The Beginning Student Of Design: Architectural Frames Of Reference, Gregory S. Palermo Dec 2017

The Beginning Student Of Design: Architectural Frames Of Reference, Gregory S. Palermo

Gregory Palermo

There they are, every Tuesday and Thursday -- two hundred minds seeking perspective on the means by which to access architecture: to think about it, look at it and analyze it, engage in discussions about it, and experience it. Student interests and capabilities are varied because in addition to being required for pre-architecture students, this is a university general studies course -- a threshold into the adventure of architecture! This paper addresses the content and methods of introducing architectural frames of reference to the beginning student of design in the challenging large lecture learning environment. Canon and skepticism. Five frames …

Architecture Ethics Justice, Gregory S. Palermo Dec 2017

Architecture Ethics Justice, Gregory S. Palermo

Gregory Palermo

The title of this talk includes no conjunctions and bears no punctuation in order to heighten the conception of the simultaneity, the unitariness of three conceptions that we often perceive as disparate realms. As I put together these remarks, I have begun to think in terms of shaping a more complete paper with this same title – entering into a territory (perhaps presumptively!) not unlike Heidegger’s “Building Dwelling Thinking” of his earlier period -- which is not a dissimilar associative lead. Today though is not the time for a tightly argued philosophical statement regarding the premises of such a conflation.

Professional Virtue And Citizenship: An Ethical Framing Of The Aia, Gregory S. Palermo Dec 2017

Professional Virtue And Citizenship: An Ethical Framing Of The Aia, Gregory S. Palermo

Gregory Palermo

This paper proposes that the American Institute of Architects (AIA), a corporate collective of the architectural profession, if it wishes to be more than a professional trade organization speaking to the economic self-interest of its members (and being perceived as such), has available to it two ethical courses to pursue: 1) That of improving the knowledge, skills and judgment of architects – defining and working on the virtues of the architect; and 2) That of participating in public policy decision-making and speaking out with regard to environmental design, whether proposals be public or private. Both of these concepts are embedded …

Sb Lawyer, Courtroom Architecture And Human Beings.Pdf, Robert M. Sanger

Robert M. Sanger

All of us who visit courtrooms have encountered some frustration with the manner in which they are designed.  I had occasion to have a brief discussion about this with a Judge form the United Kingdom which, in turn, led to researching the literature on courtroom architecture.  In this Criminal Justice column, we will explore some of the current themes (or themes that should be current) regarding what courtrooms look like, why they look that way and how we can do better.
For the purpose of this article, we will look at the broad historic trends in development of the modern …

Case Study: A Sustainable Livelihoods Analysis Of A Non-Governmental Organization Working With Quinoa Producers In The Province Of Chimborazo, Ecuador, Sumac Elisa Cárdenas Oleas

Elisa Cardenas

Concerns with rural poverty in Latin America have resulted in the development and application of various poverty alleviation projects, programs, and policies. Many of these efforts focus on agricultural development since a large segment of the rural poor rely on small-scale agricultural production. Quinoa is one agricultural product that has attracted much attention in such efforts because of its high nutritional value and its high demand in many developed countries. Considerable research related to quinoa production and the resulting effects on producers have been conducted in the two leading exporting nations, Bolivia and Peru. However, there have been only a …

Biobased Products And The Leed® Rating System, Meredith Chambers, Mikesch Muecke

At the beginning of the 20th century, over 40% by weight of all the materials consumed through the production of goods within the United States were comprised of renewable resources (Matos and Wagner 1998). In contrast, by the end of the 20th century renewable material usage had dropped to less than 8% by weight (Matos and Wagner 1998). Combined with both an increase in the overall rate at which we consume resources as well as growing awareness of the inherently finite availability of nonrenewable resources, the early decades of the 21st century may mark the beginning of a shift back …

Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas: Contestations From Gambling To Water Rights, Mikesch Muecke Nov 2017

Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas: Contestations From Gambling To Water Rights, Mikesch Muecke

Mikesch Muecke

Let me dwell for a moment on the fabulous aspects of the city and its environs. The word ‘fabulous’ derives from the Latin fabula which gives us the English ‘fable’, a short narrative that provides an edifying or cautionary point. Fables can be pedagogical instruments. When Denise Scott-Brown, Robert Venturi, the late Steven Izenour et al took a first—second—look in 1968, they insisted in their formal analysis of the Las Vegas strip to postpone judgment, i.e. they proposed to view the space through a dispassionate lense, assembling analytic maps while resisting the temptation to judge the Strip based on an …

Urban Rail Transit Ppps: Lessons From East Asian Cities, S Y Phang Oct 2017

Urban Rail Transit Ppps: Lessons From East Asian Cities, S Y Phang

PHANG Sock Yong

Private sector participation in urban rail transit has proliferated in the past two decades. The large metropolises of East Asia have had decades of experience with private sector participation in the provision of heavy metro services. The design of these public-private partnerships (PPP) are varied. The diverse experiences of Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore and Beijing contain valuable lessons for other cities. Using a case study approach, this paper discusses three features of urban rail transit developments in the context of East Asian cities, viz., farebox recovery, land value capture mechanisms, and vertical structure of the industry. Super vertical integration …

Edible Toledo: Designing For Food Security, Sara Khorshidifard Oct 2017

Edible Toledo: Designing For Food Security, Sara Khorshidifard

Sara Khorshidifard

Imagine America where all ex-decrepit landscapes are food-generator containers. Architectural design can pose such new ways to see, interpret, and transform the built environments. Optimism can subsist amid and beyond the imperfections in urban-rural continuums. Food insecurity epidemics and leftover spaces is a twofold with latent capacities. The American Rust Belt cities are particularly trapped and plagued with many such abandoned, idled
and dormant sites. Trances of possibility are yet to be discovered to turn the former dilapidated zones into vigorous food-productive vessels. These images are bent on alleviating hunger and blight. With optimism, architecture, too, can espouse more meaningfulness, …

The design of this building transitions it from a traditional role of academic “home” for the disciplines of the built environment to a most welcome new teacher and tectonic faculty member. The Design Building was always envisioned as a living laboratory for learning, deeply intertwined with the curriculum and progressive mission of the Design Building’s disciplines.

Ethical Premises In Student Proposals: Well-Being, Virtue And Change, Gregory S. Palermo Sep 2017

Ethical Premises In Student Proposals: Well-Being, Virtue And Change, Gregory S. Palermo

Gregory Palermo

Architecture students believe in the future—a future that architecture can help shape for the better. The opening quote is one among dozens of student proposals from the past four years that directly express the coming together of social benefit, architectural theory and ideology, and design of the environment.

Situating Design, Gregory S. Palermo Sep 2017

Situating Design, Gregory S. Palermo

Gregory Palermo

This is a case study of the development of a new Core curriculum course at the Iowa State University (ISU) College of Design (CoD). It relates an overview of the creation of the course and sample learning exercises that activate a large lecture class. Historically, the CoD separated first-year students into discipline specific studies, narrowing, we believe, their perspectives about design. A Task Force analyzed learning outcomes of the first year programs, and proposed a more interdisciplinary conception of design education. The CoD committed itself to creating a Core foundation year of design studies, which students in Architecture, Landscape Architecture …

Ethical Expectations: Reflections From Beginning Architecture Students, Gregory S. Palermo

Gregory Palermo

Each year several thousand recent high school graduates enter accredited professional degree programs to study architecture. They have made the decision to ‘become an architect’ early in life and arrive at university directly from high school rather than upon completion of a prior baccalaureate degree. Undoubtedly, during the final years of high school, autumn 2008 entering first-year students answered this question more than a few times: “Why do you want to study architecture?”

Sustainable Environments, Kant And Architectural Education: Reflections On An Intersection, Gregory S. Palermo

These quotations from Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities and the Lester Brown definition of sustainable societal practices set the stage for this exploration of a Kantian categorical imperative for integrating sustainable design concepts into architectural education:

Exploring Ethical Grounding For Architecture: Four Lenses, Gregory S. Palermo Sep 2017

Exploring Ethical Grounding For Architecture: Four Lenses, Gregory S. Palermo

Gregory Palermo

Ethics asks: What is good? What is arete excellencelvirtue? What is right? What is just. Central questions of the discipline of architecture, architectural education and architecture's multiple modes of practicing are: What are architecture's intents, purposes and impacts? Do the acts of designing and building our habitat intrinsically embrace the questions that ethics asks? Commonsense may answer yes due to architecture's fundamental role in addressing human needs. Given that architecture is thought, process and object, and that its purposes range from shelter and construction to engaging "beauty" and theoretical and utopian speculation, what would the grounding for those ethics be?
