A Method For Selecting Hvac Retrofit Solutions For Existing Small- And Medium-Sized Commercial Buildings, Bonggil Jeon Dec 2016

A Method For Selecting Hvac Retrofit Solutions For Existing Small- And Medium-Sized Commercial Buildings, Bonggil Jeon

Open Access Dissertations

The primary purpose of the present study is to develop a framework and methodology for evaluating appropriate Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) retrofit solutions that can be effectively retrofitted into different types of small- and medium-sized commercial buildings (SMSCB). Additionally, development of an advanced data-driven decision-making tool is introduced as a benefit of proposed framework. In recent years, considerable attention has been focused on retrofits of existing commercial buildings (IBE, 2013b). In fact, the Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) 2003 (EIA, 2006) indicates that over 70% of existing commercial buildings across the United States are more than twenty …

Dynamic Green Split Optimization In Intersection Signal Design For Urban Street Network, Peng Jiao

Open Access Theses

In the past few decades, auto travel demand in the United States has significantly increased, but roadway capacity unfortunately has not expanded as quickly, which has led to severe levels of highway traffic congestion in many areas. In theory, the problem of congestion addressed through demand management and roadway expansion. However, system expansion in urban areas is difficult due to the extremely high cost of land; therefore, maximizing the existing capacity therefore often is considered the most realistic option. In urban areas, most of the traffic congestion and delays typically occur at signalized intersections. This thesis aims to prove the …

Potential Energy Savings And Benefits To Thermal Comfort From The Effective Use Of Window Blinds, Saurabh Sudhakaran Apr 2016

Potential Energy Savings And Benefits To Thermal Comfort From The Effective Use Of Window Blinds, Saurabh Sudhakaran

Open Access Theses

This research work involves the study of usage patterns of window blinds by the occupants of a multi-story apartment buildings in Lafayette, IN. The goal of this study is to understand the processes of enhancing comfort by changing window blind positioning through various times of the day. To achieve this the researcher studied the actual window blind usage pattern of the building under consideration. The researcher also surveyed the occupants of the building to record comfort preferences and its effect on window blind usage. The window pattern is simulated into an energy model and its predicted energy consumption is compared …
