Western boomtowns have been the focus of intense planning activity since the early 1970's. The goal of this activity has been to manage rapid growth caused by large energy, industrial, and resource developments. Planning assistance has been made available to impact communities in a variety of forms including financial aid from senior levels of government and from impacting industries, economic and demographic forecasting models, growth-management consulting firms, case studies, and comprehensive handbooks for community action. There has been rapid mobilization of sophisticated administrative and technical expertise to mitigate the problems of impacted communities.

The original intent of this paper was to examine early mormon pioneer woodworking. Upon investigation, however, it was discovered that there is one type of early utah mormon woodworking about which very little has been written and which includes some of the best efforts of these early craftsmen. This woodworking is the interior work done in the construction of the early mormon temples. This paper will attempt to document the state of early pioneer craftsmanship and show examples of this work.

The Dooley estate, Maymont, is located at 1700 Hampton Street in Richmond, Virginia. Once a dairy farm, the approximately 105-acre home site is adjacent to the popular Byrd Park and overlooks the James River. In this paper I have researched the architectural construction of the Dooley mansion and its significance to the Richmond area with regards to the Dooleys, their art collections, and their interest in European trends.
