Clt Shearwall Dovetail Connection, Alexander Eduardo Esser, August Messano
Clt Shearwall Dovetail Connection, Alexander Eduardo Esser, August Messano
Architectural Engineering
As cross-laminated timber has become an increasingly popular construction material, its use as a shear wall element has also demanded attention. Primary obstructions to the use of CLT shear walls have been the lack of an economic connection type that does not compromise the structural integrity and has the robustness that CLT shear wall panels deserve. Dovetail connections provide a great option for the connection of CLT shear walls. With more experimentation, the optimal dovetail geometry can be further developed. The small-scale testing done in conjunction with this report proved that very deep pins and tails will result in bearing …

Tanzanian Cement Block, Emmanuel Castano-Bonilla, Leah Holleran, Kristy Sanchez
Architectural Engineering
The construction plans for a polytechnic college are being developed in the town of Same, Tanzania, Africa. This project is sponsored by the Mbesese Initiative for Sustainable Design (MISD), a non-profit that has partnered with design firms such as ARUP and KLA architects to complete the work. Considering that the site is located in rural Tanzania, material availability is limited. A local block maker produces a mechanically pressed brick that consists solely of sand, cement and water. The bricks are unconventional when compared to those made in the United States. The purpose of this study is to understand the block …

Architectural Engineering
ARCE 401 Fire Protection is a class that will finally give ARCE students an introduction to fire-resilience and its major importance in the structural and planning spheres. The class would have a structural emphasis along with interdisciplinary qualities, unlike the graduate classes offered in the CE and ME departments. ARCE 401 covers a broad spectrum of topics and is meant to bring ARCE students closer to a comprehensive understanding of the overall work environment.

Journeyman International is a non-profit company that coordinates the design and construction of humanitarian projects between architecture, architectural engineering, and construction management students in order to build impactful projects in developing nations at a minimal cost. One of these projects is Kwitunga: a Women’s Cooperative and Opportunity Center in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. This project consists of four buildings that create a space for women to design, create, and sell clothing items, harvest tropical fruits, socialize, and provide a safe space for their children. The project team consists of four students from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis …
Poly Canyon Entryway Redesign, Antonio Emiliano Baldazo
Poly Canyon Entryway Redesign, Antonio Emiliano Baldazo
Architectural Engineering
Persistence of Vision investigates the relationship between past, present, and future perceptions of place in the Poly Canyon area. Persistence of Vision takes up the Cal Poly mantra of “learn by doing,” and explores its pedagogical value by engaging with theory, design, engineering and implementation. This project is manifest in the form of a series of signs in the so-called “architectural graveyard” area; with an eye towards changing the name, perceptions, and narratives about this place. This project hopes to create a recognition within the minds of students that this place is, and was intended to be, a place for …

Structural Calculations For A Medical Clinic In The Dominican Republic With Mission Twentyfive35, Erica Marie Croft, Thomas H. Sidebottom
Architectural Engineering
Located in the northern region of the Dominican Republic, Rural Resilience is a clinic situated on a vocational campus in the rural town of Via Tapia. In collaboration with the Amoveo Group, Mission TwentyFive35 initiated the design and construction of this vocational campus to address the community’s limited access to healthcare and education, clean water, food, and the lack of vocational job training. Planned to be completed in several phases, this campus aims as a means to solve these shortcomings. This project provides the structural calculations and drawings for the clinic within Mission TwentyFive35’s campus. In coordination with the non …

Modular House Restoration, Abby M. Lentz, Michael L. Blanchard
Architectural Engineering
The aim of this senior project is to help restore the vitality of Poly Canyon by continuing the renovation of the Modular House. The Modular house was originally built in 1969 as living quarters for caretakers of Poly Canyon. The two-story structure was built as a series of 8 foot (ft.) by 8 ft. wall, floor and ceiling frames in a 2x3 bay floor plan. The 8 ft squares were filled with 2 standard sized 4 ft. by 8 ft. plywood sheets. Since its original construction, triangular expansions have been added to the floor plan of the original layout. Also, …

Hands-On Activities To Increase Student Engagement In Undergraduate Structural Dynamics Course, Chad D. Facciolo, Anahid A. Behrouzi
Architectural Engineering
This report documents the design and implementation of several physical models and hands-on lab activities incorporated in an undergraduate structural dynamics lecture and laboratory course pairing offered at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in the Architectural Engineering department during the Winter 2018 quarter. In previous quarters, the laboratory course has lacked opportunities for students to conduct their own physical experiments and has consisted primarily of MATLAB programming activities. Efforts to illustrate the dynamic behavior of various structures have primarily involved instructor demonstrations or online videos.
The addition of physical models in the Winter 2018 offering promotes an engaging …
