Architectural Lessons Of Carlo Lodoli (1690-1761): Indole Of Material And Of Self, Marc J. Neveu Oct 2005

Architectural Lessons Of Carlo Lodoli (1690-1761): Indole Of Material And Of Self, Marc J. Neveu

Architecture

Carlo Lodoli (1690-1761) exists as a footnote in most major history books of modern architecture. He is typically noted for either his influence on the Venetian Neoclassical tradition or as an early prophet to some sort of functionalism. Though I would not argue his influence, I doubt his role in the development of a structurally determined functionalism. The issue of influence is always present as very little of his writings have survived and his built work amounts to a few windowsills. He did, however, teach architecture. I propose to explore the pedagogic potential of Lodoli’s lessons of architecture.

Lodoli’s teaching …

Beyond Brasilia - Contemporary Urban Design In Brazil, Vicente Del Rio Oct 2005

Beyond Brasilia - Contemporary Urban Design In Brazil, Vicente Del Rio

City and Regional Planning

This paper is a brief discussion of a recent research on how Brazilian cities have been shaped from the late 1980s to the early 2000s through several case studies in different cities. After the disruption of the modernist paradigm, the demythification of Brasilia, and the redemocratization of the country in the 1980s, architecture and urbanism in Brazil were eager for new models with which to face urban development. On one side globalization and market forces dragged society towards an “entrepreneurial” and fragmented city of shopping centers, gated communities, private enclaves, and trendy and irrelevant architectural imagery. On the other side …

Review Of Samuel G. White And Elizabeth White's "Mckim, Mead & White: The Masterworks" And Kristen Schaffer's "Daniel H. Burnham: Visionary Architect And Planner", Bruno Giberti

Architecture

As any undergraduate knows, architectural history is a relentlessly visual subject. It is not impossible, but exceedingly difficult to make a convincing argument through words alone. Words must talk to pictures, in the absence of buildings, and pictures must join together to form a visual argument that is an analogue of the text. What then are we to do with the big picture books favored by publishers like Rizzoli? These serve a function and have an audience, which includes many historians, some of whom are their authors; but it is not the same function as an academic publication, which rarely …

Climate, Margot Mcdonald Jun 2005

Climate, Margot Mcdonald

Architecture

As with any building project, climate has an enormous impact on building and site energy and water consumption, the potential for on-site electrical power generation, indoor environmental quality in terms of thermal comfort and daylighting opportunities, and the creation of protected outdoor environments as extensions of interior spaces. In order to assess the site-climate design potential designers, users, and building owners need to consider issues revealed by quantitative, scientific data of existing conditions, qualitative regional or microclimatic principles that optimize building form, organization, and materials based on this understanding, and simulations of future design alternatives. This paper discusses the relevant …

Teaching Pedagogy 101, Ronald W. Welch, Allen C. Estes

Architectural Engineering

What are the basics to consider in becoming an effective teacher? So you are a new faculty member just assigned a course and a textbook. Your only teaching experience is as a TA filling in for your traveling professor while teaching directly from your personal course notes taken when you took the course. Sound familiar? Where do you go? Who do you call? How do you quickly prepare yourself to be an effective teacher? Or maybe you have a few years of teaching experience and want to improve your performance as a teacher. Where do you start in preparing the …

Load Rating Versus Reliability Analysis, Allen C. Estes, Dan M. Frangopol May 2005

Load Rating Versus Reliability Analysis, Allen C. Estes, Dan M. Frangopol

Architectural Engineering

The most common approach to assess the safety of a bridge is load rating. However, this approach cannot quantify the bridge safety in probabilistic terms or fully quantify the structural risk to the bridge. Reliability methods have become an increasingly popular and gradually accepted approach to assess the safety of structures. These methods account for the randomness and correlation of all relevant variables and failure modes in the analysis. This study performs both a load rating analysis and a reliability analysis on the same highway bridge, compares the results, and discusses the strengths and limitations of each approach.

Project-Based Independent Study Capstone Course, Ronald W. Welch, Allen C. Estes Apr 2005

Project-Based Independent Study Capstone Course, Ronald W. Welch, Allen C. Estes

Architectural Engineering

This paper describes a unique project-based course used successful by the ABET-Accredited Civil Engineering Program at the United States Military Academy (USMA) to greatly enhance the academic program. The three general project classifications available within this senior course are service-based (i.e., USMA, the Army, local community, etc.), competition-based (i.e., steel bridge, concrete canoe, timber bridge, Big Beam), and research-based. The exceptional student work provided at little to no cost to the client has opened up a ground swell of service and research projects now constantly offered to the program coordinator by prospective clients. We believe these independent study projects are …

Hosting An International Conference On Women And Shelter: Pedagogic And Logistical Insights, Hemalata C. Dandekar, Sujata Shetty Apr 2005

Hosting An International Conference On Women And Shelter: Pedagogic And Logistical Insights, Hemalata C. Dandekar, Sujata Shetty

City and Regional Planning

The experience of hosting an international conference at the University of Michigan on the topic of shelter, women, and development provided the authors of this paper with two kinds of insights. First, there was useful substantive information which broadened our delineation of the subject area addressed. Second, we developed a heightened awareness of university and institutional administration and the logistical issues that must be attended to if faculty/student initiatives are to succeed. This paper extracts some elements of this experience in the areas of substantive inquiry, logistical arrangements, and implications for pedagogy, which may be useful to other academics considering …

Village Homes, Davis, California: A Learning Lab For Future Planners, Paul Wack Apr 2005

Village Homes, Davis, California: A Learning Lab For Future Planners, Paul Wack

City and Regional Planning

Built in the 1970s, Village Homes is an extremely successful housing development in Davis, California, and considered a model of sustainable community design. Energy-conscious houses are organized around a system of pedestrian-friendly streets and open spaces, with community facilities, shared gardens, orchards, and vineyards, all managed by residents. Professor Paul Wack, a founder of the Sustainable Environments minor in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, has been adopting it as a case-study for his classes for several years.

Discounting Transit Passes, Cornelius K. Nuworsoo Apr 2005

Discounting Transit Passes, Cornelius K. Nuworsoo

City and Regional Planning

Public transit operators in the United States have long known that fare hikes do not increase total revenues. Although while fare reductions might boost ridership, they can also reduce total revenues and thus increase reliance on subsidies. Transit operators trying to balance their budgets need new strategies that can produce more revenue than costs. Some transit agencies have tried selling steeply discounted unlimited-ride transit passes to groups, such as students at a university or employees at a large company. Such deep-discount group-pass programs are paid for either by participants though payroll deductions or school fees, by an employer or school, …

The Tectonics Of Motion, Light And Space, Thomas Fowler, Iv Jan 2005

The Tectonics Of Motion, Light And Space, Thomas Fowler, Iv

Architecture

This paper illustrates the design work from an integrated third year Architecture Design Studio and Environmental Controls Systems (ECS) Studio. As the final project, all students developed a ‘Center for the Study of Light’, based on the quarter long experiments with light. The quarter began with spatial experiments with both day and electric lighting. In the ECS course students started with several physical model interpretations of James Turrell’s electric light installations and in the Design Studio several full-scaled working versions of Moholy Nagy’s Light Space Modular were constructed to explore the connection of movement, light, space and materials. Another instructor …

Deep Discount Group Pass Programs: Innovative Transit Finance, Cornelius Nuworsoo Jan 2005

Deep Discount Group Pass Programs: Innovative Transit Finance, Cornelius Nuworsoo

City and Regional Planning

For public transit operators in the U.S., neither fare increases nor fare reductions have been successful in boosting revenues. A different kind of strategy is needed, one that can produce more revenue for transit operators than it costs. This article argues that deep discount group pass (DDGP) programs can accomplish this goal. DDGP programs provide groups of people with unlimited-ride transit passes in exchange for a contractual payment by a group’s employer or other organizing body. While previous research on DDGP programs has ignored their impact on operator revenues, this article addresses that gap by focusing on their revenue-increasing potential. …
