Proposed Charlotte To Atlanta High-Speed Passenger Rail Line: An Economic, Infrastructural, And Developmental Analysis In The Upstate Of South Carolina, Ian C. Macurda, Kimberly Whitehead
SC Upstate Research Symposium
This research paper is an in-depth analysis of the high-speed passenger rail line proposed between Charlotte, NC and Atlanta, GA and its impact on the economy, infrastructure, and future development of the Upstate of South Carolina. Currently, passenger rail service between Charlotte and Atlanta is offered on Amtrak at late hours throughout the night on its long-distance passenger rail line The Crescent from New York City, NY to New Orleans, LA. The train is often delayed and is operating at a deficit for Amtrak, like most of their long-distance routes. Traffic on Interstate 85 through the Upstate is another issue …

Site Development Feasibility Study, Andy A. Tenekjian
Site Development Feasibility Study, Andy A. Tenekjian
Construction Management
A feasibility study in the world of construction is deemed as a preliminary due diligence process in which key components of a project are addressed to determine if the project is viable or not. These components are related to time and money, and the end goal of a feasibility study is to determine if the initial investment of time and money is worth the amount of future financial return. What deems a project successful in the preliminary stage is up for interpretation. Each developer and investor have their own return on investment threshold in a multi-family project like the one …

A City Divided: A Gis-Informed Study Of Urban Planning In Amman, Jordan, Ella Lawson
Honors Theses
Amman, the capital of Jordan, faces an impending infrastructure crisis. The city is plagued by water shortages, a lack of affordable housing, extreme traffic congestion, and dwindling open space. Over the past seventy-five years, several urban planning commissions have attempted to address these issues through policy change and other municipal directives. These plans help illustrate the different forces at play in constructing the city—whether they be the residents themselves, city officials, or international consultants. All the plans use neighborhoods as a primary metric for measuring need and organizing development. Likewise, all the plans focus on the importance of green and …

UBT International Conference
The main function of art galleries is the promotion of fine arts. Different arts are considered as drawings, pictures, figurines, wires or installation art. Young artists dream of displaying their artwork in the gallery because it is a way to start building their career. Art worshipers visit art galleries and explore the artworks exhibited. If the artwork is good, it will gain recognition and there will be an opportunity for the artist to be well-known. Art galleries have two classifications: the exclusive and open audience. Exclusive art galleries are held for the private purpose of promoting and selling works of …

America’S Finest Housing Crisis: Racialized Housing & Suburban Development, Vicenta Martinez Govea
McNair Summer Research Program
U.S. Government operations between 1940-1950 brought unprecedented direct and indirect employment opportunities to San Diego, exacerbating an already growing housing shortage. To accommodate the thousands of new defense workers, the government produced the largest defense housing project to date in the small neighborhood of Linda Vista. However, this opportunity and largesse was extended primarily to a select group of white working-class families who had access to defense jobs and, consequently, subsidized housing. Military presence in San Diego during World War II shaped the design of homes and exclusively allocated housing, as both shelter and financial instrument, to white working-class families …

Improving The Design Quality Of Housing Buildings, Ehab Nasr Elden Ahmed
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Design quality is essential to improve the standards of living and is progressively being accepted as critical to successful new housing developments. A better design quality provides attractive and sensitively planned homes that form communities, and assists in creating a healthier and advanced fellowship. As new housing growth in Egypt has missed reaching the universal rules and guidelines of design quality, this research reviews several experiences of foreign offices and governmental programs that deal with amending the design character of housing buildings. Using these Guidelines enables commissioning high performance housing facilities that improve the general standards of a better design …

“An Integrated Approach On Spatial Planning And Territorial Cohesion”, Binak Beqaj
UBT International Conference
The growth, (without) urban planning especially in developing countries such as Kosovo implies a large spatial extent of smaller and larger settlements. The consistency of their coexistence in space (territory) within the development concepts remains a key issue with regard to territorial cohesion. In this context, research questions should be raised:
- How does the position and extent of the territory as well as the specific geographic conditions affect the spatial planning?
- How to address the population, structure, movements, density and growth in the correct accommodation of their needs?
- Why do communications, interconnections and the polycentric concept are the basis for …

Urban Waterfronts And Planning For Industry, Anne Taufen, J. Mark Pendras
Urban Design
The 2019 studio and this report foreground two main issues. First, WE NEED INDUSTRY. The jobs and economic prosperity that are created through industrial development are essential to the sustainability of this region. People need reliable, living-wage employment in order to provide for themselves and their loved ones; contribute to the local housing, service, and retail economies; make use of their intrinsic capacities; and give back to the communities of which they are a part. Industry is the act of working hard, as well as a certain kind of production and manufacturing economy. People in the South Sound want and …

The Empty Mill: An Analysis Of A Disappearing Linchpin Of Southern Society And Its Hope For A Preserved Future, Matthew South Bright
Senior Theses
August Kohn’s report, The Cotton Mills of South Carolina, published in The News and Courier in 1907, attempted to document the impact that cotton mills in South Carolina had on its places, people, and growth. Over 100 years since the lists publishing, a comprehensive evaluation of the mills had not been undertaken. This thesis endeavored to evaluate the current status of the South Carolina cotton mills from Kohn's 1907 list. Of the original 141 mills, 120 were successfully located and their status mapped in a Geographic Information System (GIS). Sixty-six were found demolished, twenty-five were standing, and twenty-nine were developed …

“In Principle” Versus “In Reality”: Assessing The Potential Of Adaptive Urban Governance Toward Urban Flooding In Ho Chi Minh City’S District 7, Cindy Pham Nguyen
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Flooding has become the new normal in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). During the rainy season, many areas of the city experience severe inundation that seriously impacts infrastructure, traffic, and economic transactions. As the effects of climate change unpredictably and rapidly manifest in Southern Vietnam, the frequency and impact of urban floods are projected to increase. In addition, within the last few decades, HCMC has rapidly developed and urbanized, transforming itself into the economic center of Southern Vietnam. However, previous studies and international experts have determined that rapid, poor development may be exacerbating urban flood issues.
In recent years, city …

The phenomenon of squatters is one of the urban problems facing many cities in developing countries. UN-HABITAT statistics estimated that the proportion of people living in such areas is 30 per cent of the total urban population [1]. With growing economic investment and job opportunities in major cities, many of the problems of squatters have emerged to absorbing new immigrants, especially with the lack of housing supply [2]. Locally, Government agencies such as the Government of Mecca Region, the Holy City Municipality and the Mecca Region Development Authority (MRDA) have adopted a number of strategies to develop squatters including removal, …

Managing The Rapid Urban Growth For Cities In Transition Countries, Binak Beqaj, Ylber Limani, Driton R. Kryeziu
International Journal of Business and Technology
Through political transition, socio-economical trends of cities as urban areas contributed to huge movements of population from rural to urban areas or from small urban areas toward big urban areas, making them bigger, under the rapid growth. Those cities have faced:
- Overloads with number of citizens,
- Lack of adequate infrastructure and
- Creativity deficiency for drafting and implementing urban development vision.
Consequently, the question is what qualitative life do cities offer when considering abovementioned suppositions related to rapid urban growth?
In general, for cities under rapid development, experts and authorities have not sufficiently succeeded to develop proper methodologies to neutralize chaotically …

Assessment Of The Potential Of Proposed Stations Of The California High-Speed Rail As Major Hubs For Physical And Economic Development, Seitu Akira Coleman
Master's Theses
This study investigated the potential for development of station catchment areas around the proposed California High-Speed Rail System. The study was prompted by a review of practices of Japanese railway company groups that engage not only in train operations, but also in business diversification and property development within the station areas of their lines. These actions allow the company groups to diversify their revenues streams, increase ridership on their lines, and operate as a whole with net profits. This is in contrast to transit agencies in the United States, which only focus on transporting passengers along their lines and do …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Wildland fire is an important and complex issue, particularly in the fire-prone ecosystems of the Western United States. At the same time that the number of catastrophic wildland fires is increasing across the United States, more people are moving in to wildland areas growing the interface between urban and wildlands. Managing wildfire in the Western United States is becoming increasingly more complex and costly as growth and development continues to push the edge of municipalities into undeveloped wildlands. Communities in this wildland urban interface are exacerbating the problem of wildfire in the West.
With more people living in wildfire prone …
