BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Abstract: We live in a constantly changing world, a multi-faceted world vacillating between joy and happiness on one side and sadness and desolation on the other. We have indeed witnessed, recently, much sadness and misfortune resulting from both human and natural disasters. Whether individual or collective, the risks are assessed having regard to our cultural determinism, taking into account values, standards and living conditions of individuals. Our purpose, which falls within the framework of the theory of social representations (Moscovici (1986)), would be to account for the impact of the disaster on the behavior of the individual and of society, …

The Near And Distant Discourse Towards Disasterle Discours Proche Et Lointain Envers La Catastrophe, Mohammed Alkhattib
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Abstract: When it comes to talk about a disaster, it is not easy to maintain the objectivity and neutrality towards the event. Emotions can be very explicit, especially when the speaker is “related” to the people affected. “Related” with means kinship does not only mean being a member of one's family, but also of the same region, the same country, or even the same ethnic group. This research aims making a linguistic and discursive comparison between the discourse of two different cultures (Arab and Western) towards the catastrophe. We will take as an example, the disaster of the Jordanian school …

Use Of Biomimicry Design Approach In Constructing Sustainable Resilient Structures (Case Study: Port Of Beirut), Farouk Bader, Marwan Halabi, Hiba Mohsen, Maged Youssef
BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development
Resiliency is not the same as sustainability, nor its substitute, but definitely the two concepts complement each other’s. Sustainability is the avoidance of depletion of natural resources to maintain ecological balance whereas resiliency is to recover, adapt and keep going in the face of setbacks. While designing with green approach is important but what will happen to leed points if the building becomes uninhabitable due to disasters, that’s where resiliency comes into play. The 2019 statistics showed that natural disasters accounted for 133 billion dollars losses and manmade ones accounted for other 7 billion in addition to 11,755 people worldwide …

New York After 9/11 [Chapter: Conflict And Change], Zachary Baron Shemtob, Patrick Sweeney, Susan Opotow
New York State City & Regional
An estimated 2 billion people around the world watched the catastrophic destruction of the World Trade Center. The enormity of the moment was immediately understood, and both news coverage and history of the catastrophe quickly took on global proportions—less understood has been the effect on the locus of the attacks, New York City, not as a seat of political or economic power, but as a community; not in the days and weeks afterward, but in the months and years. This period of tumultuous change offers important insights about New York today and holds important lessons for the future. New York …
Emergency Homes, Denise A. Lee
Emergency Homes, Denise A. Lee
Architecture Senior Theses
“Designers cannot just stand by and watch as the refugee crisis unfolds,” and although architects and designers can’t save the world, through design, we can alleviate consequences of scarcity. It’s not about creating a structure that will withstand the ends of time or endure the most extreme climate, it’s about how to respond in an emergency with the most geographically intelligent prototype that utilizes the utmost importance of on site materials so the bare minimum of an instruction manual or few key tools to offset distribution obstacles. This thesis is aimed to design for the 99 in disaster relief.

Post Disaster (War) Rapid Reconstruction And Its Impact On Reducing Living Space At Residential Houses In Kosova, Lulzim Beqiri, Zejnulla Rexhepi, Mimoza Sylejmani
UBT International Conference
Reconstruction process as a huge need after disaster, a part that is creating emergency shelter for people in need, as well has a direct impact on living space as one of the emergency created after every disaster. This paper aims to identify the impact of intervention of humanitarian organizations without being coordinated and agreed on minimal living standards that will be applicable during reconstruction phase because of environment created after disaster. Kosova was exposed to the war on 1998-1999 and massive destruction of 250000 residential houses (EAR 2000) and as result within several years after the war was over, the …
Speculative Future Metabolic Architecture, Haley Erin Moore
Speculative Future Metabolic Architecture, Haley Erin Moore
Masters Theses
Speculating the implications of a metabolic architecture provides a platform for thinking about a new way of future building. Disaster scenarios such as floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, nuclear fallouts, and others are unavoidable events. Instead of building compressively, meaning building to defend against scenarios such as disasters, the future should include building in the way a natural system behaves, in flux, with material dependencies, and as an output produced from the exchange of materials, reactions, or responses that occur in a metabolism. Architecture must be thought of as an output of a metabolism, an altered input, where this output is unknown …
The Self Sufficient Pod, Brenna Merola
The Self Sufficient Pod, Brenna Merola
Architecture Thesis Prep
This thesis presents a typology of temporary relief housing that will be self sustaining and will better address the procedure and process of housing individuals affected by disasters. The proposed pod will be adaptable in order to fit the needs of different types of environmental conditions, while still encompassing the architectural necessities of light, heat, and energy.

Mudflow disaster damage job opportunity, disrupt social life and settlement, thus requiring resettlement. Need to understand whether physical condition of resettlement is in accordance with background and housing preference of victim, due to significant differences of housing design. Aspects studied were characteristic of resettlement, physical condition of house and socio-economic mobility. Research was done using qualitative method. Technique of data collection was used retrospective interviews and observation. This research result indicates that most participants experienced conformity in house physical condition and socioeconomic mobility. Reason of unconformity condition is housing facility which has not meet housing standard.
The Under Wing Home, David Harrington
The Under Wing Home, David Harrington
David E. Harrington
It is quite astonishing that most homes being built today fail to adequately respond to natural disasters. Looking within the last decade, the data indicates that these disasters are more frequent than they once were, and are affecting a larger geographical area. Many believe that these patterns will only escalate. The magnitude and frequency of these tornadoes and hurricanes are hard to ignore. The power and destruction inflicted has affected most Americans in a multitude of ways. We simply cannot continue to build homes using typical methods of construction in these disaster-prone areas. To re-build a home in the same …
Shared Trauma: A Phenomenological Investigation Of African American Teachers, Juanita Lynne White
Shared Trauma: A Phenomenological Investigation Of African American Teachers, Juanita Lynne White
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the wake of increasing community disasters such as hurricanes, neighborhood violence, and terrorist attacks, schools are usually deemed places where youth can find safety and stability. Research about community trauma related to the role of teachers and schools has predominantly focused on younger populations, concerned about disturbances in their developmental processes. School teachers' responsibilities related to these community disasters have also increased and now include supporting their traumatized students. However, there has been limited attention on the direct effect of community traumas on the teachers who work and live in affected districts. The construct of shared trauma describes this …

Measuring The Adoption Of Development Management Policies As An Instrument Of Disaster Mitigation Toward Resilient Coastal Communities In Florida, Asmaul Husna
Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses and Student Projects
Coastal hazards have been known as the scariest group of hazards, monsters that threaten 39% of the nation population and in less than 10 years. With the current population growth, the monsters will harm almost half of the nation’s population (45% to be exact) and uncountable properties placed at only 17% of land area of the country. The threat of coastal hazards has never been low, but it keeps rising because no human being in this world can prevent, stop, contain or avoid the hazards from happening. But, there always are ways to lower the risk and the loss with …

Building Capability For Disaster Resilience, Lynn Crawford, Craig Langston, Bhishna Bajracharya
Lynn Crawford
All levels of government recognise the widespread devastation of communities by natural or other disasters. They have responded with emergency management arrangements and policies to enhance government and community capacity to anticipate, withstand and recover from disastrous events. Although the construction industry has a significant role to play, particularly in recovery and reconstruction, it has not generally been considered as a key stakeholder in building capability for disaster resilience. One barrier to more active involvement of the construction industry in disaster response and management is that traditional methods of construction project management have been criticised as too time consuming and …

Post-Earthquake Housing Recovery In Bachhau, India: The Homeowner, The Renter, And The Squatter, Anuradha Mukherji
Anuradha Mukherji
This paper looks at post-earthquake housing recovery in Bachhau, a town close to the epicenter of the 2001 Gujarat earthquake in western India. This research examines the difference in housing recovery outcomes among homeowners, squatters, and renters in Bachhau, in order to understand why single-family homeowners and squatters were able to rebuild and improve their housing conditions whereas low-income renters continued to struggle toward housing recovery. This paper shows that communities in Bachhau did not have the resources or capacities to rebuild themselves and that appropriate public assistance was critical for housing recovery. While public assistance was mainly targeted to …

Negotiating Housing Recovery In Post-Earthquake Urban Kutch, India, Anuradha Mukherji
Anuradha Mukherji
The 2001 Kutch earthquake, in Gujarat state in western India, destroyed 230,000 houses and damaged another 1 million. In Bhuj and Bachhau, urban centers close to the epicenter of the earthquake, single-family houses, squatter settlements, and high-rise apartments were destroyed, and public and private housing reconstruction programs were introduced to help communities rebuild their houses. However, five years after the disaster, in spite of interventions by local and global, public and private entities, many communities in both towns continued to struggle towards housing recovery. This dissertation examines why some communities were able to rebuild and improve their overall housing conditions …
The Interactive Medical Emergency Department (Imed): Architectural Integration Of Digital Systems Into The Emergency Care Environment, David Ruthven
The Interactive Medical Emergency Department (Imed): Architectural Integration Of Digital Systems Into The Emergency Care Environment, David Ruthven
All Theses
In healthcare, the architectural response to the development of information technologies has largely been relegated to a reactive role, essentially waiting for systems to develop and simply accommodating them with appropriately sized spaces. Designing IT systems independently from, rather than integrally with, their environment impedes them from reaching their full potential as vital components in the delivery of care by creating a lack of flexibility, decelerating performance, and degrading the healing environment. The flexibility of the environment is compromised by fixed position, single user data systems which prevent it from actively adapting to changing conditions, especially during volumetric surges associated …
