This Project Compendium contains information and products resulting from a multi-year cooperative effort between the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Las Vegas Field Office and University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) to care for and make available a BLM-owned Southern Nevada historic property: Walking Box Ranch. This project was focused, primarily, on the custodianship of the site through UNLV’s design, management, and coordination of a resident caretaker program, which was carried out by a series of excellent volunteers. This Project Compendium contains products resulting from a multi-year cooperative effort between the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Las Vegas Field Office and University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Between 2008 and 2013, the BLM and UNLV Public Lands Institute continued their endeavors to preserve Walking Box Ranch and utilize its vast historic and scientific resources for education, research, and training. Cultural Site Stewardship Program

Southern Nevada Agency Partnership, Cultural Site Stewardship Program – Steward Retention and Program Transfer is a Round 11 Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA)-funded project implemented by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Public Lands Institute on behalf of and in cooperation with four Federal agencies. This project resulted in the retention of community members to serve as a voluntary workforce to regularly monitor assigned cultural sites on federal public lands in Clark County, Nevada, and the transfer of the Cultural Site Stewardship Program (CSSP) to the Nevada State Historical Preservation Office.

• UNLV provides stewardship of Walking Box Ranch (WBR) by providing a caretaker who oversees the property, facilitating use of the property by researchers and educators, developing a use and research policy for the property, and coordinating these activities with BLM and in accordance with TNC restrictions.
• UNLV currently addresses security issues for the property through the presence of the caretaker and two Metro Officers who reside on the property in two recreational vehicles.
• UNLV continues to work with BLM, supplying content for interpretation at the future Walking Box Ranch museum.

• BLM notified UNLV on Nov 7, 2012 that they had cancelled the WBR solicitation for a general contractor and that they were reconsidering the scope of the project. BLM and UNLV met on Nov. 22, 2012 and BLM updated UNLV on their decision to terminate the task agreement for the field and research station, and to modify plans for interpretation at the future WBR Visitor Center. BLM and UNLV will meet Feb. 7, 2013 to discuss the path forward regarding interpretation and the Visitor’s Center.
