The Rock Houses Of Fredericksburg, Texas 1846-1910, Sylvia Lorraine Rusche Cook

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Fredericksburg, Texas was founded in 1846 by German settlers under the sponsorship of the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas. The Society, composed of a group of German noblemen, was to provide the immigrants with transportation, land, and assistance in making settlements, and the settlers were faced with considerable difficulties after the Society's collapse. The immigrants were primarily farmers and village craftsmen from the central uplands of Germany, a hilly region which bore a striking resemblance to the Fredericksburg area's. But the dissimilarities, the settlement areas' higher, widely fluctuating temperatures, arid its erratic rainfall caused by its …

Architecture/Planning Paradigms: Beyond The Stars, The Wizard Of Oz And The Other, Susan Dreier Dec 1975

Architecture/Planning Paradigms: Beyond The Stars, The Wizard Of Oz And The Other, Susan Dreier

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This thesis describes a process or investigation of the presumptions that structure the attitudes and interactions in the field of architecture/planning. Architecture/planning is described, in relation to defined criteria, as a system which maintains academic and professional hierarchies and white perpetuates itself and its self interests. The resulting definitions of problems, solutions and roles within the field are directly linked to the controlling social, political and economic interests that are the status quo. Certain mechanisms direct and maintain the activities of the field in the process of development. For example, the parameters of the low-income housing problem have been traditionally …

An Interdisciplinary Approach To The Art Experience On An Urban University Central Campus, George Loring Sanders Dec 1975

An Interdisciplinary Approach To The Art Experience On An Urban University Central Campus, George Loring Sanders

Architecture and Planning ETDs

PROBLEM

As an interest in art appreciation by the general population grows it becomes more and more important that display techniques expand tremendously so as to allow the largest diversity of persons possible to participate. The construction of university art museums has been extensive in recent years. However there has been no comprehensive body of work studying the implications of a project designed to totally immerse art experience in the educative process on a university campus. A university campus, by its very nature, is an elite institution. The problem then becomes how to make it less so by visually and …

Planning Paradigms And The Politics Of Experience, James Wilford Siebert Dec 1975

Planning Paradigms And The Politics Of Experience, James Wilford Siebert

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This thesis has evolved as a result of several personal experiences with the practice of planning. These personal experiences preceded the actual writing of the thesis by several months, and provided me with the opportunity to search out literature which helped me to understand and correlate the relationships between the role of planners and the political, social, and economic constraints which impose certain limitations on that role. Rather than beginning with a structured format that comprised an outline of the entire thesis, each chapter builds organically off the preceding chapter, with the linkage often not appearing until the chapter has …

Cooperacion Agraria Y El Mejoramiento Del Sector Campesino Venezolano, Augusto S. Moreno Reyes

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Important changes, which have ocurred in the Venezuelan's class structure have resulted in a significant shift in the balance of political power producing more participation by the people. Today, in an attempt to release the country's economy from foreign domination, the state is taking a series of steps such as : nationalization of raw materials, improvement of human values, agrarian reform etc. Not withstanding, the positive changes undergoing, there exists a privileged minority which has strong economic power (capital, land and commerce). This minority, whose economic interests are usually subordinated to foreign capitalistic organizations has control upon the domestic market …

The Effects Of Windowless Classrooms On The Cognitive And Affective Behavior Of Elementary School Students, Bryan Miles Romney Dec 1975

The Effects Of Windowless Classrooms On The Cognitive And Affective Behavior Of Elementary School Students, Bryan Miles Romney

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Windowless school buildings are currently being proposed as a design solution to the problems of vandalism, energy conservation, and building costs. However, little consideration is being given to the effects of windowless classrooms on the students and teachers inside. The intent of this thesis was to describe the effect of windowless classrooms on three specific areas of cognitive behavior: rote learning, concept formation, and perceptual ability. In addition, a description of student and teacher affective behavior, based on formal observations, was included. Two identical sixth grade classes were selected for this study. The experimental period was divided into two three-week …

Design Recommendations For Tornado-Resistant Buildings, James M. Lisenby Dec 1975

Design Recommendations For Tornado-Resistant Buildings, James M. Lisenby

Architecture and Planning ETDs

A need exists for structures. that are harmonious with nature which are safe for their occupants and also aesthetically pleasing to the senses. To fulfill this need, architects must contend with one of nature's most violent phenomenon, the tornado, which causes the loss of hundreds of lives and millions of dollars in property damage annually. Tornado incidence is less frequent during certain times of the day, months of the year, and different areas of the country, but is an everpresent environmental threat.

Tornadoes cannot be prevented or predicted and even now are not completely understood. The time between the warning …

Evolution Of Open Space Planning In New Towns, Carolyn Revelle Hufbauer Dec 1975

Evolution Of Open Space Planning In New Towns, Carolyn Revelle Hufbauer

Architecture and Planning ETDs

What has determined the open space configuration in twentieth century British and American new town plans? Where is the open space, how is it used, and to what extent have open space and landscape been determinants of urban form? Does open space planning in the twentieth century reflect earlier traditions? These are the questions examined in this thesis.

An introductory chapter surveys traditions of open space planning in urban areas. The body of the thesis is a series of eight case studies, chosen to represent seventy-five years of new town planning. In Britain, the towns are: Letchworth, Welwyn Garden City, …

The Reutilization Of Old Buildings, Kevin S. Munroe May 1975

The Reutilization Of Old Buildings, Kevin S. Munroe

Architecture and Planning ETDs

An active campaign must be waged to save many of the old buildings throughout the country. Not only are the bulldozers and wrecking balls tearing great holes in our past, but they are destroying an extremely valuable natural resource. In city after city, it has been clearly shown that without the efforts of concerned individuals the buildings come down. In recent years the record has become equally clear in regard to the benefits of reutilization. Throughout the country citizens are looking with pride and a sense of rekindled ties with their past at areas that were, but a short while …

The Obsolete Hospital: Raze Or Recycle?, Donna E. Quasthoff May 1975

The Obsolete Hospital: Raze Or Recycle?, Donna E. Quasthoff

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The obsolescence of a hospital is often caused by factors other than structural deterioration. Usually it is because the hospital is outmoded as an efficient medical facility and expansion or remodeling are unfeasible because the hospital is space-locked both exteriorly and interiorly. Or a hospital is sometimes closed because the community is unable to financially support it or obtain the necessary medical staff. New more stringent code regulations are also making it financially impractical for some hospitals to comply. Another factor for closing a hospital can be duplication of services in the same area.

Often, because of these reasons for …

The Concept Of Maximum Learning And How This Concept Can Lead To Achieving Efficiency Of Space In A Secondary School Physical Plant, Case Study: Taos High School, Bashir Ul Haq

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The purpose of this study is to develop an understanding of the concept of maximum learning in secondary school education and how this concept can lead to achieving efficiency of space. The concept of maximum learning is based on the research findings of Educational Facilities Laboratories, Inc. These research findings are based on the concept that maximum learning depends upon the establishment of educational objectives, awareness of the changing nature of educational objectives, and finding more effective ways to achieve the educational objectives. The concept of efficiency of space is based on the maximization of the effective utilization of space …

A Data Base For Simulating Electrical System Growth, Franklin Marshall Fine May 1975

A Data Base For Simulating Electrical System Growth, Franklin Marshall Fine

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The thesis describes and discusses the methodology developed and used by the author for producing an input load data base for the Westinghouse Distribution System Planning Program (DSP), a computer simulation model for planning electrical subtransmission and distribution systems. The Public Service Company of New Mexico's electrical system in Albuquerque is first described as is the DSP model. The methodology used is then discussed: first the estimating procedures for establishing the base year load, and then the techniques used for projecting future load. Possible improvements in these methods are offered and the ultimate limitations of such a data base are …

The Use Of A Sequenced Set Of Photographic Images Of Non-Architect Designed Architecture As A Teaching Tool For Architectural Design, John L. Gould May 1975

The Use Of A Sequenced Set Of Photographic Images Of Non-Architect Designed Architecture As A Teaching Tool For Architectural Design, John L. Gould

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This thesis concerns itself with the use of a sequenced set of photographic images of non-architect designed architecture as a teaching tool for architectural design. Non-architect designed architecture was chosen because frequently this form of architecture exhibits strong architectural design gestures which are not used by architectural professionals. To indicate another set of design referents, other than those used by the professionals, was to show another alternative for learning aspects of architectural design. The first step taken was to photograph in black and white photography forty-nine instances of non-architect designed architecture. Each of these instances has to be a visually …

Housing Program For The City Of Chihuahua, Miguel A. Cheng-Guajardo May 1975

Housing Program For The City Of Chihuahua, Miguel A. Cheng-Guajardo

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This study is made, as a basic function, to better understand Mexico's accelerated urban expansion, where it stands today and where it will be by the year 1980. It also explores the similarity between Mexico and the rest of the Latin American countries.

The high rate of population growth, which in many cities soars as high as 5 to 7 percent per year, points to the need for important institutional and technological reforms in the fields of housing and planning urban growth. If this trend continues, population in the larger urban centers will double every fourteen years. According to the …

An Investigation Of Three-Dimensional Modular Construction And Its Application To Housing, Brady William Roark May 1975

An Investigation Of Three-Dimensional Modular Construction And Its Application To Housing, Brady William Roark

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Many people have failed and many companies have gone bankrupt attempting to apply assembly line methods to the housing industry. A few, for what ever reasons, have been at least partially successful. Seven successful regional manufacturers of modular houses were observed and interviewed in this study to determine how they make their product and the problems involved with this type of construction. The summaries and conclusions of those visits provoke several considerations for designing a regional system. One consideration is incorporating steel as a basic structural material, which leads the investigation to seven modular housing proposals that use steel as …

Cali is confronting several serious problems in accomodating its rapidly growing population. The most critical of these problems is the lack of basic utility service …

The Feasibility Of Developing A Building System For Low Cost Single Family Houses Utilizing Standard Building Components, Jeffrey Thomas Klas Jan 1975

The Feasibility Of Developing A Building System For Low Cost Single Family Houses Utilizing Standard Building Components, Jeffrey Thomas Klas

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The continuing dialogue concerning the development of building systems for housing has produced few results. The economic, political, and technical obstacles encountered are sufficiently prohibitive to discourage new entries in the field. There does exist however an enormous amount of building products that potentially could be assembled to form a building system. Utilizing existing products in this manner could circumvent many problems faced in the development of a system composed of completely custom components. This study addresses itself to determining the feasibility of developing a building system for low cost single family houses using commercially available building products. Such an …

Prestressed Saddle Shaped Tensile Structures, An Analysis, Lorenzo H. Aguilar Melançon

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Problem:

In today's field of architecture, a great deal of emphasis is placed upon the use of new forms and new materials by a great number of architects. Yet the vast majority of these persons are not equipped to carry out this task. It is not that they do not possess the technical knowledge, it is that they do not have the right approach in tackling the problem. This is often the case when dealing with prestressed tensile structures; More specifically, saddle shaped surfaces.

Scope

This project represents an investigation of the structural principles involved in the design of prestressed …
