.

Fm, Risk And Climate Change Adaptation, Keith Jones, Mark Mulville, Adele Brooks Jan 2013

Fm, Risk And Climate Change Adaptation, Keith Jones, Mark Mulville, Adele Brooks

Conference papers

Improving the sustainability of built assets in the light of uncertain futures is a major challenge facing the Facilities Management profession. A changing climate poses significant challenges to the performance of built assets in-use and could potentially render many built assets prematurely obsolete. How business clients plan for such changes formed the focus of a research project undertaken by the authors. This paper presents the findings of a 12 month Action Research project that sought to identify the impact of future climate change on the performance of a new £75m education building over the first 60 years of operation. The …
