The Paul Revere Mall: The Synthesis Of The Ideal And The Circumstantial, John B. Burse
Architecture Thesis Prep
"The intent of my proposal for thesis is an investigation of the synthesis of the ideal and the circumstantial. In the collage of these distinct and different qualities, a demonstration of how urban building can not only respond to but enhance the given conditions of a city will be presented. The resultant coexistence of the two I believe to be an ideal in and of itself."

The Greenfield Versus Brownfield Debate: A Balanced Approach To Industrial Planning, John R. Mullin, Zenia Kotval, Maureen Moriarty
The Greenfield Versus Brownfield Debate: A Balanced Approach To Industrial Planning, John R. Mullin, Zenia Kotval, Maureen Moriarty
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series
Across the United States, mill towns and industrial communities, the "brownfields", have been experiencing rapid disinvestment as manufacturing and service firms increasingly move to suburban industrial parks, the "greenfields". This locational trend has been intensified over the years by our policies and regulations for industrial development. Is this shifting balance a desired result of our policies? The authors believe this trend has had negative effects on both the center cities left behind, as well as on the communities which are being developed. Analysis of the "Greenfield-Brownfield" debate can assist economic development planners in promoting balanced industrial growth. This article analyzes …

Cultural Corridor: A Preservation District In Downtown Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Augusto Ivan Pinheiro, Vicente Del Rio
City and Regional Planning
This paper concerns the first large-scale urban-design project in Brazil to deal with preservation and revitalization in the inner city. In protecting the cultural heritage while still encouraging new construction, the project has been successful in setting a new methodology for development control and in reinforcing the traditional character of a large area of downtown Rio de Janeiro. Within the framework of an overall design-review process, the project has made use of special land-use regulations, design guidelines, participatory and educational programs, and substantial tax deductions. Traditional architectural patterns and uses have been reinforced, and development pressure from large corporations has …

"Indirect Regulation" Of Environmental Hazards Through The Provision Of Information To The Public: The Case Of Sara, Title Iii, Richard C. Rich, W. David Conn, William L. Owens
City and Regional Planning
Title III of the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 seeks to reduce the risks of chemical accidents through a strategy of indirect regulation that relies on providing the public with information about chemical hazards. For this strategy to be effective, citizens must aggressively utilize the information provided to monitor industrial practices and press for risk reduction. Since prior research suggests it is very difficult to evoke the degree of citizen action that would be required to make a strategy of indirect regulation successful, and since the federal legislation provided no funds for implementation, there is a question o/whether …

This action was the result of an initiative by Massachusetts State Representative Richard T. Moore of Uxbridge, who suggested a renewal of a working relationship between the towns and the Economic Development Administration(EDA), as EDA is viewed as an agency that might complement an array of economic development efforts throughout the state.
Following a preliminary planning meeting in Uxbridge on December 2, 1992, this …

Center for Economic Development Technical Reports
It is getting harder and harder for people working in urbanized areas to find affordable housing near their workplace. As new urbanized office and industrial areas expand and the cost of housing increases, employees are finding themselves having to commute longer distances between work and home. This results in traffic congestion, increased pollution and decreased employee satisfaction. Some companies are finding that the lack of locally available and affordable housing is making it harder to recruit and retain employees.
One solution to this problem is for large corporations to develop housing for their employees within walking distance of the job, …
