This plan proposes the replacement of the current Amtrak Staples Mill Station with a new facility designed to incorporate civic art, multi-use development, and fast and easy train boarding. Drawing on successful examples like Union Station in D.C. and Main Street Station in Richmond, this plan encourages stakeholders to adopt a strategic vision for the station and its vicinity as an asset to the region. An independent commission with equal representation from state agency representatives and residents would enact these improvements through a public-private partnership, including a transit-oriented development scheme for adjacent land.

There is a need in the humanities for a 3D WebGIS with analytical tools that allow researchers to analyze 3D models linked to spatially referenced data. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allow for complex spatial analysis of 2.5D data. For example, they offer bird’s eye views of landscapes with extruded building footprints, but one cannot ‘get on the ground’ and interact with true 3D models from a pedestrian perspective. Meanwhile, 3D models and virtual environments visualize data in 3D space, but analytical tools are simple rotation or lighting effects. Since the onset of settlement pattern studies in the 1950s, landscape mapping projects have become an archaeological mainstay. Remote sensing technologies such as lidar, photogrammetry, and SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) steadily reveal new archaeological sites. For landscape archaeology, the detection and mapping of small architectural complexes and households offers important data to contextualize larger (often already known) sites and perform regional analyses. Built in 1883, the house at 453 F Street was originally located at the northwest corner of the block (number 86) which is the southeast corner of 5th and G Streets (Daily Times Telephone, 13 Jan. 1883). It appears to have been moved to its present location in 1941 when the Standard Oil Company con- structed a gasoline station at 5th and G Streets for E.W. Chamber- lain and his son, Byard (Arcata Union, 21 Nov. 1941). This report details the architectural evolution and ownership history of the house.

The house at 1086 I Street was built for Isaac Minor by local contractor Theodore Dean in 1884 (Humboldt Standard, 2 Oct. 1884). During that same year, Dean oversaw the construction of two other houses and a store on the Minor Block. The Hunt Dental Building at 839 Ninth Street in Arcata is a one-story stucco structure with a quasi pavilion in the center of the front facade. A recessed entry contains a glass-paned door with sidelights and a transom light overhead. Front windows on either side of the entry consist of a narrow window with a small upper-division and a larger window which repeats the divisions. At least a partial answer, maybe even a portent of 1984, may lie in a municipality concept described recently by Chester E. Smolski, associate professor of geography at Rhode Island College.
