The Irish Construction Industry’S State Of Readiness For A Bim Mandate In 2020, Barry Mcauley, Alan V. Hore, Roger P. West

Conference papers

It was recently announced that a BIM mandate for the Irish public sector is not imminent, suggesting that the sector is not yet ready for what such a mandate implies. Following on from a forward-looking BIM Roadmap for Ireland in 2017 and the publication by the authors of a detailed BIM in Ireland study in 2017 and 2019, what is the actual state of readiness for a more general BIM mandate in Ireland? This paper will review recent publications, seminars and industry initiatives on this topic of interest supported by an online survey to assess the current state of readiness …

The use of BIM in the Irish construction industry has become pervasive in the last decade and it is an essential element in improving productivity in the market. The developments in BIM education and training in supporting the increase in Ireland’s BIM maturity has been well documented in recent years, principally through the proceedings of the BIM Gatherings and the BIM in Ireland 2017 and 2019 reviews. Similarly, the public and private sectors have been surveyed to establish their readiness for digital transformation on their BIM journey. However, BIM research undertaken by Irish academics, while individually strong, has not been …

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Religion in the Indian context is an inseparable element that dominates Indian lives, culture and psyche wherein significant number of people undertake pilgrimages every year. Pilgrims travel to different religious sites spread throughout the country and an intimate bonding exists between people and religious sites that invariably constitute their heritage. The worship of deities is a significant and popular ancient custom in the history of Indian culture. Pilgrims to any religious heritage site participate in different activities and their involvement in these activities builds their spiritual experience. So, the purpose of this research was to investigate the pilgrims experience at …

Contractor's Claims Under The Riai Form Of Contract - A Lecture Presentation, Tony Cunningham Mar 2020

Contractor's Claims Under The Riai Form Of Contract - A Lecture Presentation, Tony Cunningham

Other Resources

Contractors’ claims for loss and expense have long been a contentious issue on many building contracts. Contractors’ claims for additional money arise where the actions or failings of the Employer and/or its agents delay or disrupt the Contractor’s regular progress of the works and cause the Contractor to suffer unexpected loss and/or expense in performing its contract.

These lecture presentation notes examine the topic of contractors’ claims for reimbursement of loss and expense under the Irish 2017 RIAI ‘Yellow’ Form of Contracts. The presentation outlines the grounds on which a claim for compensation may be made under this contract and …

A Robust Lpc Filtering Method For Time-Resolved Morphology Of Eeg Activity Analysis, Jin Xu, Mark Davis, Ruairí De Fréin Jan 2020

A Robust Lpc Filtering Method For Time-Resolved Morphology Of Eeg Activity Analysis, Jin Xu, Mark Davis, Ruairí De Fréin

Conference Papers

This paper introduces a new time-resolved spectral analysis method based on Linear Prediction Coding (LPC) method that is particularly suited to the study of the dynamics of EEG (Electroencephalogram) activity. The spectral dynamic of EEG signals can be challenging to analyse as they contain multiple frequency components and are often heavily corrupted by noise. Furthermore, the temporal and spectral resolution that can be achieved is limited by the Heisenberg-Gabor uncertainty principle [1]. The method described here is based on a z-plane analysis of the poles of the LPC which allows us to identify and estimate the frequency of the dominant …

Why Are Residential Property Developers In Ireland Not Using Bim?, Bim Tudublin, Simon Burke Jan 2020

Why Are Residential Property Developers In Ireland Not Using Bim?, Bim Tudublin, Simon Burke

Capstone Reports

The aim of this paper is to establish the level of BIM adoption by larger-scale residential property developers in Ireland and investigate the benefits and challenges of implementing BIM for residential housing. While BIM is a relatively new concept in Ireland for housing, developers and investors in larger scale developments are beginning to recognize areas where BIM can add value to their projects. The research also indicates that while there is evidence of successful BIM implementation for housing resulting in savings in cost and time, widespread adoption is hindered by a lack of knowledge and skills, costs of implementation, lack …

A Comparative Study Of Cadworx Plant 2018 And Revit 2020 With Ez-Iso Add-In, For The Production Of Piping Isometrics, Bim Tudublin, Killian Lynch

Capstone Reports

BIM software evaluation and selection is a complex process. In this paper, a comparative study of Revit 2020 with Ez-ISO add-in, and CADWorx Plant 2018, was carried out. The aim of this study was to determine if a MEP contractor could consolidate software usage into one package, thereby reducing costs for pipework modelling and isometric production. A comprehensive evaluation was developed based on a literature review. A multicriteria decision-making method was used in conjunction with the software evaluation to ensure sound choices were made. An online survey of senior BIM professionals was conducted to validate the analysis and findings. The …

A Critical Examination Of The Use Of Business Intelligence (Bi) In The Optioneering Of Generative Design Models: A Case Study., Bim Tudublin, Davitt Lamon

Capstone Reports

This research outlines the development of a generative des ign workflow for the architectural space planning of a 1,200 sq.m office located in Dublin, Ireland, and the application of statistical analysis and data visualisation for the optioneering of gen erated models. First, the paper defines a computational desig n model with the potential to generate a variety of office layouts, including circulation routes and desk locations. It then identifies three unique performance metrics that evaluate each design option. Finally, the study applies a multi objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) to explore the high dimensional design space of all potential options and …

A Critical Appraisal Of Findings And Solutions To Overcome Erroneous Bim Model Production And Information Delivery Workflows, Bim Tudublin, Ryan Forde Jan 2020

A Critical Appraisal Of Findings And Solutions To Overcome Erroneous Bim Model Production And Information Delivery Workflows, Bim Tudublin, Ryan Forde

Capstone Reports

There are many varying definitions of Building Information Modelling, all of which reflect its transformative capabilities and impact on the construction sector. BIM is an emerging technological and procedural shift within the AEC industry (Succar, 2009). BIM is not just a technological change, but also a procedural and workflow change (Charles Eastman, 2018). Despite the growth of BIM adoption and increasing levels of maturity regarding BIM standards, numerous issues still arise at a micro level during project execution. BIM invokes the need for workflows, frameworks and processes that imparts knowledge, heightens trust, increases efficiency and consistency while reducing fragmentation and …

The Magic And Metaphysics Of Shit :The Production Of Space And Digital Technology, David Capener Jan 2020

The Magic And Metaphysics Of Shit :The Production Of Space And Digital Technology, David Capener

Articles

Reading Henri Lefebvre alongside Bernard Stiegler, this paper explores the changes that have taken place to the production of space in our age of digital technology. Lefebvre sensed the radical changes taking place in society through the implementation of computational technologies. He asked a prescient question: How is this space being produced? Lefebvre was unable to foresee the significant changes to the actual mechanics of the production of space brought about by the third industrial revolution. A thinker who does do this is Bernard Stiegler who is interested in how new digital technologies change memory via tertiary mnemotechnical devices – …

The Production Of Space And The Archive Of Everyday Life, David Capener Jan 2020

The Production Of Space And The Archive Of Everyday Life, David Capener

Conference papers

The cloud is a complex material entanglement that moves across multiple scales from the microscopic to the mega-city. The material manifestations of the cloud, like data centers are nodes in an entangled network that cannot be thought apart from the modes of being that they produce. This requires us to think beyond the question — dominant in much architectural discourse — of what it is and ask what does it do? Concerning the cloud these two questions cannot be separated, to ask one is immediately to ask the other. This is the reason why I propose that Lefebvre’s triadic is …
