Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Greening An Older Modest-Sized Home, Delilah Zoe Leval
Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Greening An Older Modest-Sized Home, Delilah Zoe Leval
Master's Theses
This professional project estimates the upfront costs and utility savings expected from greening an approximately 1,100 square foot home built in the 1950s in the San Francisco Bay Area. Two sets of upgrades (alternative and original) were compared for costs and benefits. The alternative set (which included ceiling insulation and omitted upgrading to dual-pane windows) clearly out performed the original set. The alternative set would be expected to reduce resident utility bills by 28% annually, and to prevent approximately 2,700 lbs of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The water efficiency upgrades were the best performing group of upgrades, as they had …
Perceptions And Evaluation Of An Urban Environment For Pedestrian Friendliness: A Case Study, Elizabeth H. Lee
Perceptions And Evaluation Of An Urban Environment For Pedestrian Friendliness: A Case Study, Elizabeth H. Lee
Master's Theses
Public health is an increasingly important issue addressed from both environmental and public health sectors for the future development of urban environments. From a planning perspective, one possible solution is to increase walkability throughout the cities. Many assessment methods are being developed and administered to evaluate the quality of existing urban environments to promote walkable cities/communities. The results from using these methods provide policymakers and stakeholders with valuable information regarding the existing physical conditions of the environment. Although several US cities started to develop and refocus plans toward pedestrian-oriented policies approaches, results from this particular study determined that the quality …

An Assessement Of The Link Between Greenhouse Gass Emissions Inventories And Climate Action Plans, Michael R. Boswell, Adrienne Greve, Tammy L. Seale
City and Regional Planning
In this article, we review local climate action plans and their associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventories from 30 U.S cities in order to assess the degree to which climate action plans are informed by such inventories and to identify choices and assumptions the inventories require that may influence climate action plan policies and proposed actions. We hope this will help planners preparing climate action plans make informed, clear, and defensible choices, as well as optimize policy development and implementation in their communities. In addition, we hope that this research will contribute to refining future GHG emissions inventory protocols and …

A Comparative Study Of Three Growing Media And Four Plant Groups Under Extensive Green Roof Conditions In San Luis Obispo, Ca, Todd Alan Nelson
Master's Theses
ABSTRACT A Comparative Study of Three Growing Media and Four Plant Groups Under Extensive Green Roof Conditions in San Luis Obispo, California Todd A. Nelson Green roof growing media and plant species are critical factors when deciding on the best materials for a project. Growing media must be chosen in accordance with load bearing capacities of structures and water requirements of the plant material. Plant species must be able to thrive in the climate of the green roof and withstand a green roof’s harsh environment. The objectives of this research were: (1) to determine which of three extensive green roof …

Greywater As A Method Of Water Conservation In Arroyo Grande, Danielle Castle
Greywater As A Method Of Water Conservation In Arroyo Grande, Danielle Castle
Master's Theses
The purpose of this professional project is to address the practical implications of decentralized greywater usage in the City of Arroyo Grande. This professional project consists of two products: a brief greywater guide for the City and a background report. The greywater guide is intended for city planners to use for general information about greywater systems. The guide addresses Arroyo Grande’s potable water shortage; what greywater is; advantages and concerns about greywater use; plants that are tolerant and intolerant of greywater irrigation; appropriate detergents to use with a greywater system; and a summary of California greywater law. The background report …
The Relationship Between Quality Of Life And Leed-Nd Certified / Certifiable Neighborhoods, Stephanie Nicole Timm
The Relationship Between Quality Of Life And Leed-Nd Certified / Certifiable Neighborhoods, Stephanie Nicole Timm
Master's Theses
The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) has developed a rating system that examines the sustainability of neighborhoods. They have specifically stated that that LEED-ND certified neighborhoods will protect and enhance residents’ overall health, the natural environment, and quality of life. This study uses relevant quality of life indicators that are commonly identified by social scientists as accurate interpreters of the various quality of life domains to determine if there is, in fact, a relationship between LEED-ND and quality of life. Four of the ten domains examined were found to be related to LEED-ND certified/certifiable neighborhoods, thus, to a certain …
Alternative Methods And Forums To Optimize Public Participation In The Planning Process, Joseph James David
Alternative Methods And Forums To Optimize Public Participation In The Planning Process, Joseph James David
Master's Theses
“Public participation” takes on various forms in the realm of local government planning. Many planners stand behind the ideal of involving community, but participation in practice often fails to achieve this objective. The primary vehicle for local government participation is the public hearing, which is a formalized process that often elicits one-way communication from planner to public. The nature of a hearing is to inform the public about development applications or policy changes, expose governing body decisions to the public, and elicit reactions from interested members of the public. Significant effort is taken daily by local planning departments to promote …
