Creating A Religious Properties Database For The City Of New Bedford: An Analysis Of Best Practices And Available Systems, Elizabeth C. Cardarelli

Historic Preservation Capstone Projects

This policy analysis was written to provide the city of New Bedford, the Waterfront Historic Area League, Inter-church Council of Greater New Bedford, and the congregations with possible database systems to consider in creating their historic religious properties database. It also provides the best methodology to use when choosing a database. Deciding on who will be involved in the choosing process, determining a budget, and listing the mandatory requirements the database should provide are all important to consider in the decision making process.

Currently, there are not any fire stations within an appropriate range for development on the Drift Road site. This will make it essential for a proposed development to contain a pond and pump onsite for immediate fire control until further assistance arrives. Should municipal water not be available for residents on this site, private well systems will need to be built on each property, a minimum of 100 feet away from any septic system.

This market essentially combines a marketplace with an existing or new industrial building. The hybrid created results in space that has daily retail sales and hours, as well as other goods available at other times. The industrial aspect typically acts as the anchor, as the market’s activities help attract a different group of consumers at other business times. An example of this would be a seafood supply warehouse that also provides dining and entertainment as a nightlife destination.

Architecture Of Illusion: An Investigation Into Cinematic Deception In Camden Town, London, Kathryn Klesseck Jan 2014

Architecture Of Illusion: An Investigation Into Cinematic Deception In Camden Town, London, Kathryn Klesseck

Architecture Theses

This thesis project departs from Guy Debord’s Society of the Spectacle by claiming that architecture temporarily supports a passive acceptance of the environment. Architecture has the ability to confront its own crisis of spectacle by offering a different illusion. This thesis project proposes to create an architectural device through which an illusion can occur that aids in altering the perception of reality and counter the illusion of spectacle described by Debord. The illusion to act as a model for this project will be the cinematic illusion. An architecture of cinematic illusion seeks to question how reality can be perceived through …

A New Focus For The Future: Historic Preservation Practices And Vocational High School Curriculum, A Massachusetts Concentration, Duane D. Houghton

Historic Preservation Theses

Graduates of vocational high schools account for the largest group of trade professionals in the construction and remodeling industry. The various concentrations provide prospective graduates with the skills, knowledge and education they need to succeed in the industry. After graduation former students are prepared to hold several different jobs in the industrial, commercial and residential areas; some work as independent contractors for various clients and projects, while others may be hired by firms on an ongoing basis.

The issue exists that although these types of vocational schools are producing valuable assets to the community they seem to promote construction and …

Reclaimed Identity/Innov - Roc: The Innovation Hub + Revitalization Of High Falls, Rochester, Ny, Justin M. Dufresne

The project must draw on several community partners and …

The meaningful relationships between users (the people) of Camp Santanoni’s buildings and the surrounding landscape (the place) were documented.

Unconscious Thought In Peripatetic Philosophy, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2014

Unconscious Thought In Peripatetic Philosophy, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

In Aristotle’s De anima 3.5, the relation between intellect and thought, and between thought and object, is not accessible to discursive or conscious thought; an understanding of the relation requires nous, intuitive or “unconscious” thought. The “active” intellect is accessible to discursive reason only sporadically. “Mind does not think intermittently” (De anima 430a10–25): mind is always thinking, consciously and unconsciously. Alexander of Aphrodisias saw the active intellect as transcendent in relation to the material intellect. The thought which is an object of thought is immaterial, or unconscious. In his De intellectu (108), there must be something at work …

Plotinus: The First Philosopher Of The Unconscious, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2014

Plotinus: The First Philosopher Of The Unconscious, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

Plotinus is sometimes referred to as “the first philosopher of the unconscious.” In his 1960 essay “Consciousness and Unconsciousness in Plotinus,” Hans Rudolph Schwyzer called Plotinus “the discoverer of the unconscious.” What exactly was Plotinus’ unconscious? In the Enneads, Plotinus asks about soul and intellect: “Why then…do we not consciously grasp them…? For not everything which is in the soul is immediately perceptible” (V.1.12.1–15).[i] In the De anima of Aristotle, “Mind does not think intermittently” (430a10–25).[ii]We cannot remember eternal mind in us, because passive mind is perishable. Is the productive or active intelligence in our mind …
