Building The Federal Judiciary (Literally And Legally): The Monuments Of Chief Justices Taft, Warren And Rehnquist, Judith Resnik
Indiana Law Journal
The “federal courts” took on their now familiar contours over the course of the twentieth century. Three chief justices—William Howard Taft, Earl Warren, and William Rehnquist—played pivotal roles in shaping the institutional, jurisprudential, and physical premises. Taft is well known for promoting a building to house the U.S. Supreme Court and for launching the administrative infrastructure that came to govern the federal courts. Earl Warren’s name has become the shorthand for a jurisprudential shift from state toward federal authority; the Warren Court offered an expansive understanding of the role federal courts could play in enabling access for a host of …

Sprawl In The Western United States: Do State Growth Management Programs Reduce Sprawl?, Jenna Nash
Sprawl In The Western United States: Do State Growth Management Programs Reduce Sprawl?, Jenna Nash
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Sprawl is faulted for contributing to excessive commuting and transportation costs, raising the cost of providing infrastructure and other public services (Carruthers, 2002). With the advent of the environmental movement in the 1960s, concern for the impact urban growth was having on the environment caused a surge of growth management legislation that eventually led to several states implementing state growth management programs (SGMPs). While there have been several studies done on the effectiveness of SGMPs in containing sprawl, there have been no studies of state-growth management that focus solely on the Western States, states that have many characteristics in common …

Hydroelectric Power Station, Michael Becker, Franz G. Schröck, Bernhard Kast
Oz
On the left bank of the Iller River, a new, highly efficient hydroelectric power station has been built to replace an older power station from the 1950s. The power station supports approximately three thousand households with 10.5 million kilowatt-hours of environmentally friendly power per year.
Anthropological View Of Architecture: An Alternative Approach To Study Human Environments, Supakit Yimsrual
Anthropological View Of Architecture: An Alternative Approach To Study Human Environments, Supakit Yimsrual
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
Architectural descriptions mostly focus on the material aspects of a building with relatively little said about the social life of the people who inhabit architecture. In recent decades, many architects andanthropologists have begun to connect architectural works with the development of social and cultural anthropology. The term "architectural anthropology" has been suggested to describe the interrelation between humans and their built environment. Based on historical documents, this paper outlines the development of architectural anthropology and aims to illustrate how this approach can help us to understand the relation between people, their ideas of the world and the creation of a …
Investigating 3 Axis Cnc Processes For Creating 3d Objects, Michael Jake Newsum
Investigating 3 Axis Cnc Processes For Creating 3d Objects, Michael Jake Newsum
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
Using 3 axis CNC (computer numerical code) routing processes of the Visualization Lab, the CNC was tested for 3D object milling. The CNC process was designed for manufacturing 2D cut out objects with or without a 3D surface. The processes of modeling the object, using CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) programs, producing the Toolpath, post processing, editing G Code, positioning the stock material, and setting the machine origin were tested for an understanding of what changes had to be made to the process to accurately mill and cut out 3D objects. Solutions were discovered through digital and physical setups that are …
The Architecture Of Batak Toba: An Expression Of Living Harmoniously, Himasari Hanan, Surjamanto Wonorahardjo
The Architecture Of Batak Toba: An Expression Of Living Harmoniously, Himasari Hanan, Surjamanto Wonorahardjo
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
Batak Toba people have a fi gurative imagination through which they orientate themselves to nature and the surrounding landscape. The architecture of the house is created to create a beautiful fi gure in the natural landscape as well as to act in moderating warm-humid climate. Dramatic roof forms have been developed as an expression of this culturally determined sensitivity towards natural forces and practical wisdom towards thermal comfort. Building a house deals with human needs within a structure of static and living components from the environment. Aesthetic qualities emerge genuinely out of the adaptive process within the corresponding multidimensional aspects …
