A Paradigm For The Construction Of Architectural Narrative, Sarah F. Holmes
A Paradigm For The Construction Of Architectural Narrative, Sarah F. Holmes
Architecture Thesis Prep
How does one develop a relevant architectural narrative within a society that traditionally has been and remains highly pluralistic?
Architectural meaning arises through the dialogue between a physical and a narrative structure.
This proposal concerns the inquiry into the physical and metaphysical structure of space. In this thesis I propose a system of analysis resulting in the creation of structure from which an architectural narrative may be revealed. Traditional (scientific) methods of analysis examine physical phenomena which organize and create the conceptual structure of the environment. I propose that the narrative structure, that is, the metaphysical structure, is equally valuable …

Reading And Composition: An Exploration Into The Nature Of An Architectural Language, Alexander K. Wing
Architecture Senior Theses
'This thesis proposes that a legible and complete language of architecture in an industrial society may be arrived at through the creation and use of a mass produced kit of parts. It sets out to prove the viability of such work by inventing and adapting a standardized kit to several versions of a library program on separate sites in Syracuse, NY."

Expanding The Boundaries Of Architectural Education: Making A Path To Sustainable Communities, Margot Mcdonald
Expanding The Boundaries Of Architectural Education: Making A Path To Sustainable Communities, Margot Mcdonald
Architecture
Architectural education offers students practice with complex problem-solving, most often separate from the public they will eventually serve. Design education that addresses real clients and real world concerns such as renewable energy and resources, social equity and environmental justice, and economic feasibility demands the skills of coordination, communication, vision, and leadership different from conventional architectural education. This paper outlines an innovative university curriculum that moves in the direction of educating architects as community leaders based on sustainable design and the concept of community in every aspect of the teaching model. Specifically, the teaching model creates an interactive group dynamic in …

Benefits Of Community: Housing For People Living With Aids, Paul R. Coffman
Benefits Of Community: Housing For People Living With Aids, Paul R. Coffman
Architecture Thesis Prep
"The notion of a beneficial community is the primary concern in the creation of a program to provide housing and health care for people with AIDS (PWA). The program will provide long term housing for PWA as well as hospice care during the time of their dying.
Given the fact that the disease strikes without prejudice at all levels of society, not discriminating upon race, age or gender and that the victims tend to be concentrated within dense urban condition, the program will be located in a mixed socio-economic, residential, urban neighborhood: Boston's South End."

On Memory And Architecture, Stacey Hopkins
On Memory And Architecture, Stacey Hopkins
Architecture Thesis Prep
"The symbiotic relationship between architecture and memory is forged in each one's appropriation of the other to make connection in space and time; the fragmentation between present and past disappears as one place, through imagery, unites with another. Memory and architecture relate to one another in that they use man's perception of and empathy with imagery to recall particulars of place, the connection of one place to others, and the way that these connections might explain time in tangible terms. For memory, architecture symbolizes a point of reference in time - a proscenium against which experience can be recalled; in …

Architecture Thesis Prep
"The primary goal of this thesis is to investigate and test hoe an architectural intervention in a historical site will set a direction for future development of an urban fabric. The urban architectural intervention will be in a form of a modern building project, which shares a dialogue with the history and which will be based on the analysis of historical and contemporary precedents. Tha ability of the architectural intervention to express a regional and universal identity is the motivating concern. The following architectural issues will be addressed: Context, Process, Scale and Image."

Creating A Strong Image For The Economic Enhancement Of Downtown Ayer, Center For Economic Development
Center for Economic Development Technical Reports
The recent closure of Fort Devens has had an undeniable impact on business in downtown Ayer, Massachusetts, deflating both the town's population level and its economy. Downtown business in Ayer has traditionally served several surrounding communities, and it is fundamental to the survival of Ayer' s economy that this business continue to thrive. Facing a future that will lack the economic boost formerly associated with Fort activity, business owners and the town must make a greater effort to attract downtown commerce. Final Report On The Measurable Indicators Of Economic Success, Center For Economic Development
Center for Economic Development Technical Reports
Across the United States of America people are increasingly interested in ensuring that government expenditures are well spent. We can note this interest at all levels of government ranging from local to national scales. Indeed, increased accountability is a paramount theme of the new Congress. As well, in all of its manifestations, it is a critical element of the "quality movement" that is becoming acculturated in both the private and public sectors.
The notion of accountability implies measurement: In exchange for public tax dollars allocated, increased value will be gained. All government organizations know this intuitively. Yet, few government organizations …

Economic Development Strategies For The Urban Core Cities Of The Pioneer Valley Region Of Massachusetts, Center For Economic Development
Center for Economic Development Technical Reports
This report presents a series of initial strategy recommendations for the economic development of the cities of Springfield and Holyoke. There are six cities in the Pioneer Valley: Springfield, Holyoke, Chicopee, Westfield, Northampton, and Agawam. The three contiguous cities of Springfield, Holyoke, and Chicopee form the urban core of the region. Historically, these cities have been the cultural. financial, and industrial centers of the Pioneer Valley. This report presents a series of marketing and economic development strategies for the central business district in Chicopee Center known as the Market Square area. The City of Chicopee, along with the cities of Holyoke and Springfield, is part of the urban center of the Pioneer Valley region. Like many older industrial cities, and like many cities with a small downtown area, Chicopee finds its economic fortunes at an ebb. Although Chicopee is certainly not a city in distress, it is believed that steps should be taken to ensure that the Market Square area does not slip into serious decline. …
