1815 Log House: Interpretive Manual, Timothy Mullin

Library Presentations, Lectures, Research Guides

It is important to understand the different types of house museums and their purposes before we offer information about our own house museum.

There are three basic types of house museums: Documentary, Representative, Decorative. Each type has its purpose and distinct interpretive thrust.

Having very little information about the Felts family, it is impossible to present our museum as the documentary Felts House. A much more realistic interpretive goal is as a representative 1815 Log House. We have used what little bits of information we have about the Felts family, and the rest of our interpretation is taken from the ...

Making Marfa: Technical Encumbrances And Creative Resistance In Donald Judd’S Ten(?) Concrete Buildings, Rob Whitehead Oct 2009

Making Marfa: Technical Encumbrances And Creative Resistance In Donald Judd’S Ten(?) Concrete Buildings, Rob Whitehead

Architecture Conference Proceedings and Presentations

On an elevated plinth of west Texas prairie grass land, in a visually isolated corner of the Chinati Foundation grounds, sit two unfinished examples of Donald Judd’s final experiment in uniting art, architecture and nature. These imaginative and enigmatic concrete building shells have the same spare material expression, rigid proportioning system and the unnerving structural thinness that one would expect from Judd’s three-dimensional work. These buildings are part of a larger geometrically ordered complex of ten buildings designed specifically to house twelve works of art, unsurprisingly, also created by Donald Judd.

DLSC Faculty and Staff Publications

* The du Pont family is large, and recurring names and nicknames often make it difficult to follow who’s who. The Lammot family is woven together with the du Pont family in a complicated thread, especially since Margaretta was a favorite name. Adding the Coleman/Moxham family only makes the complicated spider’s web of family relationships that much more difficult. For this purpose selected family trees are included as appendices.

Transdisciplinary Teams And Aging In Place Design : The Interior Designer's Role, Liliana Alicia Custy

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined factors influencing participatory research team effectiveness in aging in place (AIP) design (Stokols, et al„, 2008). Although research on AIP design characterizes AIP as collaborative process, there are few studies on the factors that affect collaboration in participatory research applied to AIP. This study used a qualitative narrative strategy in a multiple case-study analysis conducted from a transdisciplinary research (TR) perspective. The case-study focused on the factors that enhanced and constrained Open n Prototype Initiative (OPI) team effectiveness.

TR is a precise type of teamwork of integrative endeavors, focused on the science and society interface, and aimed ...

Full list of publications from School of Architecture

Author links Oppenord's 'revivalist' attitude to the politics of his patron, Philippe II, duc d'Orleans, regent of France between 1715 and 1723. The author uses eight drawings by Oppenord, acquired by the Carnavalet in 1999, as well as others known, to show how the Palais-Royal and its apartments were transformed to be a surrogate Versailles. Includes a checklist of drawings and prints by and after Oppenord for the Palais-Royal (1713-1723).

Atlanta: A Morphological History, Dawn Haynie, John Peponis

Art and Design Faculty Publications

In this paper we report an analysis of 118 urban areas sampled from the 12 largest metropolitan regions in the US. We deal with familiar measures of block size, street density, intersection density and distance between intersections. We also introduce two new variables, Reach and Directional Distance. Reach is the aggregate street length that can be accessed from the midpoint of each road segment subject to a limitation of distance. Directional distance is the average number of direction changes needed in order to access all the spaces within reach. We provide parametric definitions of these variables and implement their computation ...

Stress, Status, And Sociability: Exploring Residential Satisfaction In The Rural Midwest Following Rapid Immigration, James Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero, Amy E. Boren

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

This investigation examined predictors of residential satisfaction among newly arrived residents (NAR) and long-term residents (LTR) of a rural community following a rapid influx of immigrants into the community. The physical environment, social/cultural aspects of life, and resources and public services were hypothesized to affect perceptions of residential satisfaction. Both LTR and NAR were pleased with environmental attributes, sociocultural attributes, and public services. An inverse relationship was revealed between stress and residential satisfaction. The primary sources of stress for LTR related to economics and social status issues, whereas the primary sources of stress among NAR involved issues concerning family ...
