Eternal Imprint: Two Libraries Linked In Time, Jaifer Sultan Dec 2022

Eternal Imprint: Two Libraries Linked In Time, Jaifer Sultan

Architecture Thesis Prep

The thesis is an exploration of the symbolic relationship between Earth and the Moon through the conceptualization of two libraries, one on Earth and one on the Moon, are to be formally expressed through a mitosis-like interdependency, where both libraries are in constant architectural dialogue with each other despite their separation which occurred some time ago.

The thesis positions itself in the architectural discourse through the rigorous stud and analysis of the library typology throughout history, to both symbolize meaning and ritualize one's experience of acquiring knowledge. This understanding of the library typology will be tackled through the cataloging of …

The New Urban Artifact, Ricardo Rodriguez Huerta Oct 2018

The New Urban Artifact, Ricardo Rodriguez Huerta

Architecture Thesis Prep

This is a study of the architectural and historical construct of the Urban Artifact. For the purposes of this exploration, an Urban Artifact is to be understood as the physical manifestation of the city and its collective memory. It is the product of the history and character of its place and the embodiment of an idea of its type and the memory of its lineage. In contrast to the fixed intention and permanence of a monument, an Urban Artifact has its own autonomy and value gained over time until it ultimately becomes also identified as a monument. These concepts, defined …

Library To Nowhere, Anna Sernicki

Architecture Thesis Prep

Using the metaphor of the pyramid and the labyrinth as a precedent, I am interested in deconstructing existing programmed spaces into the essential spatial qualities of architecture.

Is it possible to question the nature of a space, while at the same time experiencing that space?

Fixed - Flow: The Emergent Library, Laura Elizabeth Swartz

Architecture Thesis Prep

"Traditional academic library have been concerned with physically containing institutional collections. However, today we see a paradigm shift in knowledge transfer, a digital wave sweeping book and periodical collections off the shelves of these centralized containers to offsite storage warehouses...

"The Emergent Library will re-define and activate a current academic library (and the 'Learning Commons') by embracing technology - both physical hardware and digital models (web 2.0 and 3.0) in concept and structure - which allow for the following:

[1] Networked management of perpetual real-time flow of knowledge

[2] User generated experiential spaces

[3] Barrier free access to emergent knowledge …

The Providence Public Library At Waterplace Park: Modifying The Public Library To Engage With The Civic Realm, Nicole Lecuivre

Architecture Thesis Prep

"A new library and park placed into an underdeveloped parcel of urban fabric in Providence, Rhode Island will create a new public architecture that reflects the modification of the public library type and engages the civic realm at a greater capacity. A library that functions through indoor and outdoor space will strengthen future urban development of the city center a well as serving as 'the community living room' and an icon of Providence."

Traces Of Time: Urban Palimpsest And Transformations, Tomas B. Fernandez Oct 2001

Traces Of Time: Urban Palimpsest And Transformations, Tomas B. Fernandez

Architecture Thesis Prep

"I contend that the city is a deeply scored palimpsest that through specific natural, social, and cultural changes reveals its traces of permanence and temporality; therefore, to create in the urban realm is to respond to these vestiges of time through decoding and transformation, as if one was gently manipulating the genome of the city."

Methods Of Perception, Caleb Mitchell Oct 2001

Methods Of Perception, Caleb Mitchell

Architecture Thesis Prep

"Architecture can teach an observer about itself both physically and metaphysically; this can be managed though interactive processes which demand haptic experiences.

(Methodoloy:) To investigate the capacities of mechanistic or interactive devices to reveal meaning (physical and metaphysical); and to eventually develop at full (or large) scale an artifact capable of operating through functional and meaningful interactions with a user."

A Paradigm For The Construction Of Architectural Narrative, Sarah F. Holmes Oct 1996

A Paradigm For The Construction Of Architectural Narrative, Sarah F. Holmes

Architecture Thesis Prep

How does one develop a relevant architectural narrative within a society that traditionally has been and remains highly pluralistic?

Architectural meaning arises through the dialogue between a physical and a narrative structure.

This proposal concerns the inquiry into the physical and metaphysical structure of space. In this thesis I propose a system of analysis resulting in the creation of structure from which an architectural narrative may be revealed. Traditional (scientific) methods of analysis examine physical phenomena which organize and create the conceptual structure of the environment. I propose that the narrative structure, that is, the metaphysical structure, is equally valuable …
