The Future Of Northeast Ohio's Airports: Framing The Coming Debate, Edward W. Hill

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

The solution to expanding the capacity of air service in Northeast Ohio lies in finding a regional answer to capacity constraints by developing coordinated niches for several of the region’s airports.

Life-Cycle Cost Design Of Deteriorating Structure, Dan M. Frangopol, Kai-Yung Lin, Allen C. Estes Oct 1997

Life-Cycle Cost Design Of Deteriorating Structure, Dan M. Frangopol, Kai-Yung Lin, Allen C. Estes

Architectural Engineering

A lifetime optimization methodology for planning the inspection and repair of structures that deteriorate over time is introduced and illustrated through numerical examples. The optimization is based on minimizing the expected total life-cycle cost while maintaining an allowable lifetime reliability for the structure. This method incorporates: (a) the quality of inspection techniques with different detection capabilities; (b) all repair possibilities based on an event tree; (c) the effects of aging, deterioration, and subsequent repair on structural reliability; and (d) the time value of money. The overall cost to be minimized includes the initial cost and the costs of preventive maintenance, …

Lifetime Bridge Maintenance Strategies Based On System Reliability, Dan M. Frangopol, Allen C. Estes Aug 1997

Lifetime Bridge Maintenance Strategies Based On System Reliability, Dan M. Frangopol, Allen C. Estes

Architectural Engineering

This study proposes a methodology for a system reliability-based condition evaluation of existing highway bridges. The approach is illustrated for an existing steel bridge located in Colorado. USA. An optimum lifetime repair strategy based on minimum expected cost is developed. The initial optimum repair strategy is updated using both biennial visual inspections and specific non-destructive evaluation testing.

Passing Through: An Enquiry Into Boundaries, Benjamin Pell May 1997

Passing Through: An Enquiry Into Boundaries, Benjamin Pell

Architecture Thesis Prep

"This thesis is intended as an enquiry into the origins of discipline and its subsequent representations through the twentieth century. This proect will examine issues of surveilance and control, coundary and institutions, as a contemporary critique of nineteenth century practices of formation and re-formation. Furthermore, the investigation will examine the evolution of institutional confinement, and propose a re-sacrilization of punishment through rituals of discipline.

Sensitive Urban Mass, Thomas Zoli May 1997

Sensitive Urban Mass, Thomas Zoli

Architecture Senior Theses

Even with little remaining industrial presence in Amsterdam, NY the relics of industrial prosperity still hold an important urban identity. They represent the city as it was originally designed. I propose that by reprogramming a large section of integrated, industrial urban fabric, it is possible for the city to reclaim its identity and grow. Most early American industrial architecture is inherently urban. only later when planning boards purged industry from the city center because of the side effects if an industrial core, did the evolution on the industrial satellite city emerge. The mill (grist, textile, powder, etc.) was the urban …

Uptake And Metabolism Of Atrazine By Poplar Trees, Joel Gerard Burken, Jerald L. Schnoor May 1997

Uptake And Metabolism Of Atrazine By Poplar Trees, Joel Gerard Burken, Jerald L. Schnoor

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Hybrid Poplar Trees Can Uptake, Hydrolyze, and Dealkylate Atrazine to Less Toxic Metabolites. in Whole Plant Studies, the Parent Compound Atrazine and 14C Ring-Labeled Metabolites Were Extracted from Poplar Tissues and Analyzed Via High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with UV and Radiochromatographic Detectors in Series. the Concurrent Separation and Identification of These Metabolites Has Not Been Previously Reported in Higher Plants for Phytoremediation Applications. Unidentified Metabolites Were Also Detected. Metabolism of Atrazine Occurred in Poplar Roots, Stems, and Leaves and Became More Complete with Increased Residence Time in Tissues. in Poplar Cuttings Exposed to Atrazine for 50 Days, the Parent Compound …

Sustainable Community Planning: Lessons From The Netherlands, Margot Mcdonald Apr 1997

Sustainable Community Planning: Lessons From The Netherlands, Margot Mcdonald

Architecture

In 1990, the Dutch Government adopted a national plan to develop integrated and comprehensive policies that would respond on a national, regional, and local level to the need for improved environmental quality for the welfare of current and future generations. The program, called the National Environmental Policy Plan (NEPP), represented a bold effort to develop cooperation and shared responsibility between the public and private sectors setting goals for reduced energy consumption, resource utilization, and improved environmental quality including the reduction of SO2, NOx, and CO2 emissions. This paper reports on key elements of the NEPP …

Assessing The Future Of The New England Mill Town: What Are The Key Factors That Lead To Successful Revitalization?, John Mullin, Zenia Kotval Apr 1997

Assessing The Future Of The New England Mill Town: What Are The Key Factors That Lead To Successful Revitalization?, John Mullin, Zenia Kotval

Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series

Over the past twenty years, we have been involved in economic revitalization projects in more than 50 mill towns across the state of Massachusetts. We begin these projects with a quiet visit to each community.

Moving off a state or interstate road, we meander down through a highly dense village of multiunit tenements. Built close to the road, they are always a decided mix of well-kept and decaying structures. They are rarely one or the other entirely. It is as if the residents and owners are undecided about reinvestment or commitment to the community.

A Diamond In The Square, Christopher Guido

Architecture Thesis Prep

"When a traditional city element moves to the suburbs, it is detrimental to the element and to the city. The reinsertion of a separated city element into an urban situation, through the reestablishment of its physics, economic, and social relationship to the city, can serve to benefit the newly placed element and its context."

Reliability Of Reinforced Concrete Girders Under Corrosion Attack, Dan M. Frangopol, Kai-Yung Lin, Allen C. Estes Mar 1997

Reliability Of Reinforced Concrete Girders Under Corrosion Attack, Dan M. Frangopol, Kai-Yung Lin, Allen C. Estes

Architectural Engineering

Corrosion of reinforcement is a major problem affecting a large number of reinforced concrete structures. At present, most reliability-based design studies of reinforced concrete structures do not consider the effects of corrosion. In this paper, we present a reliability-based approach to the design of reinforced concrete bridge girders that are under corrosion attack. Both reserve and residual reliability constraints are satisfied. The approach is based on the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) standard specifications for highway bridges and on data of chloride corrosion of steel in concrete. First, the effects of corrosion on both moment and …

The Revitalization Of The Morningside Neighborhood, Center For Economic Development

Center for Economic Development Technical Reports

The purpose of this project was to provide the Morningside Neighborhood Action Council (MNAC) with reuse options for sites within the Morningside Neighborhood. The two connected goals were to develop reuse options for vacant buildings and lots and for the soon to be vacated Berkshire County House of Corrections and Jail.

Methods the studio team employed in this project include literature review, interviews, field work, inventorying and mapping. These methods allowed the studio team to gain a proper understanding of the issues, needs and desires of the neighborhood and to make recommendations based on them.
