Many tourist brochures carry the message "see it before it is spoilt" (Selwyn, 1996). Some reports suggest that the global expansion of the tourism industry consists of a process of discovering "unspoilt" places, exploiting them until they are "spoilt", and then moving on to develop a seemingly endless supply of "unspoilt" and "pristine" places (Turner and Ash, 1975; Selwyn, 1996).
