A Method For Selecting Hvac Retrofit Solutions For Existing Small- And Medium-Sized Commercial Buildings, Bonggil Jeon
A Method For Selecting Hvac Retrofit Solutions For Existing Small- And Medium-Sized Commercial Buildings, Bonggil Jeon
Open Access Dissertations
The primary purpose of the present study is to develop a framework and methodology for evaluating appropriate Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) retrofit solutions that can be effectively retrofitted into different types of small- and medium-sized commercial buildings (SMSCB). Additionally, development of an advanced data-driven decision-making tool is introduced as a benefit of proposed framework. In recent years, considerable attention has been focused on retrofits of existing commercial buildings (IBE, 2013b). In fact, the Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) 2003 (EIA, 2006) indicates that over 70% of existing commercial buildings across the United States are more than twenty …
Modeling Person-To-Person Contaminant Transport In Enclosed Environments, Chun Chen
Modeling Person-To-Person Contaminant Transport In Enclosed Environments, Chun Chen
Open Access Dissertations
It is essential to predict person-to-person contaminant transport in enclosed environments to improve air distribution design and reduce the infection risk from airborne infectious diseases. This study aims to improve and accelerate the simulation of person-to-person contaminant transport in enclosed environments. ^ This investigation first conducted experimental measurements of person-to-person contaminant transport in an office mockup and the first-class cabin of a functional MD-82 aircraft. The experimental data of steady-state airflow, temperature, and gas contaminant concentration fields obtained in the office were used to validate the steady-state computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. In the aircraft cabin, the transient particle concentrations …
Development Of Simulation Modules For Liquid Desiccant Systems In Sorpsim, Zhiyao Yang
Development Of Simulation Modules For Liquid Desiccant Systems In Sorpsim, Zhiyao Yang
Open Access Theses
Liquid Desiccant Systems (LDS) have been an attractive alternative to the conventional vapor-compression air conditioning technology in HVAC applications for their thermally-driven nature and the expertise in dealing with large latent load in a more energy-efficient way. Much effort has been made during the past decades to study the performance of LDS and their components both experimentally and through modelling approach. However, predicting the performance of LDS is still a skill-demanding task because it involves model implementation, retrieval of fluid properties, solving procedure setup, and preparation of a good set of initial guess value to model just one component. It …

Absorption Simulation ( Absim ) Software Development, Vipul Vishnu Bhat, Ming Qu
Absorption Simulation ( Absim ) Software Development, Vipul Vishnu Bhat, Ming Qu
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Researchers working on air conditioning systems currently use a software called ABSIM ( Absorption Simulation ) to evaluate current absorption systems or simulate new system designs. ABSIM was developed at Oak Ridge National Labs in the 1980s and the latest platform it is compatible with is Windows XP. ABSIM is not compatible on newer platforms and is not very user friendly. A lot of the actions involved in using ABSIM aren’t very intuitive. The goal is to develop a more user friendly simulation program that is based off of ABSIM and see to it that the program can be deployed …
Compression Testing And Failure Modes Of Steel-Concrete Composite (Sc) Structures For Nuclear Containment, Patrick Michael Wanamaker, Amit H. Varma
Compression Testing And Failure Modes Of Steel-Concrete Composite (Sc) Structures For Nuclear Containment, Patrick Michael Wanamaker, Amit H. Varma
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Although being able to provide much cleaner power than burning coal and other fossil fuels, nuclear power plants are still a tough sell to the general public due to their history of being spontaneously dangerous. The containment structures surrounding these nuclear plants, however, can play a huge role in reducing the risks associated with them. Relatively new designs for these containment assemblies, known as SC (steel-concrete composite) structures, aim to increase the strength and durability of the containment facilities while keeping costs down. By varying the spacing between shear studs, the ratio of concrete to steel, and the ratio of …
Environmental Monitoring In Preparation For The Installation Of A Green Roof, Andrew N. Martin, Ming Qu
Environmental Monitoring In Preparation For The Installation Of A Green Roof, Andrew N. Martin, Ming Qu
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Green roofs are becoming an increasingly popular way to improve the environmental, economic, and aesthetic performance of both new and existing buildings. Along with the green roofs themselves, it is also common to install sensors to measure various environmental parameters that are affected by or important to the operation of the roof such as precipitation, temperature, and runoff. However, for most of these systems, the sensors are installed at the same time or even after the green roof. Therefore, no before-and-after comparisons can be made for those roofs. To account for this missing data, monitoring equipment was installed on a …

Investigating The Effect Specific Credits Of The Leed Rating System Have On The Energy Performance Of An Existing Building, Richelle Fosu
Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses
Throughout this thesis the potential financial and energy usage impact an upgrade to green building standards would have on an antiquated building has been analyzed. The extent of the implementation of specific LEED rating system credits that relate directly or indirectly to the energy consumption of a building have been demonstrated, through the means of several simulations using Revit, eQuest, Ecotect and Vasari simulation tools. This thesis also attempted to provide a clear understanding and overview of the plausibility of the suggested upgrades to be made, with regards to financial investment required for such upgrades, by using simple payback calculations …
Assessing The Engineering Performance Of Affordable Net-Zero Energy Housing, Jordan P. Wallpe
Assessing The Engineering Performance Of Affordable Net-Zero Energy Housing, Jordan P. Wallpe
Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses
The purpose of this research was to evaluate affordable technologies that are capable of providing attractive, cost-effective energy savings to the housing industry. The research did so by investigating the 2011 Solar Decathlon competition, with additional insight from the Purdue INhome. Insight from the Purdue INhome verified the importance of using a three step design process to design a net-zero energy building. In addition, energy consumption values of the INhome were used to compare and contrast different systems used in other houses.
Evaluation of unbiased competition contests gave a better understanding of how a house can realistically reach net-zero. Upon …
