Increasing Efficiency In 5d Bim By Utilising ‘Bim Interoperability Tools – Classification Manager’ To Append Icms Cost Codes, Dermot Kehily, Charles Anthony Mitchell

Conference papers

Abstract ̶ This paper discusses Building Information Modelling (BIM), notably the 5th Dimension of BIM, which covers cost management functionality in the BIM workflow. The research proposes an efficient digitised workflow that can facilitate the appendage of an International Quantity Surveying (QS) Cost Code to a consistent parameter in the objects of the model. This paper firstly outlines how QSs are currently inserting ‘user defined’ information by adding their cost Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) to an existing parameter, such as the ‘keynote’ or ‘assembly code’. The QS also has the ability to create a QS specific parameter (QS IDentification), by …

Developing A Standard Approach To The Value Engineering Process For The Civil Engineering Industry: A Theoretical, Case Study And Industry Perspective., Charles Anthony Mitchell

Conference papers

The original Value Engineering process developed in North America in the late 1940‟s, was primarily based on functional analysis. However; the North American Value Engineering process was not adopted in Europe. Instead various mixed methods were assembled under the umbrella term of Value Management. Nowadays there is much debate about what Value Engineering is and how is it defined? This question arises in part due to there being no standard approach in Europe as a whole in undertaking ValueManagement or Value Engineering exercises. With this in mind, Masters level research was undertaken from three perspectives (theory, case study and industry). The …

The Use Of Internships As A Work Placement Option On Quantity Surveying Courses In Light Of The Current Economic Downturn In The Irish Construction Industry, Fiacra P. Mcdonnell

Other Resources

This research examines the concept of internships as a Work Placement option on undergraduate Quantity Surveying courses in light of the economic climate that prevails in Ireland at present. The Irish Construction Industry has experienced unprecedented decline over the last six years, with reduced employment prospects as a result. Graduates on construction related courses are having difficulties sourcing employment, and many feel that they are disadvantaged if they have not experienced work placement as part of their undergraduate course. The benefits of work placement as a mode of learning have been well documented, however this study explores work placement on …

Encouraging Attendence In Tutorials For Quantity Surveying Studies Through Assessment, Dermot Kehily Jul 2011

Encouraging Attendence In Tutorials For Quantity Surveying Studies Through Assessment, Dermot Kehily

Conference papers

Construction Economics and Management in Technological University of Dublin (DIT) educates and prepares students to become Quantity Surveyors (Construction Economists) in the Construction Industry. Arguably the most important subject on the course and the cornerstone of the profession is the ability of the students and graduates to carry out a technical function called ‘measurement’ or ‘take off’ from construction plans and drawings. Graduates of Construction Economics and Management may spend up to two years carrying out measurement for their employers before they progress to the more professional practices of Quantity Surveying. The importance of measurement and take off inthe profession …
