Reconceptualizing The Urban Artifact, Ricardo Rodriguez Huerta Apr 2019

Reconceptualizing The Urban Artifact, Ricardo Rodriguez Huerta

Architecture Senior Theses

This is a study of the architectural and historical construct of the Urban Artifact. For the purposes of this exploration, an Urban Artifact is to be understood as the physical manifestation of the city and its collective memory. It is the product of the history and character of its place and the embodiment of an idea of its type and the memory of its lineage. In contrast to the fixed intention and permanence of a monument, an Urban Artifact has its own autonomy and value gained over time until it ultimately becomes also identified as a monument. These concepts, defined …

Architecture Thesis Prep

The history of wilderness is the history of an idea. A missing element of the natural history museum is the human attitude within which nature is captured and displayed. This project wants to put the historical displays of the museum within a context by making an addition to the natural history museum that archives the historical attitudes, experiences and perceptions towards wilderness.

Construction For Art, Will Fellis

"When museums draw large crowds and display large collections, there is a lack of personal relationship and understanding of the art.

Small scale museum architecture, in the form of single galleries or pavilions housing only a few pieces by a specific artist or simply expressing the concepts of a certain artist's work, offers and opportunity to create a more intimate relationship between the artwork and the viewer.

The design of a pavilion according to an artist's philosophy will be manifested within the construction. Therefore the detailing of the pavilion will be the point at which the occupant engages the principles …

Refocused Gaze, Gabriel Swire

Architecture Thesis Prep

"How can we study overlapping of space, and even deeper, the interactions that occur in those spaces? View becomes a powerful connection that links spaces and talks about the interaction within a singular space. Gaze, discussed by Lacan and Foucault, creates a basis of exploring possible overlapping of spaces through human interaction. The gaze is a conceptual idea that allows the dissecting of social norms of space to reveal these connections and communications between them.

The objective of a museum is to create an ideal environment for interaction of people and art. the galleries and public spaces are the major …

Perception Potential And The Performance Of Change, Milo Bonacci

"Sustainable architecture should have the ability to evolve as influenced by societal, cultural, environmental, economic, and political factors. By being dynamic and responsive in this sense, an architecture would be able to interact with its environment in similar ways to how a biological organism both influences and is influenced by its ecosystem - maintaining a state of dynamic equilibrium and ultimately being sustained."

Tha ability of the architectural intervention to express a regional and universal identity is the motivating concern. Museum of the Evolution of Iron and Steel - Trenton, New Jersey

"The origins of the word museum stem directly from allusions to the process of death. Similarly the ideas behind historic preservation also find their roots in the saving of a 'dying' artifact. Through the combination of museum and historic ruin this thesis will attempt to bring both the ruin and the artifacts exhibited within the museum back to life. This life will be sustained through the celebration of site, history, and technology, and its overall significance in the development of the community, and its contribution to the world …

59th Street Bridge Museum And Market, Marciano Martin

School of Architecture - All Scholarship

This thesis is to serve as an investigation and response into the architectural issue of scale juxtaposition. In this case the condition which occurs is the result of a modern feat of engineering at one scale, disrupting and imposing itself onto an urban and historical context which is at a more intimate scale. Consequently, there is a loss of identity or spatial relationships in the urban context, which may have existed prior to this modern intervention. It is my goal to take advantage and develop a response to these disparate scales and their images. It is also the opportunity for …
