Materiality And Sensibility:Phenomenological Studies Of Brick As Architectural Material, Tony Sofian, Iwan Sudradjat, Baskoro Tedjo

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

An incessant challenge for the architects nowadays is how to design architectural projects that support the creation of meaningful experiences, benefitting from the interconnection between building materiality and human sensibility. The purpose of this study is to provide a phenomenological understanding of brick as an architectural material and how people perceive its architectural space and interpret its architectural meaning. Method of phenomenological analysis from Moustakas (1994) is adopted to guide the whole research procedures; using in-depth and multiple interviews with the users of three different buildings who shared experiences in inhibiting and interacting with the environment created with brick as …

Iiid: A Detailed Look Into System Integration Of Material Types Through The Use Of 3d Printing, Johnathon E. Phillips Apr 2017

Iiid: A Detailed Look Into System Integration Of Material Types Through The Use Of 3d Printing, Johnathon E. Phillips

Architecture Senior Theses

This thesis wishes to pursue the potential of 3D printing ornamented designs with the use of shale/clay powder. This material compound, through this research, had been shown to be compliable with 3D printing technology so that it can be sculpted by the tools of the architect into complex geometric “blocks.” These can then be printed and red allowing them to become the tectonic building bricks for a new way of building. Through researching this material, I will demonstrate the usefulness and possibilities of this time-tested substance in the creation of new architectural spaces.

"A Posture Of Defence": A Forensic Brick Analysis Of Charleston's Seventeenth And Eighteenth Century Walled Fortifications, Jacqueline Don May 2015

"A Posture Of Defence": A Forensic Brick Analysis Of Charleston's Seventeenth And Eighteenth Century Walled Fortifications, Jacqueline Don

All Theses

The fortification walls that once protected the bustling colonial port of Charles Town, South Carolina lie buried under a thriving, modern city. After almost a century of rediscovery and neglect, local scholarly expertise in the form of a city task force regularly explore the history and structure of the walls that once played an integral role in the daily operations, survival, and success of the young and isolated British colony. Archaeological excavations and archival research within the last decade have made significant progress in unearthing information previously lost to development and memory. These methods have experienced limitations, however, since access …

Profile Of An Origin: A Chemical And Physical Characterization Study Of Historic Brick And Clay From The Ashley River, South Carolina, Kristina Marie Lanphear May 2011

Profile Of An Origin: A Chemical And Physical Characterization Study Of Historic Brick And Clay From The Ashley River, South Carolina, Kristina Marie Lanphear

All Theses

The goal of this thesis is to develop an adapted scientific methodology for identifying the clay region or source location for a particular brick used in early Charleston, South Carolina. The focus of the paper will be on the Ashley River region. It will review previous scholarly research, theses, and publications on Charleston brick, geology of the river and selected analytical methods with intent to build on this topic. A justification is also given for the selection of the materials and testing methods used for the study. Through chemical and physical characterization testing, of clay sites and bricks of known …

Seismic Performance Of Unreinforced Masonry Walls Retrofitted With Post-Tensioning Tendons, Daniel Louis Lazzarini Jun 2009

Seismic Performance Of Unreinforced Masonry Walls Retrofitted With Post-Tensioning Tendons, Daniel Louis Lazzarini

Master's Theses

Unreinforced masonry (URM) structures have historically been regarded as structurally unsound in response to seismic events. The tendency for URM walls to collapse out-of-plane in a brittle manner is continually cause for concern. Retrofit of these walls is necessary in order to prevent severe damage and injury to occupants.

This paper is concerned with the retrofit of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls in response to out-of-plane loading. A retrofit design was developed and verified through structural testing. The selected retrofit technique incorporates vertical coring of URM walls to allow for the insertion of a single post-tensioning (PT) tendon. Tendons are spaced …

Building Case Studies

A zoning district requirement specifying a masonry enclosure for the two street walls created an opportunity to respond directly to the Puck Building, one of New York’s most recognizable masonry buildings. We then focused the idea on the reinterpretation of local laws and regulations with a contemporary response to masonry construction and detailing that doesn’t attempt to imitate the past.

Building Case Studies

High level of porosity in the central portion of the wall. Effective horizontal bonding and load distribution between the bricks. No visible intrusion of any material other than brick masonry onto the façade. The repeating pattern modules must be complete end to end over the entire width and height of the wall i.e. there should be no deviation in the pattern. Through computer modeling, the architects realized that a simple rotating module of bricks would create the kind of visual and textural complexity need to achieve the design objective of engaging the street corner
